If they had changed it yesterday, would he still got a penalty?

It depends on when the scrutineering took place, but I believe if Tänak sensed that something was wrong with the car, it must have happened before the scrutineering. He would have needed to test the car earlier to get a sense that something wasn't right

16.1.1 In the case of engine failure between scrutineering and TC0 it is permitted to replace the engine but a 5-minute penalty will be applied.

And also you can see he has 0 motivation for driving.

Home rally, friends and fans everywhere.... zero motivation. Ok, maybe he will retire at end of this year then.

Did they drive the car in stage mode yesterday so that he can hear/feel an issue?

    -----

The Puma has had trouble with reliability ever since introduced
Yet there also seems to be a pattern where whatever car he drives it has issues.
2017 Fiesta, Yaris WRC, I20 WRC and Rally1 and now Puma. A bit too much to be a coincidence tbh.

    - Is it his driving/handling of the car? There is some evidence to that from his Yaris time, where some issues seemed directly related to risky setups (ride height+springs/dampers in GB) or simply too much push (Sardinia jump).

    - Or is it just that he gets so much extra publicity? Evans has had quite a few issues with Rally1 car last two years, yet it is nowhere as often in headlines.

If it was before scrutineering they are complete idiots.

    This is proper facepalm.

I remember during Hyundai times, we made jokes (wasn't actually funny, because it was as sad) that we need go to SS1 if we want to see Tänak as well, because we never know does the Hyundai reach to SS2. Now, times have changed - you need to watch first pass on shakedown.

But Monte and this fast rally are totally different.

Last year with five minute loss Loubet got 7th place

Wanted to push reply but accidentally liked the quote, but... For engine failure, which by itself is a rare case these days, setup can't do much harm.
But I'm pretty sure suspension problems are caused by setup

Rally Estonia - no small impacts. Even before the rally starts.
