Gadjo...if you drilled straight down from Bucharesti you would emerge in the South Pacific about a third of the way from NZ to Chile.

Schmenke...Beijing matches up with someplace in Argentina.

Taz..re-read my question...I said 'shortest route' and 'furthest apart'. The ellipsoidal nature of the geoid need not be relevant, as it affects ALL antipodal points by definition.

My question could be re-posed as: Using the shortest route..what's the longest plane ride between 2 capitals?..name them

    Here's a pictorial representation: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...podes_LAEA.png

    Description of Longest-haul flights:

The longest routes possible are between antipodes, or points on the Earth's surface opposite each other with the Earth's center directly between, a distance of 20,038 km at the equator. Flights between Buenos Aires and Shanghai, Quito and Kuala Lumpur, Wellington and Madrid or Perth and Bermuda, have a distance of flight at 19,602 km, 19,715 km, 19,851 km and 19,918 km, respectively. A theoretical non-stop flight between Málaga and Auckland, which are nearly antipodal, would cover a great circle distance of flight at 19,943 km.

I thought my guess might be close, seeing as you said capital cities... I grew up in Madrid and am still a bit of a stargazer so I prepared my Wanaka trip a couple of years ago accordingly.

Just watching Simon Reeve in Indonesia... how long would it take him to visit each island there if he visited a different island every day?
