The problem I have is the photo is way small and I can't make out the detail (getting old and blind
).

The jungle still looks asian to me (judging by the yellow-green colour), maybe India or Sri Lanka?
It looks similar to the backdrop for an old Simon LeBon music video, can't remeber what song, or where it was filmed though (so that's no real help)

the book? you got that in one too - The Fountains of Paradise by Clarke where this is the so-called demon rock.
The actual place is Lion's Rock or Sigiriya or Simhgiri in the middle of SL
I knew anfield would get this due to the sci-fi connection and being a geo wiz anyway

didn't really get the answer, had a vague idea and narrowed the location down to an area od about 1/7 total land mass of the Earth
. The only reason I guessed at Clarke was because he spent most of his writing life living in Sri Lanka
