Which one is the easiest way to compare that new route to 2017's route? How much there will be new roads?

Just by looking at the names, lengths and places on the map:

Bayons - Breziers and Saint-Léger-les-Mélèzes - La Bâtie-Neuve are about the same as last year.
La Bollène-Vésubie - Peïra Cava is shortened a bit. Lardier-et-Valença - Oze is shortened to start from Vitrolles. Agnières-en-Dévoluy - Le Motty is stretched to Corps.
Thoard - Sisteron, Roussieux – Eygalayes, Vaumeilh – Claret and La Cabanette – Col de Braus are new (from 2016).

Beginning to study the MonteCarlo route!!

I would like to visit the Roussieux-Eygalayes stage....for me, one of the special stages that probably not has been run in this version.

It seems that Laborel has to be crossed, and runs trough Col St. Jean, always spectacular, more depending the meteo, if we remember the 2009 edition with a lot of snow in the Col.

Here I post our video, to remember the last edition!

MonteCarlo it's coming!!!!

Really hoping Citroen can find enough self respect to run 3 cars next year. Ford third car and privateers is the only bit of intrigue left now really.

Ford third car and privateers is the only bit of intrigue left now really.Would not surprise me to see Meeke and Breen in a 2 car team for some rounds. The sheikh/Loeb and maybe Lefebrve running in a 3rd car on the least costly events. Lefebrve in the r5 for a lot of wrc2.

Kalle Rovanperä with TGS Skoda Fabia R5, since the factory team is skipping the event. It's sure weird that we still don't know the third drivers of those factory teams.

Well with Citroen I'm pretty sure it will be Meeke (since he's the teamleader), Breen (he did exceptionally well last year with the '16 spec DS3) and Lefebvre (it is supposed to be one of his stronger rounds).

For M-Sport the third car will be either Camilli or Suninen, probably Camilli because again it is one of his stronger rounds. I mean if Tidemand or someone else was in the mix I guess we would have heard a noise or two by now.

Elementary dear Watson, but Tidemand already announced his Skoda contract, and with Østberg's announcement of going to WRC2 it seems it cannot be anyone else than those two for M-Sport. For Citroen, we don't know yet if they are running two or three cars from the main team but Meeke and Breen truly seem confirmed, having been testing.

I can`t think of a reason, why Škoda wouldn`t allow Tidemand participate in a WRC car with M-sport on those rallys they don`t take part of. Especially with these rumours about Škoda WRC in near future, experience is needed. The biggest issue would probably be that M-Sport wants money, Tidemand and his manager aren`t paying customers.

Also, Ostberg is still working for a competitive WRC in an official team and WRC2 is still just an option.

All I know that Esapekka Lappi wasn't allowed to test the Toyota Yaris WRC when he was driving for Skoda (or at least that's what they officially said). https://www.mtv.fi/sport/ralli/uutinen/artikkeli/tommi-makinen-vakuuttui-15-vuotiaan-suomalaislupauksen-wrc-testista-hyva-ote-autoon/6019398#gs.Z=ZtrR4 (in Finnish, at the very end of the article)

After two years in a row I will watch this from home. Will miss the thick air of the early morning af the french alps, the fans fires near the stage and the halo of history you can feel in those streets.

I will not miss the cold and the early morning alarm clock though :D

Curious to see Tanak in the new car, Ogier motivations after a strange silly season and how Neuville will start the new season.
Also curious about young guns Rovanpera driving in this rally (he will participate right?), Huttunen (is he in the list as well?) and I hope Suninen will join Fiestas for the whole season or a large part of it.

Can't wait the new season to start.

Newbie question: Let's say a stage or two in Monte has big snow. Can the teams elect to run the gravel/snow spec tire/wheel, or does Michelin mandate the tarmac spec size? I was watching some testing video from Monte, and my mind started to race....

Mirek
23rd December 2017, 07:30
That's not Michelin requirement but the tyre size is strictly set in supplementary regulations of the event. Usually they allow narrow tyres for small cars but not for 4WD. The reason is partially in Monte Carlo being declared as asphalt event, i.e. with asphalt brakes and asphalt suspension package. For using small snow wheels You need to change a lot of other things on the car (for example asphalt brake discs can't fit into them).

In times of IRC it was still allowed to cut the wide tyres extensively and in those times in case of big snow they for example completely removed the middle stripe of rubber blocks from the tyre and every second block from side stripes. The tyres looked almost like for tractor - like on these pictures:

in the IRC they could also use snow tyres and studded tyres.

The rules for 4WD were nearly same as today. Wide 18" tyres with certain amount of studs (short ones) allowed. The difference was in allowed cutting and in number of tyres but the basic wide snow tyre design today is same as in IRC times.

So, Michelin would provide snow tires/studs in the asphalt spec size I assume?

Yes, just not only Michelin.

Rumours about Bouffier in 3rd M-Sport car. Comeback to specialists days?Pleeeease let the specialist days come back! I loved the diversity of having Rovanperä on one rally and Panizzi on the next.

I will ask though, who was Peugeot's tarmac specialist in 2004? I know that Panizzi was with them during the 206 days, but in 2004 he did some outings with the shitty Lancer. Was it Freddy Loix, or did he also share events with others like Cedric Robert?

Maybe you have to look to the archives to see what he did... ;) He actually finished 2nd in his first WRC event with a 4WD car, and after that did more podiums with Toyota. Freddy is a driver with a lot of technical knowledge (that's why Skoda worked with him for the development of the Fabia S2000 and R5, or why he is still doing the testing-work for Michelin to develop their tires). But I think he can't perform well when not everything is to his liking, which was the case at Mitsubishi and Peugeot with the whale. Going to Mitsubishi was the biggest mistake in his career. Saying "he did nothing" is completely wrong, dimviii. ;)

He did already 4WD WRC events in 1996. He didn't finish 2nd until in Portugal 1997 where almost all works drivers retired. Two podiums in 1998 with good performances, but after that, lots of crashing and being off the pace.

This year Citroen and Toyota started the season with only two 2017 cars.

But it's true that without DMack money M-Sport can't afford a regular third car like this year.

Tarmop
26th December 2017, 13:03
Well, money wasn`t the issue, number of cars was the question (ok you can say that Toyota had a learning year and they spent as much as they had to but not more...like also in the end) and Citroen was still there with one DS3, apart from rallys in S.-America.

If M-Sport will hire Bryan, he will definitely not bring enough money to satisfy their budget...

If it's Jerome Degout then he has a quite good and experienced co driver next to him.

br21
28th December 2017, 08:50
Theoretically if you don't go as Priority 2 driver (so non WRC2 entry) and FIA will not nominate you then you have much more freedom with tires, so maybe that is also one of the reasons of Rovanpera and Veiby decisions? As we all know tires on Monte might be crucial.
If Bouffier will drive with Degandt then for sure that is very good and experienced codriver. And Bryan has a lot of knowledge about the roads, conditions, etc so he can use as his big advantage over the guys who know their cars better than him.

RS

I am planning to go to Monte this year. Does anyone have experience on Col de Moissiere? This year it is ZP 6 on SS 10/12 (St. Leger les Melezes - La Batie Neuve). Is the spot reachable only by skis and how is it for spectating? I have been two times in Monte, but always on dry spots and this time I really would like to spectate on snowy conditions. Any other suggestions for Saturday are also appreciated. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure you can go to Col de Moissere using a chairlift from Ancelle and the ticket was around 8-10 euro one way. And you have to go back walking if I'm not mistaken. On this same stage there's a nice spot at Ancelle called camping Taillas where Meeke has had a little moment in 2016 and some 300 - 400 meters after the camping there's a slipery uphill hairpin with a nice view of the coming cars.

when even the 4x4 cars have trouble getting up the hill, there is just no point in sending all the 2wd cars in there.

Melichárek had broken gearbox (stuck 3rd gear) and unfortunately he was first one on the road to plough the fresh snow. That was really unfortunate coincidence which led to the cancelation of the stage by him being stuck on the road...

You're giving too much credit to the people who put together the entry lists I think.

WRC2 always makes me smile on the Monte. So many drivers giving it respect and not registering. When in reality you just need to not write your car off and you'll probably get a good points haul.

Taking Monte Carlo as a championship event is always a bit of gamble. For sure it's prestigious to win it but it's also an event with higher risk of something unpredictable happening than others. If your goal is to win the title at all cost you don't choose Monte Carlo.

Still disappointed and (a bit) amazed Citroën don't have a third car for example Lefebvre here in rally Monte Carlo. He could be in the game for sure, not for the win but a top five spot was possible so be a good third nominated driver and you need one here because always something happen as MC is a special event with the tricky mixed-conditions.
Specially now whe know Ostbeg will have a third car for Sweden so that third car is (still) available. Also no Bonato, so for sure now no win for Citroën in the R5 class but i guess they don't care about that.

Ans missing in the entry-list some fast French drivers like Michel, Maurin, Rossel and Margaillan.

Had btw also some hoped Hänninen could be with Dmack but that ain't happen but was a good opportunity (for both), maybe that will be happen later on in the season, you never know.

But in the end, 11 strong drivers in the top-class and 6-7 strong drivers in the R5 class so it will be a exited MC-event anyway.

Hello Bluuford, do you have any predictions for the weather next week in Monte? I trust your forecasts better than any other.:)

Can tell you only in very general (not to reveal any secrets ;)).

Looks like heavy snofall in almost all elevations over the weekend, totalling 40 cm of fresh snow in higher sections. So, try to avoid Saturday for recceing stages. Precipitation ends with some rain everywhere on Sunday and some rain on Monday as well.

Then comes very warm period that basically should melt most of the snow from all the roads but snow should stay on the side of the road in higher stages.

SD likely nice and warm,

Thursday night close to zero, especially Sisteron,

Overnight rain on Friday stages and during morning loop, likely rain, very little chanche of snow (snow only on Saturday stages).

Saturday is likely nice weather and stage 9-10 might have some snow from overnight and previous day

Sunday, if everything stays the same, then no minus degrees for Col de Turini stages. But still very far to call.

Likelyhood of warmer weather is higher than likelyhood of colder weather.

PS! If you are used to cooler weather and +10 is Ok for you then you might need shorts for SD :P

PS2! You should find me from SP during rally and in the region from Sunday evening:)

In fact it might be better in some ways if we don't have Jon yapping on non stop like he feels he needs to for the tv stages. And i also don't mind if there's barely any stageside cameras as I like on boards the most. Sure they'll have the helicopter out for a lot of the stages too

er88
22nd January 2018, 12:29
I am afraid yes...A lot of the stuff added for tv production standards is not needed anyway. Like laughable driver interviews before each driver enters the stage, with questions like what they had for breakfast and if they're friends with their co driver etc etc. And stupid commentators that think it's all about them so they talk over everything, and strung out stage end interviews that mean you miss a lot of action from the other cars on the stage.

So if they're stripping the production back, it could end up being better for a lot of people instead of trying to dumb it down and cater for the "casual tv viewer", who probably isn't watching the usual one or two live stages anyway

Already if they just have some onboard images, maybe sometimes helicopter shots and / or a stationary camera on the stage. Maybe between the stages some studio-like content and images from servicepark it will be a HUGE improvement of the Live-Experience than sitting in front of result screens and listen to a radio. Give them time and judge after the event. I'm quite optimstic.

Regarding the weather. I hope bluuford will approve: There will be high temperatures during this week nearly everywhere. So the snow will melt a lot. Then there will be rain during friday morning and it could freeze during FRI-SAT night especially in mountains and forests so I assume there would be ice above 1000m but I don´t expect snow. Or very thin layer of snow and only on the top of the hills. And on Sunday snow and ice will melt slowly again because of high temperatures.

It seems to rain quite a lot, so there could be very snowy at high places like stage 10/12 on Saturday: https://www.yr.no/sted/Frankrike/Provence-Alpes-Côte_d’Azur/Ancelle/langtidsvarsel.html

What I hated most last year was messing live feed with studio useless talk. Gaps were made to 4 minutes just to be filled with that crap. Cut this and all the waiting for driver to remove his helmet at the end of the stage and you get 2 minutes action from every crew. Thus the high rhythm remains constant for the spectator and he watches all the show instead of doing something else around.
