Some months a go they presented a truck with long nose, Mercedes cabin and Buggyra engine but those trucks which are now in the race are looking same as last year. I don't know what happend, maybe some split with Mercedes, maybe something connected to the sanctions against Russia. I don't know.

Just saw a video of the day 1 accident. Very shocking...
Prokop had a puncture today.
Yep, it's really an unpredictable Dakar. It even seems to got some Monte Carlo flair: changing weather; tricky roads and Loeb at the front!
The limited time frame was determinant for Peugeot choice, but surely they've got some kind of promise from ASO that 2wd regs wouldn't change for some time and the routes would be chosen in a balanced way (Peru pull out was totally unexpected).
Above all, it's great to see they've managed to make a new competitive car, after their quicly developed '15 version. Good for Peugeot, good for the race!
There was a deal between Kamaz and Mercedes about some sort of joint venture in Kazan (perhaps the Kamaz truck with Mercedes cabin should have been produced there). Maybe the deal was blocked by politics and sanctions and as such the "mixed" truck became illegal for the race. That's just my assumption.
In fact Tatra uses DAF cabins for Phoenix model (Valtr has it on Dakar) and it's no issue when it's part of stock production.
Anyway it looks like there is a real performance step from year to year and Kamaz looks somewhat unprepared. Let's see later.
This is the video of the prologue stage crash. It's a miracle no one was killed

Nice to see the Peugeot team so high in the rankings, 4 cars in top 8. Let's hope reliability won't be a big issue so to enjoy a fight with the Minis, do anyone recall which were the biggest problems for Peugeot last year?
Prokop rolled today.
The overall design!

Petherhansel words on '16 car:
“You can really feel the difference now that the car is longer and wider, with a lower centre of gravity, because it’s a lot more stable so cornering speeds are faster. You can feel the difference in the engine as well: not only is it more powerful but also you can use all the power even at low revs. We’ve almost got a ‘problem’ now of how to manage all that power most effectively, but this is a very nice problem to have. We’re still not at the maximum of our capabilities, but testing has been very productive so far.”
The new suspension geometry also helped getting it more stable and easy to push to the limits. The '16 changes weren't only small evolutions like Famin said, it's a whole new car, designed with drivers inputs (mostly SP). This time it seems they've got it right!
See this video. It shows all the changes very well

Yesterday's leg was first part of a marathon leg which means there was no service tonight. Am I right?
Yes, correct.
Some info from our media.
Malysz helped Prokop to get back on the wheels.
Loprais had a serious problem with wheel bearing of his Iveco and may be out of the race due to no available service tonight.
Kolomý complained about lack of power in the high altitude but otherwise said it was ok.
Prokop's car before start from his facebook page (they spent allowed time on more important things and the remaining puncture will be changed today right after the start of first liason):

Nice to see Mr Loeb is making Dakar as predictable as WRC...(nothing against Loeb his just unbeatable).
I guess we will see Nasser buying himself a seat in a Peugeot for next year...
Or leaving the car sport definitively for the ball trap :)
Today they reach altitude up to 4600 meters!
Yep ! And it was certainly very difficult physically!
Top 3 in the leg for Peugeot and another scratch for Loeb.
Loprais unofficially out with broken wheel bearing from yesterday.
Peugeot rules for now indeed.
Team de Rooij confirms exit of Loprais on Facebook.
