He can't do faster, look at the teammates... then they asked, what is the difference, his answer: only the driver.
To be precise, they asked him "What is different in your car compared to theirs?" and he said "Nothing. The driver." Not very arrogant himself, stupid female journalist forced him say that.

SAT 12:38 - MID-DAY REGROUP: LOEB
"Yeah I'm disappointed with what happened yesterday. That's life, now we have to think about the rest of the rally and forget about yesterday. Even we are not fighting for victory, it is nice to drive cars like this on days like today. "I had a big smile on my face when I finished the first stage, I enjoyed it a lot."
SAT 12:33 - MID-DAY REGROUP: NEUVILLE
"Difficult, challenging, but really enjoyable. I had a good rhythm. I was happy with time, we didn't lose too much to Meeke and managed to build the gap for the afternoon. "Some of the corners were tighter than I thought! We have been on edge all day."
SAT 12:30 - MID-DAY REGROUP: MEEKE
"The first stage was a good stage for me, the other two on the loop were a disaster. I just don't have the same feeling as last year, I'm going to put last year's set-up on the car for the afternoon and see what happens."
SAT 12:29 - MID-DAY REGROUP: LAPPI
"Yeah happy with how it has gone today. Morning loop was very good, but it is easy to do well when you can be confident in the grip of the tyre. "I will not try to deliberately push and catch Tanak, if I push harder it is easier to make a mistake."
dimviii
7th April 2018, 12:53
SAT 12:22 - MID-DAY REGROUP: LATVALA
Latvala complains about his brakes, he's locking his brakes out on the stages and he's going to use service to look for a solution to that problem.
SAT 12:18 - MID-DAY REGROUP: SORDO
Dani Sordo: "I've changed the suspension a bit overnight, I'm trying to push in every stage and the times just aren't there. It is not something wrong in the car, perhaps it is just the wrong set-up." Dani Sordo sounding a bit downbeat at the regroup at Bastia Airport there, he's also not entirely happy with his pacenotes either.
SAT 12:24 - MID-DAY REGROUP: MALCOLM WILSON
[On Phil Mills] "Being a co-driver is a really tough job, it's not easy for Phil and it's not easy for Elfyn either. But they're still here and there's chance for improvement this afternoon."
SAT 12:23 - MID-DAY REGROUP: PHIL MILLS
"The stages are all unique in their own right. All are a big challenge. "It's been working well with Elfyn, we were looking good on SS5 but we went round a hairpin and stalled - if it wasn't for that we would have got a decent time."

Give Mikkelsen this season to make the car suit his way of driving and im 100% he will be at the same pace - and even better than Neuville. 4-5 years with the same car compared to 6 months, thats a BIG difference and thats what we are seeing now.

Eric you are right, almost everybody needs time to adjust/be adjusted to a new car.
The problem is that other drivers react faster.See Tanak? Everything new,he is straggling somehow, but you can see the big potential.
Most stage wins till now.
The other BIG problem, not only for Mikkelsen, but for all the drivers,is that Ogier seems he has setuped perfectly with Fiesta.
He seems that he find the sweet spot at asphalt and gravel.
He had hard times last year to adapt, and Neuville(and not only him) lost his chance.
These chances doesnt happen often for '' win machines'' like Ogier.

Agree with that. Tanak has impressed in the Toyota, although he seems to struggle more now than what I expected after Monte.
Ogier is the best driver today, no doubt about that. I cant see who will be able to push him down from the top.. As you say, last year they had their chance - no one was good enough. I dont think we will see another world champ before he retires.

I think I know what's missing from 2018 Latvala: fearlessness. He had nothing to lose last year and didn't expect to be in the title fight so he was maximum attack always. Now he's got a proper chance and much to lose, too much to keep him calm. He needs to take more risks, even if it ends in disaster like today.

I was never totally convinced with him in wrc2 (as in having potential to be a future champion), but when you factor in how much less experience he has compared to all the other guys in top machinery it shows you he really does have an abundance of potential/quality

Neuville through the final stage now in an 11m10.3s - 3.2sec slower than Tanak & Lappi. "I have nothing to say! I try, I try, I try! If we continue like this we will also be off the road." Neuville sounds exasperated after SS10.

Is anyone honestly surprised Meeke mishears pacenotes or loses track? I can't follow his notes on on-boards as they are crammed with info and rattled off at a million miles an hour.
That's not a criticism of Nagle btw, if Kris didn't like how things were going he'd alter the notes or have changed his trusted co driver long before now. It's almost information overload in his notes

The Citroen team believes Meeke was two gears too high into the corner. He was in fifth when he should have been in third. A misheard pacenote is to blame.

Loeb, Meeke (even if he rejoins in 8th) and maybe even Mikkelsen could all drive the long stage slowly to save tires for PS. Maybe even on softs? Question is if any of them will.

Some detailed info from Meeke:
https://www.facebook.com/krismeeke
"Hi everyone,
You’ll know by now, probably, that our fight for a podium place on the Tour de Corse ended in disappointment this afternoon - in the same stage, wouldn’t you know, that accounted for our hopes last year as well, albeit in a very different fashion.
We started well this morning with a good time on the first test of the day, and then on the two stages that made up the rest of the Saturday loop, we were a bit off the pace. I was struggling to work out why, to be honest, because we were certainly trying hard enough and the rhythm had felt good too.
Then at lunchtime service we made some changes to the set-up - taking the car closer to how it was 12 months ago, in a way. But in the repeat run through the longer of the three stages, I touched a kerb and I thought I had a puncture, so we weren’t as quick as we could have been. Then on the penultimate stage of the day, our time was a bit better again and we were able to draw level with Thierry Neuville in second place.
Things went wrong for us in the final stage of the day, though. We had to wait for a long time beside the car because there are so many cars in the rally that it was ages before recovery could get to us. I was confused about what happened and we didn’t want to give out any incorrect information.
But we’ve had a chance now to look at onboard footage and it seems that Paul got a bit mixed up in the notes. He called a ‘fast five left’ when it should have been a ‘three’, so I was all guns blazing into a tighter corner than we’d expected. You can’t change the laws of physics so we ended up a fair way off the road, down a bit of a hillside. It was an interesting moment, for sure.
This is the first time that Paul has ever made a mistake like this. He’s gutted, of course.
I want to be absolutely clear on this, though: Paul and I win together and we lose together. We have enjoyed many successes over the years, and his ability to fire out pacenotes in great detail has played a key part in that. He has sat with me many, many times when I’ve been the one to make a mistake, and the consequences have been a lot worse than they were today. So we will both take it on the chin, move on and go again - it is as simple as that. We are a team.
We may get a chance to get right back into it tomorrow morning, as it turns out. The car’s not too badly damaged and as long as they manage to get it back up the mountainside in one piece, I’d be reasonably hopeful that we can get back out for the Sunday stages. Keep your fingers crossed.
Thank you, as always, for your support,
Kris"

The note seems for the previous corner, Nagle did called 3 left-
mknight
7th April 2018, 22:28
Yeah he repeated the previous note once, before saying the correct one but then they were already in the breaking. Sometimes he does repeat the previous note one more time also on other occasions. But here Meeke could have though that it's the note for next corner.
That said note just how many notes there are for 2 "simple" corners. It's a bit like when Solberg spun in Wales once cause Patterson just couldn't keep up with the notes.
Sure it's the co-driver who makes the error. But extremely detailed notes put extra pressure on him.
stefanvv
7th April 2018, 22:35
May be it's just an error in the pace notes, I'm not that expert, but shouldn't be "5 left fast INTO 3 left-" be more proper?!?
Also turning the page in that fast section to short slower one is a risk to call the note bit too late?!?
Just saw the onboard from Kris, the co driver said 3 left minus. The speed was obviously not for 3 left minus.Really big shame.

I hate blame games. If it's been acknowledged between them that Paul made an error on their usual pattern, so be it. No co driver is ever faultless 100% of the time. Meeke has made plenty of mistakes through his driver errors so it's nice to see them being manly enough to get a silly error out of their system.
Just as I said when Loeb retired though, it just reflects badly on Citroen that they couldn't even afford a 3rd car on their home rally for the manufacturers pts...
