Incredible close tonight... ;)
Can a rally really be ending up as a draw.. ?
What happens if Loeb catches up on exactly those 0,7 sec?
Do they share the 1.place... or... are there some other rules that come into action... ?

22.3 Dead heat in a Championship rally
In the event of a dead heat in a rally, the competitor
who accomplished the best time for the first special
stage will be proclaimed winner. If this is not sufficient
to be able to decide between the competitors who are
tied, the times of the second, third, fourth, etc. special
stages shall be taken into consideration. This rule
may be applied at any time during the rally.

Thanks bt52b. So, the answer is Gronholm wins if they finish tie.

SS5 Mystery Creek 1 - Loeb
.............................- Bosse +.5s
SS9 Mystery Creek 2 - Loeb +.4s
.............................- Bosse
Thats only a 0,1 sec advantage for Seb in average over two runs...
Quess that means that Bosse is out of reach for Seb then.... :)

that's one Super special Stage you dont want to miss!!!
what a thrill!!!!
I think Marcus will take it.. but it will be Allen's way, Maximum attack for both of them!
PS: that SSS might very weel decide of the Title!!!!!!
Yes, it will be very difficult for Loeb to take this but it is certainly a possibility. And if Loeb manages to win the rest of the rallies and Gronholm keeps second, they will actually tie in championship points. It's very, very close!

Silly rule. Should count number of fastest stage times before they do something like that who won a random stage.

It's not a random stage at all. It's the same stage each event and everybody knows which one it will be.
Being the 1st stage also means that it is one that has been contested with all entrants still in the event before any mishaps have occurred.
And bein such a simple rule there can be no confusion.

Marcus Grönholm wins closest battle in years
New Zealand - SS 18 - 3.14 km
[02/09/07 - 05:22]
Marcus Grönholm has emerged victorious in New Zealand on the very last stage of the rally after he and championship rival Sébastien Loeb entertained the fans with one of the most down-to-the-wire conclusions the WRC has known in a long time.
Elated with the win and jumping onto the roof of his Ford team car, the Finn breathed in the applause of the energised crowd.
"Fantastic! Very very good!" said the Finn in the seconds following his 30th career victory and fifth consecutive New Zealand win. When asked if it had been the race of his life, he answered "Maybe."
After several hundred kilometres of competition this week-end, Grönholm's win was accomplished with an overall advantage of only three thirds of a second. The last run over the Mystery Creek super special has become a very special moment of the World Rally Championship.
Sébastien Loeb, who won this super special stage with a time of 2'52"5, only 0'00"4 faster than Grönholm's second place, has been rewarded with the second step of the podium. It must be said that a victory for Loeb would have been as rightly deserved as it was for Grönholm.
The two works Subaru drivers still in the race came next, with Petter Solberg ahead of Chris Atkinson, followed by Stobart Ford driver Henning Solberg. Citroën's Dani Sordo and Ford's Mikko Hirvonen tied for the sixth spot.
Eighth place went to Jari-Matti Latvala at the controls of another Stobart Ford Focus. OMV Kronos Citroën's Manfred Stohl took ninth, followed by Luis Perez Companc who drove into tenth for the Munchi's Ford team.
After much excitement and pressure, Marcus Grönholm's victory in New Zealand was only 0'00"3 ahead of Sébastien Loeb. Mikko Hirvonen managed a safe third overall position without ever being really challenged for it. The other duel of this rally concluded with Chris Atkinson finishing 4.6 seconds ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala.
The World Rally Championship will resume in October in Spain, where the 12th of the 2007 season's 16 events will take place.

There are still 3 rounds, Japan, Ireland AND GB
But beating Toshi in his home event (although he will have lots of pressure) won't be easy. I even think that Japan is Toshi's last round this year
Will be hard to keep Toshi from a 2nd title

SubaruNorway1 already posted a link to my list above (see post 1071). Yes, this is the closest WRC win ever (unless two dead heats of 1973 Safari and 1985 Ivory Coast are included and I don't think those should as it was not same overall timing concept but penalties). The outgoing record is 2.1 seconds between Colin McRae and Carlos Sainz in 1998 Portugal.

I think this win was more important mentally to Marcus. Last time it was Seb who won similar type of extra-tight fight in Japan. Seb also has so long tradition of succes (three consecutive world title) that he has been more comfortable for the moment - relaxation of long time winner. Now Marcus has four gravel win in the row and there is appearing nice streak of succes.

I've just watched the rally coverage and I have to say that the Maori pronunciation that they used was just awful. Their pronunciation of "Te Akau" and "Te Hutewai" was awkward but bearable compared to their pronunciation of "Maungatawhiri" and "Whaanga". Other than that, I thought their coverage was good. I got to see every place that I spectated again on TV, complete with incar footage :)

Is this the first WRC rally when timing to the 1/10th of a second has decided the result?
I think when it was previously only done to the full seconds, that you got a time to the whole second before so a time ending say 7.9s would get 7s recorded.
It would be interesting to see with a rally was as close as this one, if a different result would have been produced under the old timing.

Yeah mate, FFART tours!
Pickled onions raise some eyebrows! People laugh!
They have been eaten by a few WRC drivers over the years, Possum ate our onions every year, he laughed one time when he saw us walking out of a stage and he was at time control. We asked him if he wanted one and he said "yeah of course" so each year we made sure we caught up with him and he sampled our pickled onion brew.
Tommi Makinen was another who has eaten them and gave the seal of approval! Famous onions Matt! This years brew were good also! We were being propelled along by methane gas but was great! Easy way to clear a spectating area in a crowded corner! ;)

What a great event. A classic. You can't get too much closer than that.
Some great battles up front. Marcus vs Loeb, Atko vs Jari, Petter vs Sordo.
Also really impressed with PWRC. Those guys were charging... Juho Hanninen, Richard Mason, Armindo Araujo, Toshi Arai. Pity Patrik Flodin and young Kiwi Hayden Paddon had car problems, they seemed to be on the pace as well. Pozzo also looked impressive.
I wonder if that's the last we see of the Mitsubishi Lancer WRC?
Watched some of the Eye in the Sky, some amazing pics coming out of there. Made me quite proud of our countryside, it looked stunning from those chopper shots. Pity the feed kept stopping.

Our countryside is awesome, doesn't look awesome,it really is!
Many great WRC shots have been taken out on Ranglan's Whaanga Coast stage. Martin Holmes loves NZ for his photography. Of course theres all the other rounds which are very beautiful as well although NZ has that little something which add's to the essence of rally.....

Hey guys, just randomly came back on and found this thread> what do u want to know? my tommi is basically groupN
was a groupn car in nz national champs 2 years ago, only difference from group n now as when i ran it at rally nz is it ran a 34mm restrictor (wrc ) not 36mm group A,
i had a hydrolic handbrake, raised gear leaver and 6.5 front bumper not a evo6 bumper (as 6.5 was never homologated as a group n car it has to look like an evo 6.
any other questions???
piran :D
Thanks for the info :)
The WRC bit on the entry list is probably there just because they are A8 cars..
Don't suppose you know if the Makkinen editions are genuine ex-works GpA 6.5s from RalliArt/MMSP, Rugby, UK or built locally in NZ from road going shells?
(I imagine they might be, but then again I could be wrong..)
It would be nice to hear from Mr.Piran about their car :)
Thanks again
