In September 28, 1990, Martin Donnelly suffered a huge crash at Jerez, Spain that left his legs flopping but survived. The following year, he got married.

After suffering grave injuries in the 1990 Spanish GP practice, he retired and became involved with the sport in junior single-seater formulae, running many successful teams. Still runs a junior racing team which is based in Norfolk, where Martin now lives and prepares his own cars. Still races occasionally, mostly in UK endurance events and is also now a driver development manager for Comtec's F.Renault and WS Renault team.
