Somebody was asking what happened to Ogier's car, here is the team statement:

"Six hours after he stopped the engine of his Polo R WRC shortly before the end of Special Stage 2, Sébastien Ogier returned to the service park in Carlos Paz. "The first ten kilometres were perfectly normal," said the World Champion looking back at the morning. "Then the car suddenly lost power and it sounded like it was only running on three cylinders." Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia were initially able to keep going, albeit at a reduced speed.
But the two World Champions' hopes of reaching the finish were dashed. "After about 45 kilometres, the car kept on losing power, then the engine cut out completely." Ogier and Ingrassia used the on-board alarm electronics to try and find the problem. "Unfortunately it didn't work."
The Polo R WRC with car number 9 isn't back in service yet, so the engineers haven't started an in-depth analysis. "If we're lucky, it's only a faulty sensor or a problem with the fuel supply. Then we will probably be able to drive again tomorrow," said Ogier."

Tänak:
It looks like I might be the unluckiest driver in the championship at the moment. From a driver point of view I can't see any way of avoiding what happened to us today. We were in first gear going into a water splash. There was a stone in the water and it ripped the wheel off.

"We have to keep working and try to do as well as we can. Of course it's really difficult after what has happened, but sometimes life is hard. You just have to pull yourself together and keep pushing. It's tough sometimes, but you have to do it. You have to do it for yourself, for your team, and for everyone at home who is supporting you all the way."

The only reason that Ostberg is ahead of Meeke on points is because he is picking up the pieces when drivers ahead of him retire . He is always consistently slower in every rally ,at least Meeke gives it ago - im not saying hes brilliant and he does bin it from time to time .

People are not happy or stating that "crews" are not happy with a tough rally, challenging on drivers and cars and are "blaming" the rally organisers and rally it self...

Completely agree. But that is also the consequence of current technics in WRC cars, they are not made for tough, endurance races. If the calendar had a Rally like Safari, situation should be quite different perhaps.

It is good to have tough rallies in the calender ! (I think Mexico is quite unforgiving as well) It must be the whole season package for the engineers to perform and to win or at least pick up many points as possible. I think there is an acceptable balance now in WRC in gravel, tarmac, snow/ice, cold, hot etc. etc. You can say many things about the FIA/WRC and Mr. Todt but in this case they do an okay job.

im not against harder rallies but this is too much IMO. Half the guys basically using rally2, some just now cruising through the end. i want to see the drivers fighting against each other, not fighting to survive in the rally, this years sweden rally is perfect example what i want.

The breakdowns arise when drivers fail to slow down over the rough stuff either because they forget about it or fail to mark it properly in the notes. They are so used to be just flat out everywhere that for some of them it's really hard to change the habits. And without splits some trigger happy drivers get even more nervous...

I really like this aspect of needing to use the brain and it's nice to have some events which are rough in the calendar.

stefanvv
26th April 2015, 12:08
Exactly. The drivers must be aware what and when could break down in pieces. There isn't better teacher than the really tough events. Colin McRae won Safari with exactly such approach back in the years.

I quote this, since I am one of those who complain. I'm not against tough rallys themselves but not if the result is this. If we don't want to blame organizers then let's blame the FIA that made it impossible for WRC cars to attend such rallies. I don't find it enjoyable a rally where there are only 3 or 4 drivers on sunday (plus other two that are cruising) and everything is mainly due to mechanics issue.
The only good news of this rally is that Meeke is going to win it (I hope).
Mexico was tough but nobody complain because it was hard for drivers but adapted to the cars.

Some of the mechanic failures seem have nothing to do with that the event is tough. Mikkelsen drove with a puncture and pushed his suspension to the limit, Ogier had some mysterious injector problem, and Sordo seem to flooded his spark plugs, Argentina had always water splashes, this is nothing new. Also Tanak might be blamed a bit for his failure.
If we enjoy it or not is another matter. This is how it is, life is hard sometimes. If they were driving on a circuit with smooth asphalt, we would enjoy more close battles. But there are other sports for it.

In Australia last year there was benefit from the cut, in this case the drivers lost time with choosing a different route. But anyway penalties for this are wrong. In my opinion it's up to the organizers to make it impossible to choose different routes.

Tänak told that on the driver point of view there was nothing he could have done differently. You can watch this watercrossing from photographs and it looks very smooth outside, unfortuantely human is not able to see under the water too well. It was just down to pure bad luck. He was driving through the splash with 1st gear on.
Normally, this rally is not so destructive. There were huge floods including big landslides in February and the region is still recovering from this. So, we can blame weather. One cannot hope that minor roads will be rearied in couple of months.

They did this mistake in recce already and nearly all drivers undersytood th correct route. It is just a big mistake by co-drivers. It is not the first time for Ogier te get lost on the stage ;-)

Numerous reports coming in that the stages are especially rough and tricky this year...

Could be many on Rally2 after day one... sensible driving should pay dividends.

As I said before the start - the drivers knew what they were in for and to drive accordingly would bring a good result. And as said earlier, many of the problems were not to do with the rally and could happen anywhere...

This sort of event makes the WRC the challenge it should be. Driving well is not all about speed.

Exactly.

We've had these easy cruising rallies in recent years and everyone including fans here online have come to follow a rally that isn.t difficult.... Bring on more rounds like this.
