Tought i should start this thread because i have some great news for you The "Eye In The Sky" is back this year.

Hi Tor Yes, we will have the "Eye in the Sky" this year.
Kind regards Rally New Zealand

Hopefully they wil have a better line this year because it was a bit overloaded at times last year.

Well rally fever is cranking up in New Zealand. Will be good to see it around Hamilton for the second time. Weather here recently has been crap to say the least. Will be good though, less dust the better.

Roll on rally time!!

14th August 2007, 09:43
think i might be missing it too, bugger. first time i wont be at the international for quite a few years

cannot get friday off work, and having had no work for about 7 months $$ is a little tight. i can always find money to go watch rallies, but dunno if i can afford traveling from wellington to only see about 4 stages

as an aside, i'm curious to know what were peoples impressions of the route as last year? (for those that who went). i thought the new roads they used were fantastic, but i didn't really like the midday service at mystry creek, there was a very long 3 hour gap between the morning and afternoon, and not nearly enough stages as a result. i was hoping they would use remote servicing on friday and saturday this year, and was a little bit surprised to find they weren't.
i'm not so sure about just 2 special stages on friday morning and just the same 2 in the afternoon, and that being the day pretty much done. that didn't really work out spectating wise for us last year, what did others make of it?
i reckon it would be neat to see stages like te papatapu and bridal veil in the mix again too if that were possible.

enjoy the rally for those that are going - i reckon i'll be suffering severe withdrawal symptoms as it gets closer (but do have the daybreaker to look forward to in 2 weeks)

cheers

I am looking forward to seeing the Lancer!! Fabulous looking cars! Im lucky to see Aava. Matt would be lucky too but HES NOT GOING!! (i can hear the steam whistling out his ears too).

Will be a good rally im sure. Hoping the marshall's are as lapse as least years were. Means we can wander up and down the roads for good spectating!
Will be nice to see a field of 16 WRC cars if i remember correctly...

Roll on Rally NZ!!!

Last year it was a very interesting rally. Very good performances from Gronhölm and Pons, and remember Rossi? He did a prety clean run. Too bad he's not performing this season's rally.

It's one of the last places where Marcus can fight against Sèbastien. Loeb's the king of tarmac that's for sure, and despite having the Fords closer to the C4's performance, after Germany Gronhölm needs a good result if he wants to raise the championship cup in Wales. We should also take a look at Mikko Hirvonen and Chris Atkinson, both performed well in the past few years and they should have a fight for the last podium possition. I guess it's also a good chance for Petter Solberg to make a move, but you never know as we could see lately. Anyway, he sould make a great rally, as this is a place that he has domained in the past.

Go Marcus!! Teach em' how old school does it :D

It is logical, last year the MotoGP was already done for Rossi when he took part in Rally New Zealand. This year New Zealand is much earlier.

Rally NZ was great last year, it was the first event I was able to follow with broadband (thanks to free College Broadband :D ) so the eye in the sky feed with World Rally Radio meant I didn't really miss anything (although couldn't get acess to €sport for the half hour highlights) but the Live stuff made up for that :)

Unfortunatley I wont have acess to the Live stuff for NZ this year as its on a couple of weeks early and I won't be back in time for NZ..d'oh

It should be an Interesting event all the same :) hard to believe that it might be the Lancers final fling..

Reigning P-WRC rally champion Nasser Al-Attiyah has been forced to pull out of N-Z after he rolled his car during filming for a protional video

Rossi will do the GB rally this year

Sweet! Can only be a good thing for the WRC.

Looking forward to Rally NZ again. This will be my 25th Rally NZ event I've spectated. It all started by accident when I stumbled across the 1977 event as a kid. I didn't even know what was going on but in 'The Domain' (the big central park in the middle of Auckland) the roads were blocked off for a 'special event'. Turned out to be the very last stage of the rally that year. Vivid memories of a Escort sideways through a corner. I'm guessing (hoping) it was Ari...not really sure.
Was hooked ever since.

yeah its raining here at the moment :(

stupid hamilton weather!

I will be going out to the recce tomorrow, so I hope it doesnt rain the whole time.. as I have a few (and expensive!) prints that I want the drivers to sign.. rather do it when they are having a little break (as what happened at the start of whaanga coast last year) as to not damage them much, compaired to trying to get them to sign it at service etc

Definatly looks like it will be a wet rally.. especially with that low pressure right over us at the moment.

I also looked at long range forecast, theres a anti-cyclone coming, with westerly winds (very light) for Friday, a small amount of drizzle rain Saturday with slight westerly winds again and sunday the low pressure has moved off the east coast of NZ out to sea leaving us with fine weather and a warm northerly breeze.....

Wonder what will happen weatherwise.......

The WRC bit on the entry list is probably there just because they are A8 cars..

Don't suppose you know if the Makkinen editions are genuine ex-works GpA 6.5s from RalliArt/MMSP, Rugby, UK or built locally in NZ from road going shells?

It would be nice to hear from Mr.Piran about their car :)

Well.. was a wet and muddy recce today.. Aava's car broke down on the first run through Te Hutewai, so I don't know if he was able to get a 2nd pass through Whaanga Coast, Te Hutewai and 2 runs through Maungatauwhiri.

I am uploading my pics now.. as I was able to get into the service park ^_^ and snap a few shots..

Also sorry to Sordo.. cause while I was at the service park, he jumped in a car to leave.. and while I was walking past he reversed and almost took out a garbage wheely bin.. and I just stood there looking/laughing.. should of done the decent thing and moved it for him.. lol

Anyways pics.. uploading.. slowly..

Revised forecast saying now it is to rain on Friday and Saturday with rain clearing up both days in the evening. So no rain when they are not rallying, rain when they are rallying. Sounds like a pretty rubbish deal to me!!! haha.

WRC is WRC however! awesome!

Dingardo
29th August 2007, 08:27
Well... I wonder if someone else might be able to clear this up.. but why was Loeb late to the SSS recce this afternoon?

All the WRC guys had done their 2nd pass, and the P3/NP drivers were about to go in when suddenly Loeb turned up. I wasn't able to get a good look, but I am sure that was not Elena in the codriver seat. Perhaps Daniel was sick or something?

Anyways today was a really nice day.. hopefully that can continue throughout the weekend.. :/

Yes the weather was on and off for shakedown, but hey it was easy to retire to the undercover service park when it rained. I must say I was impressed with how many runs the WRC cars did, a lot more than I was expecting. Praise also to the organisers for letting the P1 cars have a 4hr shakedown window.

and if my memory serves me right the top 4 in shakedown were:

memory blank after that, but I do remember Seb only being 10th quickest.

The advantage of a 100-400mm lens :D

Very tricky conditions to take good photos, most of the stage was back lit and the light was all over the place.

Official Shakedown Results

1. Latvala 2:24.8
2. Gronholm 2:25.1
3. Atkinson 2:25.8
4. P Solberg 2:25.9
5. H Solberg 2:26.0
6. Hirvonen 2:26.8
7. Sordo 2:27.4
8. Wilson 2:28.4
8. Pons 2:28.4
10. Stohl 2:29.0
11. Loeb 2:29.6

Citroen fans don't be too worried, they did far less runs than the other teams.

30th August 2007, 04:35

curry
30th August 2007, 04:41
Hey Stalks,

I don't remember any damage to his car, I think the area you are looking at is affected by the light coming through the trees. That photo was back lit, so its not 100%.

Having said that there was plenty of bumper damage going on; Atkinson, Solberg, Companc to name just a few

Dingardo
30th August 2007, 04:45
haha yeah.. atkinson and solberg were taking some VIPs for a spin when they damaged their bumpers.. due to the shakedown stage cutting up very badly just before the middle section there..

and damn.. wish i had a better lens.. I only have the standard 18-55mm lens :/

not to mention not really knowing much about how to use my camera :p lol.. only got it about 3 weeks ago

Wow! What a long day. Just got back from Shakedown and Rallyshow.
Heard some interesting news from various sources. I should put them on the News and Rumours thread but it's easier to do it here.

Heard from the 'Communications' dude at Subaru that they will be running a third car for all 16 events next year. He didn't mentioned Pons name but hinted at it. He also said they are only a signature or so away from a 4th car. It that is confirmed then they were put the number 3 & 4 cars together as a Subaru B team. He also said that Subaru wants Atkinson back next year even though his contract runs out after Rally GB 07.

Also spoke to mechanics of Aava's Lancer. They said they only had 28 days left of employment before Ralliart in Rugby shuts it's doors. MMC doesn't want to fund it anymore. What becomes of the cars he didn't know. He said there is currently 7 complete cars and 17 shells. He didn't know of any sales so crushing could be one possibility. What a waste.

Spoke with Ken Block also. Travis Prastana didn't make it to NZ for the recce as mentioned in the media. His Grandmother died and he stayed back in the US.

Didn't take many photos today, but hopefully I got some good video (before my camera spat the dummy). I'll do a edit and put it up on Youtube next week.

Got to get to bed. Early start again tomorrow.

Thanks for all the SWRT and MMMS? news, Maui.
Subaru B Team mmmm......interesting!

1/I think all the forumers should put our money together and buy one of the Lancer WRCars.
2/Then we could use our worldwide resources to find a sponsor
and run it in 2008 WRC.
3/Then all we'd have to do is decide on a driver......err

Forget this idea, steps 1 and 2 are possible, but.....

Agreed. IMO Atkinson is in a good state of mind, his car seems to be reasonably quick and assuming the car doesnt fail him ill back him to be in 3rd come Sunday.

Having said that, Chris will make some stupid mistake, and ill be blamed for cursing him:P

Having spent 40 minutes watching after all 3 Subaru drivers after they finished shakedown, I get the feeling that Petter is going nowhere but more interestingly Chris was putting a lot of input into the team meeting which took place behind glass windows for over 30 minutes. This is only conjecture on my behalf but the feeling I got was that Chris has really come of age in the team since I last saw him live in Sweden (mind you he has more experience in NZ than Sweden). The reason I think Petter is going nowhere is because he spent over 40 minutes with Danny the data analyst after Shakedown (both Chris and Xavier had gone) - didn't look like someone who is feed up with the team.

I also spoke to Richard, Chris's chief engineer later in the night and he confirmed that Chris is a big chance for a podium 'if' he can stay on the road on the 2nd day.

7hrs till I have to be on the road, so sleep now.

Cheers

Mikko should be able to make some impression on Loeb but so far, nothing.

EDIT: Except that he's closer to Seb than Seb is to Marcus.

Mikko have failed his tyre choise. Or that is my guess.

This is going to be a looooong stage to wait Atkinson's time if his split won't show.

The only weakness Loeb seem to have is that he is not awake right from the start. Marcus made bigger gap in much shorter stage than this one as he attacked instantly.

Loeb is always a slow started....but he cannot afford it here with such a long stage.....

Seems like Marcus made the right tyre choice.

When Mikko finishes the stage, please listen if he has anything to say about the tyres. Unfortunately I cannot listen the radio here at work. :(
