This is common thing in almost all asphalt countries. Usually it is a precondition from local authorities. Without measures to prevent road damage they often don't allow stage running there. I don't like it either but they are right. The damage to the asphalt roads caused by cutting can be in some cases really huge and somebody would have to pay the repairs.
Strangely for example here in CZ the majority of drivers like that (especially those from down the field who would otherwise drive in completely different conditions than those in front). On the other hand for example in Belgium drivers mostly refuse anti-cutting obstacles.
I noticed the Arab drivers on Rally Cyprus recently were taking huge cuts and nothing wad said...
As for France, those markers dont look right at all.. hay bails with metal inside would be better.
What's all the fuss about? It has been like this in Rallye de France since 2010, nothing changed...

They don't get hit very often. As I said it's nothing new. Basically almost all Europe uses various anti-curring obstacles on thousands of stages and these signs are one of the most common things which are used.
From wrc.com in 2013: "Rallye de France-Alsace organisers have made special efforts to reduce the amount of mud and gravel dragged onto the asphalt stages by drivers cutting corners. The inside of many bends are lined by a series of heavy bollards to keep cars on the asphalt and prevent drivers shaving tenths of a second from their time by cutting."
But looking at the photos from 2013 there is no sign of any poles, posts, or even the barriers mentioned above...
So it is different in 2014.
No, it's not new. Every single year since it was moved to Alsace there has been the same discussion here about anti-cutting obstacles in Rallye de France. Only the type of obstacles changes. I still can't believe why some of you see it as something special...
Find some pictures from Rally France 2013 showing anti-cutting obstacles... I cant find one... just lots like this:

There are some here.
Do You realize that there is something like 200 km of roads used for the rally? Each kilometer has plenty of turns. It's totally impossible to prevent cutting everywhere and it's also meaningless. It's done where it is required by local authorities or for some other reason. Nobody puts those obstacles just because he thinks it's fun. They have been used in Alsace always. It's no news and it's nothing special. Just live with that.

Any non-WRC shakedown times?
Chardonnet is fast:

14. #5 flag Hirvonen Mikko - Lehtinen Jarmo icon Ford Fiesta RS WRC 2:46.8 2:43.5
15. #22 flag Maurin Julien - Klinger Nicolas icon Ford Fiesta RS WRC 2:52.0 2:46.0

17. #39 flag Gilbert Quentin - Jamoul Renaud icon Ford Fiesta R5 2:50.8 2:47.0
I see in response to the non-WRC times question you've included Mikko, Maurin and Prokop - Freudian slip?
Well the fastest 4 are the top four (though not in correct order) of my Pickem. They are going to be one battle, then the next 4 look to be contesting positions 5-8 in the absence of top 4 retirements / punctures etc. Looks like I need to replace Bouffier as he just doesn't seem to have the 'feel' of the Hyundai.
