Is a steeriing wheel Necessart for r-factor?
or will a cheaper controller suffice?

I would reccomend a wheel for rFactor. Using the keyboard only gives you so much control. If you have a joystick, you can give it a try, but I dont think it would make you competitive. The controller section in the game allows you to map wheel/pedals and keys to do everything you couid do in a real car and more. I know I need good pedals with lots of resolution points to be really smooth on the track. Thrustmaster and Logitech have good entry level wheels that will get you playing quickly for under $100.
