I used to manage stores for one of their rivals, and the short answer is "a-holes".

Obviously 99% of customers in any given day were perfectly fine, but even now it's the 1% of morons who stick in the memory.

I agree that maybe they have not slowed them down as much as some expected, but think part of it is a byproduct of the regs and the aero improvements. They can now trim the cars to the fastest...
