Bahrain GP Preview: Are Ferrari primed to surprise Verstappen?
Everything you need to know about the F1 season-opening 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix

New season of Formula 1, new hope, new storylines but there’s a feeling we will end up with the same champions – Max Verstappen and Red Bull. The season has not even started and the paddock feeling is we are in for a long year, which is actually true because there are a record-breaking 24 races to come.

“Time will tell if the others are fast or not or if we are fast enough,” said Verstappen, who won the 2023 Bahrain GP. “Bahrain is one particular track and there are lots of different tracks on the calendar where we have to perform. In general, it’s better not to think about it. Wake up, get to the track, see the result – if it’s good or bad, it’s not going to change anything. That’s how I approach it.”

Ferrari cannot be ruled out: Ferrari have made big strides over the winter and tyre degradation is seemingly no longer a major issue for them. They have always been strong in slow-speed corners and are right up there with Red Bull in terms of straight line speed.

Formula 1 2024: Everything you need to know ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix

The wait is over. After three months off and three days of testing, the 2024 Formula 1 season is set to start in Bahrain for the fourth consecutive year. All 20 drivers from last year’s grid remain with their same teams this season, a first in Formula 1 history.

Three-time defending champion Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing enjoyed one of the most dominant seasons in the Formula 1 history in 2023. Testing results last week showed Red Bull is likely still the class of the field with others still closing the gap. Ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix, here’s what to know about the 2024 Formula 1 season…

Drains which halted testing twice removed ahead of Bahrain Grand Prix
    28th February 2024, 11:36
    Written by Keith Collantine
    RaceFans

Formula 1 has taken steps to avoid a repeat of the problem which brought testing to a halt twice in Bahrain last week. A drain on the drivers’ right-hand side as they approach turn 11 at the Bahrain International Circuit has been filled in and painted over after its covering came apart during the test last week.

Running stopped for over an hour on Thursday and Friday last week after the covers were damaged by passing cars and lifted onto the track. One cover punched a small hole in the floor of Charles Leclerc’s new Ferrari, leading the team to fit a replacement. The Ferrari driver said he was “lucky” his collision was not as serious as that of team mate Carlos Sainz Jnr when he hit a broken water valve cover during practice for the penultimate round of last season in Las Vegas.

Max Verstappen suspects the performance of modern Formula 1 cars, in particularly the downforce generated by their floors, may be causing more problems with coverings in track surfaces. “With the ground effect cars, probably it’s a little bit worse,” he said. “But also it seems like we’re driving in places that not a lot of other cars are going, in terms of opening up corners.”

Daniel Ricciardo tops opening practice of F1 2024, Max Verstappen unhappy with car.
Daniel Ricciardo kicks off F1 2024 by topping opening practice at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

RB’s Daniel Ricciardo was the surprise pacesetter as the 2024 F1 season kicked into action with first practice at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Ricciardo ended up just 0.032s clear of the McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, with all three using Pirelli’s softest tyre to complete their fastest laps. Ricciardo’s teammate Yuki Tsunoda, also on soft tyres, was fourth-quickest.

Verstappen was unhappy with his new Red Bull RB20, complaining several times throughout the session about a variety of issues, including “very bad” downshifts and upshifts and a “really weird” throttle application. After setting the pace in the early stages, the Dutchman bemoaned that “everything was miles off” in his new challenger.

Daniel Ricciardo makes PERFECT start to new Formula One season at Bahrain Grand Prix... leading to furious Max Verstappen foul-mouthed rant
    • Daniel Ricciardo finished top after first practice in Bahrain
    • The Australian surprisingly showed pace on Friday
    • Max Verstappen was frustrated after the first running

Daniel Ricciardo was the surprise name at the top of the time sheet in Formula One's first practice session of the new season in Bahrain. The Australian - driving for the newly rebranded RB team - saw off Lando Norris by just 0.032 seconds, with Oscar Piastri third in the other McLaren. Ricciardo was dropped by McLaren at the end of 2022, but was handed a lifeline by Red Bull's junior team midway through last season.

Verstappen heads into the curtain raiser here in the Gulf kingdom as the favourite to claim a fourth consecutive world championship. But the Dutch driver appeared unsettled in the opening running at a gusty Sakhir circuit. 'Everything is s***,' he yelled over the radio. 'Like miles off.'

Explaining Bahrain GP's Ricciardo-led first practice session
    Feb 29, 2024
    by Ben Anderson
    The Race

Daniel Ricciardo set the quickest time in first practice for the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix, with Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen only sixth fastest, as a mix of run plans and tyre usage skewed our first picture of race weekend performance.

The most accurate like-for-like comparison of all 10 teams came in the early part of the session, as all cars ran the medium compound (C2) Pirelli and attempted some kind of performance run. Naturally there are caveats over engine modes and fuel levels…

Bahrain GP: Ricciardo leads opening practice for RB!

    F1i.com

Daniel Ricciardo has gone out of his way to play down RB’s form, but the Aussie nevertheless topped the opening practice session of 2024 in Bahrain at the wheel of the rebranded outfit's VCARB 01. The Aussie led the field by a margin of 0.032s from McLaren’s Lando Norris, with Oscar Piastri completing the top three.

In the McLaren camp, as the session hit the halfway mark, a run on the soft rubber was in order for both Piastri and Norris. The Aussie predictably went top with a 1m33.113s but was quickly outdone by his teammate who went 0.212s faster.

RB’s Yuki Tsunoda also opted to sample a set of softs, the Japanese driver’s efforts taking him up to third, 0.282s behind Norris. Ricciardo followed suit and confirmed RB’s early form, popping to the top with a 1m32.869s. The checkered flag thus fell with a job well done for RB and McLaren with Ricciardo leading the field from Norris, Piastri and Tsunoda.

Lewis Hamilton leads Mercedes 1-2 in FP2 at F1 Bahrain Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s pace - a best time of 1m30.374s - in FP2 will deliver some optimism at Mercedes who, at the opening round of the 2024 F1 season, hope their new W15 car will represent a turnaround after two terrible years.

Just six minutes in, Hamilton set a benchmark of 1:30.751s. He led Verstappen by half-a-second for the majority of FP2. The three-time F1 champion and Red Bull driver was left complaining "I have too much air coming through my helmet" in a frustrating session.

Verstappen may have taken some comfort from a race simulation which was fastest, ahead of Hamilton. After qualifying simulation times, with 20 minutes left on the clock, Hamilton led Russell, Alonso, Sainz, Piastri and Verstappen.

Bahrain Grand Prix: F1 free practice 2 results

More qualifying simulations to come: While many of the top teams opted to complete their qualifying simulations at the beginning of the session, there were a group of drivers that went out on the medium tyres originally. Included in this group was the two Williams and two Sauber drivers, who now have taken their first soft tyres of the session. On their first quick lap attempts, both Williams jumped up into the top 10. Alex Albon set a 1:31.715, which was good enough for P8. His teammate slotted in right behind him, only 0.012 adrift.

At the halfway mark: After the first 30 minutes of the session, Hamilton was still leading the way with a 1:30.374. Carlos Sainz, Oscar Piastri, Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Alonso, Perez, Leclerc, Stroll, and Albon rounded out the top 10. Surprisingly, at the bottom of the timesheet sat the McLaren of Lando Norris. The British driver had only set a 1:32.608, and appears to be having some kind of issue, asking his team to replace his steering wheel part way through the session. Another driver seemingly out of place is George Russell, who was down in P14 at the half way mark. However, after completing his second qualifying simulation, the Mercedes driver jumps up to P2 behind his teammate.

What happened to Norris? Speaking to McLaren’s CEO Zak Brown, the team boss informed Sky Sport F1’s commentary team that Norris had to abort his qualifying simulation attempt early on due to making a mistake. On the papaya team’s competition, Brown said: “I don’t think Red Bull and Ferrari have turned their engines up yet. Let’s see how it goes, we’ve got lots of data. We ultimately don’t know, we’ll look at the data when we’re done but Mercedes certainly look strong, looks like they have a good car.”

Verstappen was +0.477 off Hamilton’s top time of 1:30.374 - only slightly ahead of Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg. Damon Hill reacted on Sky Sports: “The Red Bull is not one tenth quicker than the Haas! Exciting, fantastic. I do think there is something in this.”

“I think you have to take a lot of fuel out for Max to be a lot quicker than the Mercedes. Everyone wants to show what they are capable of doing. They are all sandbagging a bit! I thought the Mercedes looked nice. It’s not jittering around. I think they’ve done some work on their set-up.”

Max Verstappen “not too worried” by gap to Mercedes after ominous engine mode hint
Red Bull weren't on top in practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix, but Max Verstappen isn't too worried.
    29 Feb 2024
    Connor McDonagh
    Crash.Net

Assessing Red Bull’s turn of pace in Bahrain, Verstappen hinted that their lack of performance relative to Mercedes was down to difference in engine modes. “I think it was not too bad,” he said. “It’s just that it’s very close. Maybe some people around us already turned up the engine a bit in terms of top speed.

“We just focus on ourselves and I think from today there were a few little balance issues from front to rear but nothing big. It’s just about trying to find that sweet spot. Especially around here with the right tarmac. Once you get into that sweet spot you just pick up time. That’s what we will try to focus on tomorrow.”

When pressed on the engine mode point, he explained: “I wouldn’t say everyone around us did that but a few did. I am not too worried about the gap to P1 for example but it’s going to be very close in qualifying so that’s going to be very nice. The long run - I was a bit happier about that but again there’s a few little things that we can do better.”

Lewis Hamilton issues concerning Mercedes update on eve of Bahrain GP season-opener
Lewis Hamilton topped FP2 at the Bahrain Grand Prix, although Red Bull and Max Verstappen will still have their sights set on victory come race day.

Mercedes’ true potential was on show during FP2 as Hamilton led team-mate George Russell on the timing screens, while Verstappen’s fastest time was only good enough to place him sixth in the order. However, while some in the paddock were getting carried away, Hamilton kept his feet steadily on the ground.

“FP1, we were surprised,” he told Sky Sports F1. “It was very very windy this morning, so it was a really difficult session I think for everyone. The track was so different compared to last week. It was feeling okay, but we didn’t really know where we stood on the C2 tyre and then in this session [FP2], yeah, the car, we made some improvements over the session.”

“It’s a shock to see us where we are, we’ll take it for now, but we can’t get ahead of ourselves. We need to keep our heads down, keep working on the setup to try and extract more. I think our long-run pace is nowhere near the Red Bulls for example and I think we were a lot closer, so we’ve got some work to do there.”

25-year-old driver complains car is ‘super snappy’ during Bahrain Grand Prix practice
    Thu 29 February 2024 19:00
    Ben Evans
    F1 Oversteer

Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll wasn’t particularly happy with his car during the first practice session in Bahrain on Thursday afternoon. All 20 cars took to the track for the first time this weekend and had to deal with some very tricky conditions. Lance Stroll’s comments were picked up by Sky Sports F1 and former world champion Damon Hill explained what might have been going wrong for the Canadian.

Talking on the radio to his team, Stroll said: “The car is super snappy in turns one and two, oh my god, horrendous.” On commentary, Hill explained: “I don’t think he’s alone. It seems to me that this wind is upsetting everybody’s cars and I think they’re getting caught out with the change of aero as they go around the corner.”

“I’m sure the engineers will be saying that. The grandstands protect you and then suddenly you get exposed against the crosswind, it’s not consistent. It’s a sign that their aero is not robust, the way they manage the airflow across is not robust enough to protect the downforce and the vacuum under the car.”

Daniel Ricciardo starts 2024 F1 season on top at Bahrain GP practice, as drivers raise concerns over marathon season

    ABC Online

In short: Daniel Ricciardo was fastest in the first practice at the season-opening Bahrain GP, but dropped back to 12th in the second session. Both Mercedes topped FP2, with many drivers raising concerns about a marathon season containing a record 24 races.

"It was a good day and good testing for us," Ricciardo said as he started his first full season since getting sacked by McLaren in 2022 and replaced by Piastri. "We had our five minutes of fame in the morning, but as much as it was nice to see your name at the top, we knew … we'd get a true picture of where we're at this evening.”

"During the day, it's sunny, so there's a lot to take into account for our strong FP1 result, but track conditions change so much at night. I think there's a little more we can do, so … I'm staying optimistic because we know some areas to find more time. Let's see if we can crack into the top 10."

2024 FIA Formula One World Championship Bahrain Grand Prix Thursday Press Conference Transcript
    29.02.24
    FIA (Press Release)

TEAM REPRESENTATIVES: Toto WOLFF (Mercedes), Zak BROWN (McLaren), Frédéric VASSEUR (Ferrari), Laurent MEKIES (RB)

Laurent MEKIES: Honestly, I don’t think we should take too much notice of page one after FP1, obviously we ran a very different program compared to most of the guys, so there is no illusion in the team about what you see on the screen. No, instead, I think it's a continuation of the work we have done at the test, and it's still a bit early to talk about relative competitiveness, but you know what, it's only 24 hours before we’ll all know, so...

Frédéric VASSEUR: From the first one to the first one? No, I think if you compare with last year, I think that… I don't know about competitiveness and we'll see it probably tomorrow because today for 10 kilos of fuel you were moving from P1 to P6 or 7, and let's wait for tomorrow to see exactly where we are, all of us. But at least we are in a much better place in terms of balance, feeling of the drivers and so on. This is a much better starting point to develop the car for the season, to know where we have to work and to develop the car, and this is a good feeling.

Zak BROWN: Well, they're in engineering right now, so I only heard a little bit over the radio and some first impressions. It was very windy, but it was a good first session. I think everyone's… You know, the track is rubbering in, very windy conditions, it will continue to improve. We were running through, as every team will, the different run plans and it was a good opening session but I think very early to kind of draw any real conclusions.

Toto WOLFF: Yeah, I would wish we're masking our performance, but why would we? I think it's important to understand where you are in the competitive order, where you're lacking performance and where the car is good and that's why we've approached it as every other pre-season test. So we will see where, as Zak said, the chips fall down.

Bahrain Grand Prix: Carlos Sainz leads a Spanish 1-2 in FP3 ahead of Max Verstappen.
Carlos Sainz stole the show, and the top spot on the timesheet, from Fernando Alonso with a late lap in Friday’s final practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Although it was clear from their very first lap on the soft Pirellis that Red Bull had ditched Thursday’s sandbags, Verstappen and Sergio Perez immediately going 1-2, it was a Spanish 1-2 as Sainz clocked a 1:30.824 to beat Alonso by a tenth of a second. Max Verstappen was third ahead of Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris and George Russell.

The outgoing Ferrari driver outpaced Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso by 0.141 seconds during their respective soft tyre runs, with reigning world champion Max Verstappen third, 0.238s down in his Red Bull.

Bahrain Grand Prix – Carlos Sainz topped the times ahead of Fernando Alonso in the final practice before qualifying later today.

The Ferrari driver’s time wasn’t beaten in the final few minutes so it remained as a Spanish 1-2 ahead of Verstappen in P3. Leclerc was 0.270 seconds off his teammate in P4 while Russell was in a McLaren sandwich in P6 with Lando Norris ahead and Oscar Piasti behind.

Perez ended practice in P8 while Nico Hulkenberg put in a good lap to see his Haas into P9, the last within half a second of Sainz’ effort while Lance Stroll rounded out the top ten.

Carlos Sainz completed the final Bahrain Grand Prix practice session of the weekend with the fastest time, shading Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen in Formula 1's FP3 timesheets.

A flurry of final hot-laps interspersed among the final 10 minutes created a changing order after the Red Bulls moved to the top for a short spell, Verstappen capturing a 1m31.062s over team-mate Sergio Perez.

Alonso, who had been on top previously, reclaimed his advantage at the head of the field having become the first driver of the session to get below the 1m31s mark. However, his countryman Sainz managed to pull 0.141s out of Alonso's time, finishing the session atop the order for an all-Spanish 1-2.

Verstappen pulls lap out of the bag for stunning Bahrain GP pole.
Max Verstappen secured the first pole position of the new F1 season in qualifying at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Dutchman set a benchmark time of a 1:29.179 to finish 0.228 secs faster than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, with Mercedes driver George Russell third.

The first qualifying session of the season was given plenty of intrigue after three vastly different practice results across Thursday and the start of Friday, despite the belief that Red Bull would have everything its way. When it came to crunch time, Verstappen ended up a quarter of a second faster than anyone else, setting a blistering time with the help of a start-of-lap tow from Oscar Piastri's McLaren.

Carlos Sainz was fourth in the second Ferrari ahead of Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. McLaren duo Lando Norris and Piastri were seventh and eighth, whilst Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton could manage only ninth. Nico Hulkenberg far outperformed Haas' expectations to reach Q3 at the first time of asking.

Verstappen seals Bahrain pole ahead of Leclerc
    1st March 2024
    by Emer Hedderman
    FormulaSpy

Bahrain Grand Prix – Max Verstappen took pole for the opening race of the season with a comfortable gap to the rest of the field.
Q1: As the first qualifying of the season kicked off under the lights in Bahrain, the Ferraris and Alpines took to the track as soon as the session started. Carlos Sainz opened the timesheets with a 1:31.208, Charles Leclerc slotting in half a tenth behind, all four cars on track were on medium tyres.

Q2: Nobody seemed overly eager to head out at the start of Q2, and the circuit remained deserted for the first couple of minutes before the Haas cars started the slow-moving train exiting the pits. All cars were on soft tyres again.

Q3: Verstappen improved to a 1:29.179 on his last effort, and ended just over a quarter of a second up on Leclerc in P2, Russell took P3 ahead of Sainz while Perez slotted into P5 ahead of Alonso. The McLaren’s took P7 and P8, Norris as the last driver within half a second of Verstappen. Hamilton will start P9 with Hulkenberg alongside him on row 5.

Who took the first pole position of 2024?
    March 1, 2024
    James Phillips
    FormulaNerds

As the floodlights lit up a cold and windy Bahrain International Circuit, intrigue surrounded the first qualifying session of 2024. Fears of Red Bull conquering all before them seemed to be premature. Gear-upshift issues affected both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez in final practice. The reigning champions were seemingly not having things their own way, but rumours of Red Bull yet to unleash full power persisted ahead of qualifying. The same was said of its rivals.

Q3: Ferrari’s sudden surge of pace set up a showdown between the Scuderia and Red Bull for the final part of qualifying. Both McLarens and Sergio Perez ventured out first, all on used soft tyres for their first attempt at pole position. Leclerc also opted for a used set, deciding to save a set of tyres for his final run. Russell set the first time, Max Verstappen replacing him almost immediately. Sainz took P4 from Norris, with Charles Leclerc moving into P2 on his used soft tyres.

Fernando Alonso opted for one flying lap towards the end of the session, His efforts were rewarded with P3, as the rest of the top ten ventured onto the track, all on new soft tyres. The McLarens improved on their second runs, moving into P6 and P7. Max Verstappen took advantage of a tow behind Piastri, picking up a tow to move three tenths clear of the field. Russell moved into P3, while Hamilton could only move into P8. Sergio Perez’s effort was only good enough for P5, Alonso P6, Norris P7, Piastri P8, Hamilton P9, and Nico Hulkenberg P10.

Max Verstappen has taken pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix, out-pacing the competition to take the top spot on the timesheets. The Dutchman set the fastest lap ahead of Charles Leclerc and will lead the field for the start of Saturday's race.

Taking the spots on the second row of the grid was George Russell and Carlos Sainz, while the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez was fifth. It was a nightmare session for Alpine as Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly were the two slowest cars in the field.

Verstappen fastest in first 2024 F1 qualifying at Bahrain GP
    Mar 1, 2024
    by Valentin Khorounzhiy
    The Race

Reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen took pole position for the 2024 season opener in Bahrain, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc as his nearest rival.

    Key moments:
    • Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes in top three
    • Hamilton only ninth after topping Friday
    • Hulkenberg gets Haas into Q3
    • Alpine locks out back row

Verstappen was already on provisional pole after his first run in Q3 despite not even improving on his Q2 time - meaning there would likely be laptime to find on his final push in qualifying. That was indeed the case as he lowered the benchmark to 1m29.179s - although this was still marginally slower than Leclerc's Q2-topping lap.

Analysis: Verstappen’s still ahead but the chasing pack is closer than before.
With Max Verstappen winning 19 of the 22 grands prix held last season, neutral fans could easily be forgiven for hoping to see the world champion off the top spot on the grid for the first race of 2024.

But wasn’t how things played out in Bahrain. To the surprise of the Red Bull driver – but probably no-one else – he will start his title defence from pole for the second year in a row.

Verstappen is clearly confident the RB20, like its predecessor, is a better race car than a qualifying car. The data appears to back that up. In Thursday night’s long runs on a set of soft tyres, Verstappen’s average pace of 1’36.715 was quicker than any of the nine drivers who will start behind him on the grid.

Overtaking Verstappen may be even more of a challenge this year, though the data exaggerates this somewhat. Although Verstappen recorded by far the highest top speed through qualifying, hitting 327kph, this was thanks to a generous tow along the pit straight from Kevin Magnussen. Even so, the Red Bulls were both at the top of the speed trap rankings running solo.

Horner after pole in Bahrain: 'It was a great lap from Max'
    Published on 01 March 2024
    by Julien Lemmen
    Verstappen.nl

Team principal Christian Horner reflects after qualifying: "It was a great lap from Max, the circuit was getting cooler, so it was getting a little trickier. He didn’t think it was enough to take pole but thankfully it was and he put it together very well. It was very tight behind him, I have been saying the regulations are going to concertina the field and the start of this year is starting to show that, which make things exciting for everyone.”

“It should be an interesting race tomorrow, this grid is so tight, there was only a tenth and a half between third and seventh so I am not concerned about Checo starting from P5. It’s a long lap to race around here and I am confident he will be in a good place to compete for the podium.”

RACE PREDICTOR: Who do you think will finish on the podium for the Bahrain Grand Prix?
    01 March 2024
    Formula One - Official Site

Max Verstappen secured his 33rd career pole for the Bahrain Grand Prix as he kicked off his 2024 in style. The Red Bull man edged out Ferrari rival Charles Leclerc for the top spot and will hope to convert that into victory in Saturday's race.

But, as we've so often seen, anything can happen on race day. Can Leclerc and Ferrari translate their performance improvement in the Grand Prix, or can the likes of Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin show what they're made of?

Don't count out Sergio Perez from getting involved in the battle for the podium either, with the RB20 at his disposal.

There were question marks in the build-up to the Bahrain GP, and Verstappen’s controlled victory answered many of them. Carlos Sainz managed an impressive third place for Ferrari, but the SF-24 is still a few steps behind the reigning Champions. At least the Spaniard enjoyed a more quiet race than his teammate.

Verstappen dominates to open the 2024 season with a win
    2nd March 2024
    by Emer Hedderman
    FormulaSpy

Bahrain Grand Prix – Max Verstappen continued where he left off last year, winning from pole with a sizeable gap to Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz. As the lights went out to start the season, the top three held position, Leclerc tried for the lead as they went into T1 but Verstappen held him off. Russell remained in P3 while Sergio Perez got the best of Carlos Sainz to snatch P4 from the Ferrari racer.

Verstappen was the last to head to the pits, stopped at the end of lap 17 and rejoined with a five second gap to Perez. As that was happening, Sainz continued to push, setting the fastest lap as he closed up to and flew past Russell for the final podium spot.

A few laps later Mercedes told both their drivers to lift and coast as they were overheating in traffic, while on lap 25 Hamilton also reported that his seat was broken. At the halfway point of the race, all cars were still running. At the front, Verstappen was 14 seconds ahead of Perez in P2 while Sainz remained around two seconds further back in P3.

Horner after Bahrain GP: 'Huge achievement as a team'
    Published on 02 March 2024
    by Niels Hendrix
    Verstappen.nl

Christian Horner, CEO and team principal of Oracle Red Bull Racing, says after the Grand Prix of Bahrain: “Today was a great performance by Max and Checo. To come out the race with a one-two finish was a huge achievement as a team and both drivers brought a really strong performance and gave it everything. They both had the perfect start to a very dominant race: Max drove a strong race from start to finish and Checo really came through the field, made a couple of good passes and drove a great race.”

Horner continues: “We have to thank everyone back in Milton Keynes this winter who have worked so hard and come up with another great car. This win is testimony to that hard work that goes on behind the scenes. So it was a great team performance once again and we are incredibly pleased to achieve maximum points today. The team have done a wonderful job with the car and they haven't rested on their laurels. They've pushed hard and it has paid off today with a fantastic result.”

Our verdict on the scale of Verstappen's Bahrain GP domination
    Mar 2, 2024
    The Race

WORRYINGLY EASY, Scott Mitchell-Malm: The size of Verstappen’s winning margin isn’t as concerning to me as the ease with which he seemed to accrue it. And that’s saying something when he’s just cruised to a win by more than 20 seconds.
IT WON’T ALWAYS BE THIS EASY, Ben Anderson: Verstappen’s domination of this race was expected. He simply picked up where he left off last season and enjoyed a trouble-free run.\

RESPECT THE BRILLIANCE FROM RED BULL, Josh Suttill: At a certain point, you've just got to stand back and applaud the job Red Bull has once again done.
SHOULD WE HAVE EXPECTED ANYTHING ELSE?, Gary Anderson: I suppose the question really is: should we have expected anything different?

SO LITTLE HAS CHANGED, Valentin Khorounzhiy: I'm mindful of being too negative - it gets annoying really fast if that's all you're bringing to the table.
WE WERE TEASED, Matt Beer: OK, no one really went into 2024 expecting anything other than Verstappen winning the Bahrain GP. Not many people went into this morning expecting anything other than that.
JUST ENJOY THE GREATNESS, Jack Benyon: …F1 does that to a much lesser extent and as a result you get to witness absolute greatness. Make no mistake, that’s what we’re seeing from Red Bull - delivering another stonking car that is only going to get quicker - and to a greater extent, Verstappen.

Carlos Sainz sends Mercedes message as Max Verstappen cruises to Bahrain GP win
Max Verstappen extended his race-winning streak by dominating the Bahrain Grand Prix from start to finish.

    Daily and Sunday Express

Carlos Sainz thrust his name into the conversation for Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes seat in 2025 with an impressive performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Ferrari star picked up the 'Driver of the Day' award from the fans for his performance, climbing from fourth on the grid to seal the final podium place, finishing just behind second-placed Sergio Perez as Max Verstappen dominated.

Speaking after the race, Sainz said: "I felt really good out there today, the start wasn't great, from then on I just managed my tyres well and then I could do my race. "I overtook two or three cars on the way to the podium and keeping up with the Red Bull there was a pleasant surprise. It's still not enough and where we want to be. Good step forward and a solid start to the season."
