Toyota plans a 3 cylinder 1 liter R5.
https://www.rallye-magazin.de/int/ar...lindern-41617/
Is this a good idea, and will FIA say yes to their request?
I can't find anything that says "1 litre" in the article.
So three cylinder 1600cc turbo, is it a torque thing then?
Can anyone think of any successful three cylinder motorsport engines for cars? (in something other than a one make series for Toyota aygo or whatever).
I sure as hell can't, and I can't imagine this will possibly end well.
You can't call that successful rally car, but you can call this one - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_Union_1000
Also SAAB used 3 cyl 2 stroke:

But the Ford 1 litre engine is amazing piece of engineering!

So whatīs the thing then? Bore x stroke changes? Less weight moving?
Any engineers telling theoretically thoughts?
Exactly. Estonian driver Ken Torn entered 3 ERC events with this car this year. And he won them all, despite good competitors. Check out ERC3 standings:

M-Sport Essi said that it isnīt FORD RS blue but colour is great
Post moved from Rally Deutschland topic. You can continue here the discussion if you want.
The main point is just that the car is not good. A driver like Camilli or Suninen should be good enough to be on pace with any R5. This was proved by Breen, who won rallies with the old Fiesta and even with the Hyundai. Drivers with less experience have won WRC2 with Fabias and Polos (and old Fiestas).
When a private team or driver decides to buy a new car, they aren't today relying only on marketing talk. They can watch videos and read results, they know what the cars can do. It's not down to magic tricks.
Too early to write off the new Fiesta R5. Let's see how it develops. The new Fabia R5 is (at this moment) hardly faster than the old one.
On the other hand I had a rather long talk about the Fiesta with an engineer from one of the potential customer and this guy was honestly shocked how bad the car appeared so far. As everyone he expected it to be much better than what it has shown so far. And it was not only about the stage times or the drivers but also about the dreadful appearance in Finland and Estonia where the car looked like it was all just an initial testing.
Maybe so... M-Sport did put all their efforts into the WRC car for Ogier in the last two years.
Not surprising if the new R5 is undercooked.
If you take out the two factory Skodas it seems like Polo is the fastest R5 atm.
Yes, I also think that the Polo is the fastest R5 now. There is still some work on the reliability though.
That's a nice oldschool livery on Grondal's new Fiesta R5:

There are 9 other R5 cars on the entry list, so there will be a chance to compare the car against other competitors (but, apart from Veiby and Larsen, their names tell me nothing):

Good luck to the new Ford!
