Longer gearbox is not always a good solution as then car isn't accelerating that good. Especially on sandy roads it might be an issue, I think both fastest Fiestas swapped from long ones to short ones just before or during the rally.
SS10, last one yesterday was won by Jeets in ERC, Samsonas in Open class rally set same time in his homemade BMW...

If the long gearbox for Fiesta isn't useful even in Estonia, where is it?

it's not that simple, it might be not good for Estonia, but good for Finland for example. theoretically same very fast roads, but in Estonia much softer, so car is not accelerating on long ratios. honestly I thought with Evo engine it won't be the case anymore, but looks like it still is.

This is very interesting thing for me. We have seen similar sometimes strange looking thing in the past as well. For example we have had here someone from M-Sport on this forum who gave an explanation why M-Sport could not use long gearbox for Fiesta S2000 in Ypres (it was years a go) because from their testing it wasn't beneficial even with all those long straights. But Škoda did it. They run very long gearboxes in Ypres and kept winning year by year. Later I learned that according to the rules of S2000 they were allowed to change gear ratios of 4th-6th gear but not 1st-3rd gear or final drive and that's where the difference between the cars was because Fiesta had shorter first three gears and therefore suffered more from prolonging of the other three.
I am not sure how it is with R5 cars but with S2000 it was a bit more complicated as there the long gearbox meant longer 4th-6th gears, the acceleration from slow corners was same because 1st-3rd gear were same for short and long gearbox. I guess it's not that case with R5 cars. Anyway for Fabia S2000 it was a wrong decision as others proved that time.
Bartek, how is the long gearbox done in R5? Is it different final drive or a different set of gears?Stupid is as stupid does. Forrest Gump

Pretty let's say 'interesting' road order situation today with half the top juniors sweeping and half coming way later. Has this happened much before in ERC - I don't recall seeing it?

Those both runs through the 2nd stage in the loops were absolutely mega from Thierry. Kind of like a champions-esque drive we have seen from the Sebs for the past two decades. He was unfortunate not...
