Still a lot of work to do for Hyundai until Homologation. Not very impressive. Lacks on power and torque compared to Skodas.

Very strange conditions. Some thunderstorm this morning in the whole region, so plenty of water/mud on the stages. Now it's dry and over 25°C, so parts will dry up, but how fast and will it stay dry? We need bluuford... :D

Bit at the end says Tanak has a hand injury and they originally stated there was an issue with the car. He was just testing a couple of days ago so I'm inclined to say that's a bit of BS info?

Taken out of context that could sound quite arrogant - but I don't think it was meant that way. Just emphasizing the different development times. Let's see how the results compare over the next 12 months.

Problem is, what is the solution? It has to offer something different from the WRC, and the various national series.

You're telling that like if Ypres was Condroz. It's not. There are several muddy corners on the shakedown, so what? In last five years there was a lot more completely dry stages in Ypres than wet ones and normally there isn't more dirt on them then what You can find in WRC Germany.

Back from a very nice and interesting QS/shakedown. With the shakedown of 2012 in the back of my mind, my spot was chosen without much of a doubt. :) Lukyanuk and Abbring were very spectacular to see. Seen some very impressive high speed drifts in which they showed total control of the car, something you couldn't say of many other drivers. Loix and Bouffier were driving more preserved/clean, it wasn't exciting to see but for sure efficient, as the times prove us. In R2, as always, the Adam R2 is very interesting to watch, the chassis is amazing, it can take a lot... I'll try to post a few pics from shakedown tomorrow morning.
I did recce of most of the stages today and yesterday. Some places are quite dry, some are wet/muddy, a lot of variety. It will be difficult to estimate where the water will be, it's mostly determined by the height of the farmland in relationship to the roads, but that's something difficult for drivers to count with. I'm quite surprised there's still no bulletin declaring that handcutting will be allowed (if they will allow it)...
See what I meant about Tanak testing DMack tarmac tyres here... didnt seem any point to me with all the cutting and muck on the asphalt.
Yes, no point at all... There's no mud in a wet Rallye Deutschland, Tour de Corse, Rzeszowski, Barum, Valais etc. etc. ;) Not even talking about the many national events where mud comes in the game, also events with mixed surface (for example I remember an event in Austria with some gravel parts but not enough to go full gravel set-up). It's crucial for a tyre manufacturer in rallying to have something that copes well with wet and muddy conditions, if they can't they should go to circuit racing...

Maybe DMack wasn't confident about their tyres, and was afraid they would do more harm to their reputation than anything else? ;) Snijers used DMack in Sezoens Rally this year. He kicked them off and mounted Michelin on the first service already. ;)

Erm, no it hasn't. Quite the opposite. A tank of fuel now costs 10% more than it did yesterday thanks to those morons. I have €80 left that are going up in value as I look at them.

Stéphane Lefebvre @SLefebvreRallye
We lost 10s in the SS5 because of a stuck handbrake in a junction, but we’re still 6th overall, it’s ok. #FIAERC #YpresRally
Stéphane Lefebvre has fought back to fifth place on the Kenotek Ypres Rally during the opening day of the FIA European Rally Championship classic.
Lefebvre lost around 20 seconds to a technical problem on the first stage of the event, leaving him 19th overall, but he set fastest times on stages two and four. He lost 11 seconds to leader Bryan Bouffier when he spun and stalled on SS5, and although he complained of having to pass two cars on SS6 – as a result of running way down the start order having missed the Qualifying Stage – he climbed into fifth above Bernd Casier.
He was then second fastest on the final stage of the day, level with Freddy Loix and 2.1 seconds behind Vincent Verschueren, who notched up his second win of the day. He finishes the day 31.8s behind the leader Bryan Bouffier, who was just a tenth slower than Loix and therefore has a 6.9s margin.

Maybe DMack wasn't confident about their tyres, and was afraid they would do more harm to their reputation than anything else? ;) Snijers used DMack in Sezoens Rally this year. He kicked them off and mounted Michelin on the first service already. ;)
a bit off topic.
I was just wondering that this "car problem" might be a bit different. maybe they didnt had test car for other days to test for Poland and that was their car problem. Polish test was partly overlapping with Ypres recce. So, that was a "car problem?" There are 6 Fiesta WRC-s in Poland, Camilli, Ostberg, Tänak all had tests, maybe Yazeed, and Bertelli also and there were 9 Fiesta WRC-s in Italy, not long ago, so pretty intense schedule prepare all cars and maintain one testcar for at least four long days;)

No. Where Vouilloz crashed some years ago was on SS Wijtschate (or back then probably named SS Mesen-Sauvegarde). This was on SS Dikkebus-Westouter (formerly part of the old SS Westouter), after the straight where he parked there's the right-left and then the well-known jump. I'm sure you were there at least once, Mirek. ;)
For me personally not a bad day. In terms of spectacle it doesn't look like the best edition. The big difference in comparison to last year is less very fast/spectacular R2 cars. Pitty for Lukyanuk, we saw him earlier on the first stage and he was clearly "on it", and on the same pace as Bouffier. Less international crews, but fortunately the Belgian field is better than ever. Especially Casier and Verschueren surprised me a bit with their pace.

Had Lefebvre as no1 on Pickems, and with material that is enough robust wouldn´t been a problem.

Now 10 seconds penalty for Casier appeared on the event website but it's not yet anywhere else...

What makes you say that?
The comment she said after yesterday's last stage tell a lot:"I am absolutely loving it. Picking up the pace now, listening to the pace notes more."
Hats off for her co-driver, you really need guts to sit there!
her co-driver has no reason to be worried, she drives no faster than reconnaissance speed.
she should have learned to drive a car before competing in the european championship. she's not just slow, it is unbelievably ridiculously slow.
the first time we saw her she never shifted gears, we thought she was stuck in gear. she wasn't.
the second time we saw her she was so slow through the corners we thought she had a serious engine problem, she hadn't.
i've seem a lot of slow rich kids through the years, but never something as embarrassing as this.

Haven't seen any TV-heli either. I think organizers have to pay for it, maybe they considered it not worth it?

So, what is the point in having a series promoter if they don't want to do their job? Because as far as I'm concerned, that is what Eurosport, the promoter should be doing, not the event organiser.
Why did they even bid for the ERC if they only do the bare minimum? I just find it so disappointing.
Yep, the coverage this weekend was disappointing.

He didn't start at the correct time (at 00 in a minute), usually some seconds earlier/later. Only people from timekeeping and people from Hyundai can tell. Anyway I have serious doubts about this car, nothing had to comply with any homologation, so they can use the car they want, in terms of pop-off, restrictor etc they can actually do whatever they want. They say it's an R5, but who will tell? Maybe the 208 T16 Meeke used in Ypres some years ago is faster than the homologated version now... ;) Anyway in terms of chassis/suspension it looks like a very stable car, good base.

Hyundai was in R5 specification, like they plan to homologate it, nothing extra it had. In fact quite soft mapping and still no normal ALS.
Driver was also not pushing hard.
Most of the times they were fastest and with quite big margin. On one stage puncture, on few they caught zero car in front of them so they needed to slow down.
It will be really good R5 car I think. But it's hard to say what exactly made such good times - driver or car...

Yes, Abbring was always really quick on Ypres.
Car looks good though, especially in the chassis.
Engine maybe not so much but as you point out it was running in soft mapping.
I hope Hyundai, or Hyundai importers will run some exciting programmes with some good drivers with this car and it doesn't end up neglected like the PSA cars.

Being firts on the road on such muddy conditions can give you over 1 s/km. It was clearly visible on some spots as well how much dirt he was dragging on the road.

Only on a few special stages there where some muddy/wet places. In the most places the cuts where dry. So 1s/km will be a bit exaggerated i think.

Well i ate a lot off sausages and had a lot of fun :).
On friday we did Dikkebus - Langemark (+ historic cars FIA) and Wijtschate. Place in Langemark was really fast (left 6) Abbring/Princen/Loix/Bouffier/Lefebvre did it flat out. In Wijtschate we stood just before the place where Snijers and Serderidis went in a ditch. Strange and dangerous situation, the stewards said they were not allowed the show a yellow flag to warn the other drivers (??). Even when we tried to slow down the drivers the stewards where cursing and swearing at us.
http://i64.tinypic.com/kee0ph.jpg
Saturday we did Hollebeke 1 - Westouter/Boeschepe 1 - Hollebeke 2 - Kemmel (historic) - Westouter/Boeschepe 2.
On Westouter/Boeschepe we did two places on the french side. Realy nice and fast places, first place was over crest followed by a fast left. Here Lim (the driver who won a tv show and now drives for Hyundai) almost crashed. He held a wrong driving line before and on the crest. The other place on Westouter was a fast section near the finish between fields of hoppe and a local pub :) here it was quite straight, but really a nice atmosphere. Before hollebeke 2 it rained a bit, so the cuts were not completly dry in places. We went to a fast right (4/5) directly followed by a fast left (4/5) Lefebvre and Verschueren really impressive here.

I would like to see Bryan do well too, but I feel he has not quite been the driver he used to be the last couple of years.
And now, after the rally, do you still think Bouffier is not the same driver anymore? He was leading untill SS7 and was second until SS12 where his car let him down. That's quite impressive for a driver after a long break and without much testing, isn't it?

To be fair, I will little bit update your statistics:
round 1 Canarias - 1 Pug at the finish line (Consani), 1 retired (Costenaro, usual problem with alternator)
round 2 Ireland - 0 Pugs at the finish line, 1 retired (Thorburn, technical problem with transmission)
round 3 Acropolis - 0 Pugs at the finish line, 1 retired (Della Casa, broken radiator after hitting stone)
round 4 Azores - 0 Pugs at the finish line, 1 retired (Costenaro, usual problem with alternator)
Wow! This is shocking! I have just realized that both Peugeots 208 T16 (Princen and Snijers), that appeared on the start line, have finished the rally. This is the best result this year:
round 5 Ypres - 2 Pugs at the start line, 2 Pugs at the finish line!
But on the other hand... only 4 out of 8 Citroens DS3 R5 have finished the event.

Strange and dangerous situation, the stewards said they were not allowed the show a yellow flag to warn the other drivers (??).
That's completely correct from them. Yellow flag in rallying has very different meaning than on circuits. It means that the stage is canceled for every crew which is shown the yellow flag and the decision about it is only up to the clerk of the stage. No marshal can decide on his own.
