Max Verstappen produced a complete qualifying performance to claim the Austrian Grand Prix pole position. Hamilton ultimately finished the session in P7 but told race engineer Pete Bonnington “I’m just slow mate” after an underwhelming final run.
When the first laps of Q3 were laid down, the order was roughly as expected with Verstappen leading Norris, but the gaps between the pair were far from regular as the reigning champion punched in a time that was over three-and-a-half tenths clear of the McLaren man.
Verstappen stretched that lead on his final run as Norris and Russell followed suit. Oscar Piastri lost a lap for track limits, dropping him to P7, while Charles Leclerc went off track in the final sector as he wrestled with his SF-24 machine.

Q3: The gravel at Turn 6 was being cleared up and delayed the start of Q3. When Q3 began, there was a slight lull before drivers emerged from their garages. Perez and Ocon were on the backfoot without new tyres for Q3. Hamilton pulled out of the Mercedes garage, taking one of the jacks with him. Luckily, it came loose from his car and no one was injured. The unsafe release was noted by race control.
Verstappen began his lap, getting a nice tow from Hulkenberg at the start. However, Norris set the fastest first sector. Verstappen was quickest in Sector 2. Piastri finished his first flying lap for P1, quickly topped by Verstappen with a 1:04.426. Norris crossed the line for P2, 0.361 seconds behind the leader. Leclerc finished his lap for P3 and Hamilton for P5. Russell then finished his lap with a P3 time.
After the opening laps, Verstappen was in P1, Norris in P2, Russell P3, Leclerc P4, Piastri P5, Hamilton P6, Sainz P7, Perez P8, Ocon P9, and Hulkenberg P10. The cars re-entered the pits readying for their final run of Qualifying.
On the final flying laps, Verstappen, Piastri, and Sainz all set a green Sector 1. Verstappen’s second sector was yellow, but the third was purple. He set a 1:04.314. Piastri followed 0.472 slower than Verstappen for P2. Sainz finished in P4. Norris pipped his teammate to second. Meanwhile, Leclerc had a snap of oversteer, ruining his chances. He went wide and off the track into the gravel and grass in a dramatic fashion, damaging his car.

Max Verstappen produced a timely reminder of his incredible pace in the Red Bull after qualifying on pole for Sunday’s Formula 1 2024 Austrian Grand Prix to seal his second pole of the weekend. Just hours after the Dutchman fought off both McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to win the F1 Sprint, Verstappen‘s blistering pace proved to be good enough for the Austrian GP pole to match as he dominated qualifying at the Red Bull Ring – going over three tenths of a second quicker than his closest rival.
Verstappen’s Q2 time of a 1:04.469 was comfortably the quickest lap of the weekend and he went marginally quicker in Q3 on his first run to set a time of 1:04.314. Norris will start alongside him on the front row in second, with George Russell third and Carlos Sainz fourth. Lewis Hamilton is on the third row in P5, Charles Leclerc sixth and Piastri, who finished second in the sprint race, is down in seventh after having his time deleted due to a track limits violation. Sergio Perez, Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Ocon made up the rest of the top 10.

Verstappen smashes opposition to secure pole position for Austrian Grand Prix

Having dominated the F1 Spielberg Sprint earlier today, reigning champion Max Verstappen smashed his rivals in qualifying to take a dominant pole position for tomorrow’s Austrian Grand Prix. F1Technical’s pitlane reporter Balazs Szabo reports on the nail-biting main qualifying from the Spielberg. Max Verstappen fractionally beat the McLaren of Lando Norris yesterday, but he managed to find another gear for today’s main qualifying session.
The Dutchman set an eye-watering time of 1m04.314s to secure pole position for his team’s home race. McLaren driver Lando Norris was his closest challenger once again, but the Briton was could not get within three tenths of a second to Verstappen, but it was still enough for him to take P2 on the grid. His team-mate Oscar Piastri looked strong, but he had his best lap time deleted for track limits infringement which means that he will only start from P7 tomorrow.
