After reading the Thierry Neuville interview in the Rally Argentina thread posted by Dimviii it looks to me that Neuville has painted himself into a corner for this event.
As he stated he will be free of “manufacturer” responsibilities and will be able to go for a result.
Because of his current position in the championship he is going to have a very favourable start order for the first two day of the event, possible all days of the event.
Following Argentina he knows how strong and fast the car is. Paddon and to a slightly lesser extent Sordo proved that.
In short he can go for it, maximum attack, only his own personal result is what matters.
He has talked the talk, now he must walk the walk.
If he wins, well that is what is expected because of the reasons stated above.
If he bins it then he has exceeded his talent
There can be no excuses, he has to be like a light switch, either it is on or it is off, there can be no maybes in his performance.
He'll probably crash on the morning loop on Friday.
Place your bets now.
To me it´s enough if he´s on the podium. The talk wasn´t then too much. You guys have to understand what he´s saying between the lines.
The whole collecting manufacturer points "pressure" is just a smokescreen and an excuse. We've all said before that being fast and collecting points for your team is all part of being a professional driver.
This season it should not be a factor in the slightest. It's completely irrelevant who is scoring points on what rallies as the championship is effectively set this year. Hyundai can't beat VW and they aren't under pressure from M-Sport behind.
I can't criticise Thierry for when his car has mechanical issues. But when he has a healthy car we just aren't seeing the stage times. It feels from a quick scan this year that he's averaging out at about sixth fastest.
However his mental view is different from yours. Would be a highly probable reason for his arguments.
Useless excuses from Neuville I am afraid. If he wants to be the top paid and have n°1 status he has to bring points to the team, just like any other top frontman.
I imagine this thread still is about Rallye de Portugal...
A look into Porto street stage:

Interest in Portugal for me centres mostly on whether MSport / Ostberg can show better times; and if DMack 's new gravel tyres can improve theirs...
I also hope Tanak will be closer to the top 3 times. Nice effort by Dmack, realy hope they can improve a lot.
Also hope Neuville can do a decent job here, podium could be a mental boost.
Meeke will be fast here to i guess.
19 WRC's is cool, eventhough not al of them will be driven properly.
Any tips on wich ZE's are best to visit? Is it possible to go and see the stage in some other (non ZE) places?
Is the famous jump from the Fafe sprint included in the Fafe stage? and which zone is this.

Indeed, the pressure argument is imo only valid for young drivers when they are put in the spotlight and could be distracted by things like media attention. So there it makes sense to have them in the third car where they are not so followed as the two "main" drivers. Otherwise it's bs, in reality what they mean is: "We care about the manufacturers standiungs so we're putting the two drivers who actually finish rallies in the points scoring cars."
I'm disappointed that Thierry hasn't developed into a challenger. He was showing promise that he could, at least partially bother Ogier. The sport desperately needs at least more potential rally winners if not title contenders.
This morning I drove almost the entire Viana stage to reach and leave Mikkelsen's test ahead of the rally. I found some parts really damaged, as you can see on the picture below. They were arranging some parts, for example the stone pavement at the top of the stage. Luckily, the sun is coming next week.

Bertelli to skip the rally because he got an injury playing football with friends.
Not that this is an interesting and useful news...
Henning Solberg's son Osacar will have Patrik Barth as a co-driver for Rally Portugal. I would assume that Patrik is Gunnar Barth's son?

There are rally drivers who rally in cast, rally drivers that rally after shoulder surgery, rally drivers that rally with broken fingers.... and then there is Lorenzo Bertelli...
Was he evacuated with a helicopter from the football pitch ?

Portuguese guys and bluuford, may you update us on the weather? Have to play my pickems :)
Mostly sunny weather with clouds on Saturday.
http://www.accuweather.com/en/pt/mat...weather/275271
The forecast says sunny weather and 20 degrees all week except Saturdays so I would assume that the roads will be dry.

No Cherain in Portugal, reason given is that the dad of his codriver passed away recently. He will start instead at Ypres with a Fiesta R5 Evo from H Racing, he is done with D-Max Racing.
Dry weather until Saturday. Cloudy and Rainshowers are expected on Saturday, some might be strong, but it will be isoletaed to some locations, mostly afternoon. Saturday and Sunday will be relatively cold and Sunday morning should be without any wind, so dust+fog might be issue if there is not enough rain on Saturday. So, better to know Sunday stages by heart :P especially first one ;)
