AFAIK it's a technical limitation. The cars have wireless transmitters with receivers in an aeroplane flying over the stage. The plane has only a certain range where it can receive a signal, and it usually doesn't cover the whole stage. Thus they can only receive signals from a certain area in the stage. But I don't know how and what they did in 2011.
