The gravel stages have been reversed, Terra Alta for the first time, whereas the other two gravel stages are now same as 2014. Meanwhile the tarmac stages are almost identical to last year with just one Sunday stage dropped and one reversed. This way, the gravel percentage is higher than ever before at 44%. Also, they have brought back the Barcelona super special to join in the battle for the worst super special of the season with Germany, Turkey and Wales.

hmm, maybe it changed between RG1 and RG2? Thanks for noticing, I need to fix that.
EDIT: Yes, checked an older itinerary version and indeed the original plan was to start with La Fatarella aka Terra Alta. It's common problem for my blog that often RG2 and/or final itinerary / road book is released just weeks before the rally, when my route preview should already be published. Germany also changed over something in the Sunday stages.

In two weeks the Rally of Spain Catalonia will take place and there will be important improvements for Hyundai. The team of Michel Nandan will use one of its development jokers to release a new suspension and central differential. These developments will be crucial for Thierry Neuville, who will have to face a demanding first day in which he will open the way during the stage on the ground. The championship leader had suffered a lot of understeer in Wales and that was the area to solve for Spain.
"We did not get the results we expected at the last rally, which was not conducive to our title ambitions," said Nandan in the German medium Rallye Magazin. The director of Hyundai Motorsport expects his team to make the most of these new improvements. "Now we only have two more events to fight, especially in the manufacturers' championship. We know it will not be easy. We will have to do everything in our power to win. "
The truth is that the date of Wales was a real headache for Neuville. Already from the first section on Friday the Belgian had reported a marked tendency to understeer. According to the leader of the championship, the vehicle did not respond correctly to correct its lines on the road and suffered from serious problems to find a good level of grip. In fact, the Hyundai driver was forced to make a complete change of springs and suspension springs during the service park that day.
With this change, the car improved slightly, although it maintained other inconveniences in the hardness of the suspension. The problem affected him on Saturday, as he had to battle to find a good level of stability in the Hyundai i20 WRC. The real and concrete is that this sum of altercations made him lose seconds repeatedly. Therefore, Neuville was unable to fight for the victory, especially since he ended up stuck for a few seconds after an exit from the road.
In order to correct all these disadvantages, Hyundai invested a development joker that allowed them to obtain improvements in the central differential and the suspension geometry of the front axle. This should help solve the instability and the understeer trend that was continuously reported in the previous Wales date.
The Rally of Catalonia will again be a difficult mission for the championship leader, since it will have to sweep the roads when opening the route in the first stage of the land. While this will mean a loss of time, the Belgian will have the opportunity to move to the first starting places when the start order is reversed for the two days on asphalt. The cleanliness and speed of these roads could bring an advantage to the Hyundai driver, who would be able to compensate for Friday's limitations.
For now, the South Korean brand is testing throughout this week in Spain. Andreas Mikkelsen was the first to turn on asphalt roads. After the Norwegian, it will be the turn of Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo.

Not really sure who got this messed up.
Hyundais understeer issues are on tarmac and have been there since Spain last year. The joker changes mentioned were planned for since before Germany. Yet this sounds like it's all about Wales gravel. If that was the case it would be pretty epic for Hyundai to develop and have ready suspension changes 2 days after GB ended.

Are the Peugeot Cup cars only "national" entries to this rally, or is there some historic cars driving this year? I remember few years ago that there were some historic cars driving too (not normal rally, but as some show driving), some of those drive fast and some of those just driving sunday drive through stages :)

18th October 2018, 20:31
Faith in Loeb or faith in Citroen...?
Yes.
Loeb's gotten older and doesn't compete regularly and Citroen's had a few terrible seasons.
Let's see how Ogier and company fare next year before passing any judgement on the maker. Loeb's a legend already and expecting him to keep coming back and winning isn't realistic. Not even Muhammad Ali could do it forever. Ogier winning a championship with a third manufacturer will be a huge boost to his own legacy even if he doesn't equal Loeb's title count.

18th October 2018, 20:53
With the speed Loeb has shown in both Mexico and Corsica he is a clear top 3 favorite. Specially with the road position advantage.
er88
18th October 2018, 22:12
People will be overlooking Loeb because of rust due to not competing regularly, the fact he's made mistakes in Mexico and Corsica trying to keep up with the pace/get the best out the c3, and the fact the pace at the top of the championship battle is incredible.
I still think he's got a great chance though.
Rallyper
19th October 2018, 08:33
The fact is, Loeb has competeted in WRX and that should be the formula for speed, imho.
Probably that is also for Petter.
But having said that, it is hard competition out there.

Wish I was spectating this event. The chance to see a title fight between Tanak, Neuville and Ogier - with Loeb, Solberg, Block on the entry list. Great line-up.
All hinges on the weather, if it's dry watch Loeb be right up there on day 1 going into two days or tarmac in the car that won last year.

Close to the stages it can get busy, but usually no traffic jams. You might have to walk a bit if you go to easy reachable spots, but overall not too bad.

Finally the rallying week starts today with the guys starting their recce! Man im so so excited.
Im expecting a great event with a massive battle between Tänak, Ogier and Loeb, all those guys really like this event and i think i dont have to say that Loeb has won it 8 times and Ogier 3 times. Plus Loeb has a very good starting position for friday and Ott has no other option than to win the last two rallies.
Neuville fans dont hate me now, dont get me wrong, im not doubting Thierrys skills but we all know that the Hyundai is crap on tarmac this season. Although when i looked at last years Day2 results and you take away his 30 sec penalty he was as fast as Ogier and Tänak. Latvala is also on great form recently and the Toyota is good on these fast gravel and tarmac roads.

The way manu points work now he actually can get points every now and then, even in 20th place 15 mins behind.
More specific this season he collected 10 manu points, 4 in Argentina and 6 in Turkey.

Can somebody present at Salou take a picture of Kopecky´s car, please? Is the livery somehow special? Because it may be and IMO it should be. "Being able to win the WRC title at the end of this rally, it's a pretty good situation, it does not take a lot of pressure off me, but it does put some in Ogier and Tanak, but it's almost safe. that the championship is going to be played in Australia, I'm trying not to put pressure on myself, but there is still an issue, even if I'm in a comfort zone given my three-year extension with Hyundai. Now, a kid's dream can come true! We'll be there soon ... ", smiled the Belgian at our microphone.
"We will have to do a perfect rally, if we want to be more comfortable in Australia, we will have to increase our lead a little bit.If the gap remains the same or almost, we can be satisfied because the rally looks difficult for us. We will open the road on the ground the first day.The goal is to recover some points on Ogier, who will take more risk than us.The tests went well, it will have to adapt quickly to New settings of the car The team has worked well, the motivation is present. The top 3 of the event I will say Mikkelsen, Neuville and Ogier, "then concluded Neuville.

Dosn't matter at all, but he did beat Kopecky on Germany SSS also and only lost to Ott :)

Ogier took his place with great run and genius set-up. Rovanperä and Kopecky did pretty well by beating several WRCs.

"It's nice to come back on a WRC rally, I do not drive cars like this every day, I know there's waiting around me, even if that's not what I prefer it because it is not easy to return six years later, we will try to do this at best, I tried to recover old notes of 2009. They were not brilliant, I was obliged to take them back, "smiled the Frenchman, who has lost none of his analysis of the race. "If it's dry on Friday, I should have a good position on the road, maybe it's going to be a good fit for me, and if the rain comes Saturday and then it's dry again on Sunday, that means every day would be different, so getting back into the rhythm might not be the easiest for me ... we'll see ... "
The former world champion naturally has an opinion on the future world champion. "We have three riders fighting at the front, they are sharp, I would be happy to get involved in the fight with the three of them, they have all the qualities, Ogier does not have the best car, but he is still there, Tanak has had some incredible races at the end of the season, Neuville was earlier in the season, it's hard to say which one deserves the title, they have to run free, but they are likely to make a mistake. losing everything Mentally, it's not easy, "he explained.
Finally, a word about his future, which has become very vague following the decision of Peugeot in Rallycross: "My future? I do not know anything at all.We had not asked the question. The WRX was my main program, it will not be any more, at least not with Peugeot, I have not had time to think about it yet. "

Well that’s put a mark in the sand! If this is a tight contest that big advantage from an SSS could prove crucial (though I don’t expect it to be close ;))

maybe more crucial, can be his less available tyres,(depending weather of course)
Ogier Sébastien - Ingrassia Julien

Ref. Ogier, he could have worn down the tires out on purpose before the stage that way he goes into the SD on soft tires with close to no thread (=slicks). That would certainly be an advantage (Sordo had this in Portugal on friday).
Other than that on these stages more rubber gets put on the track for later runners as well.

Maybe they should put some work into clearing away some bushes to make for better viewing, too many places to hide and too little space for everyone to see without being tempted to taking risks. I didn't feel lucky after a 3cm rock knocked the sun screen off my LCD screen and just missed my face so tried to stay safe the rest of the day...

Finally got to watch the first stage.
Personally I'd rank it as one of the best SSS of this year, much much better than Turkey, Germany, GB and even the Portugal city stage.
Why:
- relatively wide areas between the tight corners (for example right before the tight hairpin), so drivers can actually position the cars instead of driving on rails and then using handbrake
- low barriers so you can see most of the car most places (germany SSS was terrible at this with the very high haybales)
- fountain/steps background
-------------------
On related note there was really a lot of dust on the road, so road cleaning effect + rubber, surely helped later starters.
