Grönholm sends a message
New Zealand - SS 1 - 18.31 km *(GO MARCUS!!!!)
[31/08/07 - 00:22]
Broadcasting loud and clear...
The first stage of Rally New Zealed has been named Pirongia West, which is quite apt since its layout crosses a section of the Pirongia Forest Park situated to the southwest of the Hamilton base.
After a quick short stretch, the trail narrows down and becomes very twisty. Much rain fell overnight, leaving the top soil damp and making things slightly easier for the front runners who had to sweep the roads.
For this first test, Marcus Grönholm has started out very strongly despite being the first one on the road to clear the path. His works Ford Focus finished its run with a time of 13'40"5, thereby sending an immense message to title rival Sébastien Loeb, whose Citroën Sport C4 took second place a full 7.2 seconds behind.
Mikko Hirvonen came next into third position, over a dozen seconds slower than his Ford team mate. Chris Atkinson took fourth position aboard one of the official Subaru Imprezas, followed by Jari-Matti Latvala and his Stobart Ford car in fifth.
Dani Sordo drove his works Citroën into sixth. Subaru team mates Petter Solberg and Xevi Pons came next after a close battle, separated by only 0'00"6 in positions seven and eight.
Manfred Stohl of the OMV Kronos Citroën team was the first to make his way through this opening stage with a half-minute delay on the leader. Finishing off the top ten was Stobart's Henning Solberg.
This being the inaugural run of Rally New Zealand's 2007 edition, the leaderboard is identical to the stage results.
The next trail will be the longest of the rally. At over forty kilometres in length, Phil Mills of the Subaru team has deemed it to be a "monster": Waitomo 1.

uh in no way is Loeb a dick or arrogant. He is one of the nicest drivers who does spend time with fans, will sign autographs and will talk to people with whatever time he can give.
There are certain other drivers who people seem to think are uber friendly and generous who are actual dicks in real life.
Reason for Ford and SUbaru to have mor epeople? Because they're more popular cars down under than Citroen.

Exactly.
There's also the fact that he has a job to do. He's not a frigging autograph machine and he has a schedule to work to as well. I bet Loeb signed 100 autographs but didn't sign Dingardo's little brother's hat or something.....

How much time did you remain with Loeb?
How much time did you speak with Loeb?
Who are you to judge somebody whom you know only by what you imagine?
It’s preferable to be respectful and discrete as Loeb while being that stupid as you who don’t know when you must keep silent yourself!
Not to be fan of Loeb or another person is your most strict right; you are not obliged to justify yourself with stupidities and arrogances.
That of which I am certain, it is that you do not know Sebastien Loeb and nothings about the sport fair attitude.
Have a nice and peaceful rally,

OK maybe I came across a bit wrong.. like I am sure he is a decent person.. but like.. he just isnt as.. approachable as the others.. if you get what I mean..
He is usually always lowkey compaired to say Gronholm or Solberg.. thats probably why those two are more popular here.
perhaps it is just different cultures.
Btw I am not saying I don't like him, as I think he is a brilliant driver. He just lacks what Gronholm and Solberg have when it comes to character.

Ok before this gets out of hand and turns into a big flame fest.. just let me explain.. sure I dont know the guy, nor have any right to say things like that about him cause of that reason.. but take this for example, this kid in a wheelchair was brought around the WRC teams yesterday at Shakedown.. Solberg, Gronholm, Hirvonen etc were being nice and putting their arm around him and chatting to him.. Loeb just stood beside him.
Thats the kind of thing I am getting at..
However I bet you go to France and Germany etc and Loeb would probably get the most attention. Just different cultures.
Anyways I apologise if I offended anyone with my comments

Hi, I'm new to this forum, Fan from NZ as well..
While I might not be as extreme as Dingardo's view about Loeb as a Dick, but I just don't quite like Loeb to what I have seen and heard.
he was really distance and cold while I saw him last year ( Ok maybe due to his shoulder injury) but there are stories I heard from my European friends they experience themselves that puts me off even more.
While Looking at Petter and Marcus, they interact with the fans more, Timo actually took time out and had a short chat with me and listen to what I want to say. I just hope Loeb will take the same effort too.

that maori thing was just a joke, but i think it's easy to understand that different people act different ways and has nothing to do with culture, if Loeb wants to focus on what he is there for in his way, instead of signing autographs or answering stupid questions I think is ok.

I think Loeb is a rare example how humble can a guy be after the amount of great success he already has. Throughout the years in WRC, I can name a bunch of way arrogant drivers than he. He for one seem to be sincerely worried if Marcus retires because he fisrtly, enjoy racing against him and secondly, the championship has more value when Marcus is still in a game.
Some might secretly hope otherwise.
Plus, what i've seen from the footage, our finnish reporters have always got their comment from Loeb. That is something even Finnish drivers fail to do sometimes.

Wow! Another long day. 570km round trip today, from Auckland to the stages and back. I'm knackered!
Managed to see the first 4 stages quite easily. Leaving SS1 after the Munchis and arriving at SS2 with a few minutes to spare. Same goes for SS3 & 4.
Man, it was cold at SS1 this morning (I can now hear the Norwegians, Swedes and Finns saying 'you don't what cold is'), but honestly I can't remember a Rally NZ stage that cold ever. And I have been to a lot over the years. Basically it the wind chill factor that made it so so cold.
Looking at the roads, they didn't seemed to be cutting up too badly, but not exactly swept either. It was almost a combo of both at various spots. There was muddy chopped up places, especially at the apexes of some chambered corners, but also smooth swept lines on other parts.
Highlight of the day was Mason's amazing recovery on SS4. It was on a fast long left hander around 150 - 200m. In the middle was a farmers driveway with a culvert. Everyone seemed to edge it a little, but Mason must have dropped a wheel into it. The next moment his car was sideways in the air about 300mm off the ground. It landed basically perpendicular to the road. Somehow he straightened it up and without any loss of momentum roared away as if nothing had happened. To me it looked as if it was about to roll. It got the crowd excited.
Didn't bother with SS5 at Mystery Creek. All in all a great day, although a bit too much driving.

This Loeb's discussion it's funny. I guess no one here knows him. My opinion is that he is a great guy, despite all his achievements he seams to be humble. statistics could well prove he is the best rally driver Ever, but you can find some praise to other drivers in most of his interviews.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say, I spoke with Ken Block again today. Really friendly guy.
It was at the start of SS2, he was out of the car milling about, killing time, before it was his turn to check into control. I asked him about his plans regarding the PWRC for 2008. He said he wasn't ready yet, as he was still learning to drive with pace notes. In the US they drive with route books only. He said he was planning to come back here next year and do more rounds of the NZRC, plus some rounds of the Canadian RC. He's looking at 2009 for a start in the PWRC.
Now here's the good bit... he basically confirmed that Travis Prastana is doing the PWRC in 2008. That should bring a smile to our US of A forumers.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say, I spoke with Ken Block again today. Really friendly guy.
Yeah. At least superficially. Reading the silly comments about how Loeb is "arrogant" I can't help think of Block's comments on the US rallyforum Specialstage.com where many expericed people were discussing just what sort of value if any the recent made-for-TV so called reality show the X-games will do for the perennially small-time status that Rally in USA suffers from.
I asked him about his plans regarding the PWRC for 2008. He said he wasn't ready yet, as he was still learning to drive with pace notes. In the US they drive with route books only.
Something is fishy here. If he actually said that, and I have no reason to doubt that you heard correctly, then something is badly amiss
US events in the old SCCA Championship and the current two private corpoations having "Championships" and most local events have been done using the Swedish "Jemba" note system for at least the last 7 years, and some events have introduced 1 or even 2 pass recce in the last couple of years--(which makes me shake my head as I can't see why 98.5% need Jemba notes when they drive so painfully slow)
.
So Block has been using "Notes" since the first event he entered.
So maybe you heard wrong.
Or maybe Block was simply lying and scrambling to make excuses for his cracking under pressure and rolling on the first or second stage of nearly every foreign event he's started: Mexico, NZ Championship earlier this year, and now this event.
Sorta makes you wonder about the friendly thing, friendly yeah but is he trustworthy? Honest? Can he stop the hype for a second?
I prefer Loebs behaviour, and what I see there is he's simply shy because of his bad English. Seems animated, friendly and engaging in French.
.
He said he was planning to come back here next year and do more rounds of the NZRC, plus some rounds of the Canadian RC. He's looking at 2009 for a start in the PWRC.
I really fail to see why he bothers.
If he wanted to prove something then I think he should rent a car and do some Group F events in Finland.
But I have a strong suspicion that he would have results more or less here he was most of yesterday if he didn't have a works spec car.
Now here's the good bit... he basically confirmed that Travis Prastana is doing the PWRC in 2008. That should bring a smile to our US of A forumers.
Well there I can say OK, good for him, he's proven in his previous life as a top level US National series moto-cross guy that he knows how to drive, knows what his job is. He's devoted his life since he was a teenager to motorsports and makes an excellent contrast to his team-mate.
The downside is that then we will have to endure more air-headed wannabe's all say "Wow golly! Pastrana in the WRC proves the USA has finally arrived on the world scene!!!! Yeaaaah!!!!!"
When seriously, probably 2/3 of the cars at any GroupF or Swedish GruppH event would beat all the cars here in North America.
It's bad enough seeing people say the sport in North America is doing anything, when the only real thing that has changed is the amount of on-line hype.

Well Tomi, I push strongly for people to look at and study what is going on in GpF to the guys I help build cars and get started, and lots of them do. Many US and Canadian rally people now know what a bunch of lunatics your country is full of, and what hard competition looks like thanks to all the Videos and You-tube.
but as to why people don't come to Finland to rent a car, for they guys I deal with in my business, its just cost, they're building cars here they're younger so they're not independently wealthy and they're worried about getting dragged away into the woods by platoons of cute Finnish girls who will rob them of the honor (so many have married too soon, so they don't want anything naughty happening---and they know they couldn't resist)
And those guys who can afford the cost and time can also afford to just buy a essentially works spec car and do events where they can be certain of a high result and brag about that.
I say that tendency---going for the easy result by buying ultimate equipment--a real honest top God American character trait--- and not seeking out the hardest competition you know---is why American rally as a whole will always be at best "B license" level.
I say its no surprise that there always seem to be another squad of Finns ready to keep the record of winning 50% or more of WRC events since the series exsisted just because there is such hard and dep fields that they learn the craft in.

I was disappointed with the ammount of people there.
Everyone was either at the Ford or Subaru area. There were maybe 5 people who even looked at Stolh car :(
But its kind of sad, there were extreamly few people for Citroen maybe 1/4 of the people that were either at subaru or ford. Loeb is the most dominant rally driver in history... And no one cares?
There were more people at munchies ford than at citroen. Is it like this everywhere? :(
Hello to everyone.

I think group F is a good way to start rallying, driving that 1-2 years you see if there is any talent, if there is no idea to try to reach to international level, then it can be a nice hobby anyway, it would be good if you could start something simular there too, here its normal that in events is more than 100 cars in the entry, nice fun to watch too even that everyone is not so good driver.

Just a quick comment on Loeb. On his recent visit to Ireland I could see the hassle and pressure he had at every service. Literally hundreds of fans wanting to see his face, more flash bulbs than a 70s disco. Kids and adults forcing pens and paper in his face. Sure this is the price of fame but it can't be easy. Met him again at a re-group at the start of a stage away from the crowds and he was much more friendly.
Later on in the day passing parc ferme he saw our car and pointed to the door. Me thinks - Seb wants a lift, shall I let him in? Only joking.....
Anyway he gets in the our car and waits for Daniel to come and we give him a lift back to his hotel. Maybe 10 min drive. But he said it is extremley hard work to be a fan's friend every minute of the day but he does his best. Away from the fans and the paparazzi he is a good bloke and very down to earth. He's a nice guy, and Daniel too. And I guess being so far from home in NZ with his wife expecting it can't be easy.

Regarding the lack of fans gathered around Citroen compared to Subaru and Ford, I reckon it may be because of the following or combination of:-
a) Frequelin has said on many times he doesn't think NZ should be in the WRC as it is of no interest marketing wise to Citroen for selling cars.
b) France and NZ have a "history at rugby" - NZ's national sport.
c) French secret service carried out operations in NZ in the mid 1980's against anti nuclear protestors who were against French nuclear tests in the islands in the south Pacific. Actually if what the French did in Auckland harbour today was between say Iran and US we would have missiles flying by now.
I think Seb is a superb driver and an OK guy, just his and Citreoen presence is not as popular as Ford & Nordic drivers with the locals.

I think you poeople think too much!
The average Kiwi rally fan wouldn't remember the Rainbow Warrior bombing, wouldn't have heard of Guy Frequelin & the only 'rugby history' we have with France is snotting them on a regular basis.
If there's more people at the Subaru & Ford tents than Citroen it's simply because Subaru has a huge following in this country (no small thanks to Possum Bourne), Petter is a showman, Chris is the nearest thing we have to a local in the WRC, and Marcus is the exciting act at the moment.
Contrast that with Citroen's almost non existent market share, it's image as a boring and ugly car for old fuddy duddies, and it's slightly reclusive world champion.

I'm sorry but Martin sure wasn't at the level of these guys.
It´s his first season and he has done very good job until now. Hope they will find some extra speed for today´s stages.
