Interesting point Mirek. Do you know why, if a recce car makes so much difference, the team would go to the expense they do in every other area, only to skimp on a £30,000 ford focus for their number two driver? Just seems a little strange.

It does matter, but I don't think there is much difference between the Focus RS and the Volvo as a recce car. It would be different if you would use like a Ford Transit or a Raptor or something.

The Volvos are 4WD and converted into almost group N specs, not so bad for a recce car.

On the other hand, when you sit high, the view you have on cuts and hidden obstacles is a lot better.
The idea is to spot them in recce and put them in the notes, because you might not see them when sitting low while rallying.

If you go slow enough and watch out of the side window, you can see them from any car. Sometimes I even get out of the car to take a look

One funny story to this topic. Years a go Czech gentleman driver Milan Liška was doing the recce of Rally Deutschland with a motorhome because his recce car broke down. The problems started in wineyards because the motorhome needed to reverse several times in each hairpin. As a result many crews were forced to slowly follow the motorhome.
