That logic most certainly applies to final day or two if differences are so large that it's next to impossible to gain places by trying like a mad man. In those situations teams instruct their drivers just to reach finish.
This is nothing new, however. Richard Burns immortalized such tactics in 2001 when he became champion with just one win against three drivers with three wins. Consistency is the key, never throw away points that you're sure to gain over points that you're very unlikely to get by risking it all.
