14th September 2014, 02:25
strange gaps between drivers: 3, 5, 4 ,3 min...
Yes, i agree, very strange
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 02:26
Owhh, very tricky jump for Paddon, almost loosing it over there
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 02:28
Paddon just a fraction faster as teammate Neuville, let's see if it is enough to beat Ostberg on this one
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 02:30
Ostberg faster by 0,9 sec to Paddon
marcosg
14th September 2014, 02:32
Yes but what happens if car 1 cuts takes the posts out and some cars follow , do they punish car 1 for the cut , how then can they punish the next cars if the posts are not in place , they are opening a big can of worms are they not ....
put stronger posts as some already do...
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 02:35
Mikkelsen just cruising, nothing to win i suppose
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 02:39

What a crock. 1 minute penalty. Credibility of the sport is damaged by inconsistent penalties.
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 02:41
Latvalla is surely going for it
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 02:42
But is slower as Meeke at the end of stage

So stagewin for Meeke
RallyNZ
14th September 2014, 02:47
So if Meeke had done some proper cutting, finished the day 2sec faster, 0.5 in front of Mikkelsen, he would of only been penalised 1sec to drop him 1 place?!?

14th September 2014, 02:51

I guess you are right, but it was rather stupid move by Chris, doing it in front of TV camera's.

No that many outside Australia would know this (Even in Australia). But there'll be some live coverage of the Coates Hire Rally Australia today. It'll be on an affiliate channel on Channel 10 (Called ONE). At the same time, there'll be live coverage of a V8 Supercar race (the Sandown 500) which will be screened on Channel 7. So there in a battle of sorts, to get the motorsport/viewer to watch their motorsport event. What is little known is, Coates Hire is a company owned by Channel 7!

Atko is safely trough, but yet waiting for a decent stagetime for him, for me he is been very disappointing in his home rally
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 05:11
Neuville fastest sofar in 12.43.5
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 05:17
Ostberg is slower by 1,5 sec to Paddon, so Hayden is closing in a little bit
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 05:20
Hirvonen faster by 1,2 sec to Neuville
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 05:26
Meeke is trough with fastest time in 12.39.1
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 05:29
Latvalla was pushing for sure, trough in 12.33.9, let's see if Ogier is reacting
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 05:30
On final split, Ogier is fastest, 2 sec faster as JML, so he is responding to the attack
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 05:32
Ogier is fastest in 12.32.7, so i think it is over for victory

11:44 PM here (or 23:44 in international time). And it does look like it's over with two 10 km stages to go:
JML via Twitter and Facebook:
SS18: It's getting harder to catch Ogier now, with normal driving it's not possible. I need him to make a little mistake. I have not been taking splits so I wasn't aware - sometimes you have to have the confidence in your own speed.
wwbroe
14th September 2014, 05:46
It will normally be impossible for him to catch Ogier in normal circumstances, Ogier will need to make a mistake for JML to stand a change for a win, but i don't see that happening. Let's see if he will charge for maximum points at power stage, but i am pretty sure he will. ;)

So, this rally is over, Ogier extending his lead a ltlle bit more, VW taking manufacturers championship. Some very nice driving by VW drivers, but also by Meeke, who was the only one able to challenge VW boys. Disappointment of the rally was Atkinson, not able to realise any decent time. Nasser taking the win in WRC2.

Congrats to VW for the 2nd title in a row. Nice driving from 1st 4 drivers, Hirvonen & Paddon.
About Meeke's & Mikkelsen's penalties - could their shortcuts be classified as "dangerous" for the spectators. Stewards for sure note this in the protocol for Meeke.

Happy for Kris he's now showing that he can be fast and consistent and the contract for next year must be secured already. Hope that with more experience with the rallies and the car he can be a little bit faster and will chalenge the VW boys. Also positive rally for Kubica menaging to finish it without rally2 and taking some points. Still making small mistakes but experience is needed to be fast and consistent in WRC. Bring on rally France now!

14th September 2014, 11:55
There is no specified penalty this is the problem and there is no specific term as to what specifies a "cut" it is down to the stewards view on the situation , and to who see's it ....
It's a circuit racing rule, 'respect track limits' - and has no place in Rallying. Even the penalty is a circuit racing penalty; 'gaining an advantage' so has to give a place up; so, if you are 5,10,30 secs or even 5mins ahead of the car behind, you have to drop behind them. Utterly ridiculous - if you must get a penalty, name it 5/10 secs.
But, why had this rule been introduced? 'Cutting' had been in Rallying forever....so why change it now?
FiA Jobsworths strike again.
So VW get their 1,2,3 and the Manufacturers Title. Well seeing as Jost loves RallyX, maybe they can go there, and take him with them - and leave the WRC alone.

14th September 2014, 12:05
Funny talk about the cutting.
The decision is completely in line with the age-old rule in rallying: competitors must follow the route shown in the road book. Quite often (in special stages) it's applied in a way that atleast two wheels have to be on the marked route. If you take a massive cut, you're not following the route. In some occasions organizers should also prevent cutting in places they don't want it to happen (like perhaps here should have been done).

Yeah but when infringements are becoming more often, penalties should become harsher...
The main concern here isn't the fact that (short)cutting is penalised but that there are no proper ground rules and the penalties are completely random.

Funny talk about the cutting.

I am not fully awake BUT In English route does NOT mean "where you place the car at any given moment here or there. It means a number of related things
where the word came from:
early 13c., from Old French rute "road, way, path" (12c.), from Latin rupta (via) "(a road) opened by force," from rupta, fem. past participle of rumpere "to break" (see rupture (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=rupture&allowed_in_frame=0) (n.)). Sense of "fixed or regular course for carrying things" (as in mail route) is 1792, an extension of the meaning "customary path of animals" (early 15c.).
Next is how its generally understood or used currently:

At STOP sign go 90 left, then flat for 3 lights then 90 R ----> flat 2 blocks, 90 L --> first street 90R+ first house on R+ Finish.
Or to use clearly "The route to Moscow goes via Warsawa, Smolensk, then Borodino,
The language of "Must stay to/on the prescribed route" in no way hints or implies or even whispers anything about just where you position the car . Not should you drive the CAR in the middle of the road, over to one side --hopefully-- or on the shoulder..No hint at all...

Well, anyone can go into the semantics. Organizers were aware of the possibility for some big cuts and hence, the issue was addressed in Bulletin No1 :
"2. Deviation from formed Roadway
Competitors are advised that the compulsory itinerary of the rally is deemed to follow the
defined roadway and that significant deviations from the roadway will be treated as a
breach of FIA WRC Regulations Art. 14.2. The organisers may erect barriers or any
other hindrances where they believe competitors have deviated from the roadway during
reconnaissance or the first running of the stages."
I hope that is clear enough for you. :)

Well, it´s not semantics when John is trying to tell the difference between route and road. Meeke was leaving the road not the route, which for me more means between stages, transportsträcka in swedish.
"Roadway" is the word they use in bulletin no1. However hinders are not very adeqvat if not described in pictures before in bulletin. Maybe they was?

I was almost ran over and my gopro made a car spin in Norway this summer when i was standing in the middle of a field, i heard that it was ok as long as there is no junction in the road book at that corner...

Ej poiki I'm very thick in the head...and ya' know, I have seen my whole life a million misunderstandings --90% minor, 30% funny, all based on slight nuances of non-native speaker on one side or even better 2 non-native speakers speaking 3rd language....
Road
Roadway
Right of Way
Chausee
weg
väg
veg
tie
Are all these the exact same thing..
See, spoken language we make little unconscious adjustments because we want to understand the other person...so we're so to say not toooooo picky
Lotta you guys understand my rusty ol' 70s Swedish both as written and the rude jokes underlying because we're OK people just yacking about WRC or as a friend came up with (he's from Texas but didn't like the Prez) the Dubya Arsey...
So just talking all those things pretty much the same.... But strictly speaking a RIGHT of WAY means something....and a roadway means something slightly different from a Road---or we wouldn't have the different words..
Now we know most Aussie are permanently beer-ed to near death, its the only way to dela with the heat and the sodding huge nasty FLIES!!! so while they're sitting round the table, pissed as a preist, they may not be expressing themselves in a 100% clear way.....people TEND to try and write "Proper!" and usually get into trouble that way..
What I'm saying is LITTLE is clear at second glance..The organiser should have at the bottom written
DON'T CUT!

We finished, got 3rd in National 4wd series in the Evo 9. Had a few problems early on Bucca stage with broken rear different bolt so we cruised through the rest of the stage and the next. Fixed it at service and got through ok.
Tanaks accident stopped Bucca 2 stage and they weren't going to re green the stage after a 45 min stoppage so all the drivers made the decision not to do the stage unless it was greeted. So it was a transport then.
Atko was shafted by his team. Tyre choice hurt him big time and he just did what he was told all week. Disappointing that he wasn't allowed to make his own setup choices. It seemed more to be test session for Hyundai.
Anyway now into Safari mode, heading to Western Australia for the Australasian Safari this Wednesday.

How did times compare with WRC field Ray? Shame that your national championship cannot run in conjunction with the WRC field, and let you guys mix it with the main field. One of the downfalls of the new WRC that needs remedying.

In 2013 in Russian championship leg several times champion Zhigunov made "a liitle cuts":

There were a lot of discussions (very similar to those in this tread) about it, but no further decisions were made.
As for me, I support penalizations for things like these, otherwise it may turn rally into an - "find the best available shortcut", absurd.

Meeks punishment was way over the normal limit. In my mind, Mikkelsens extremely stupid cut was punsihed with proper way. As a rally driver you must have some respect to the local people. You are not doing much damage when you cut from the grassland or from the wasteland but through the potato field (you can get only one crop from that field in a year).. it is idiotic. Andreas learned it in a hard way that it is not allowed. Meeks situation was completely unfair. Some heavy oral reprimand from the organizers would have been fair.

Does anyone know what was the total cost of the damage to the vines at Rallye Deutschland? Did the event insurance cover this or do the teams have to pay for the damage their driver caused? And will the insurance be available for next year?

All the FIA events must have insurances for the third parties (that means landowners, grape owners, house owners etc.).All the costs will be coverd. Total cost is business secret for insurance company.

Some of the smoother stages we were just off Friserio's times, we are running Kumho's which are a lot slower than all the WRC tyres. The stages this year were the roughest i have seen them, the good stuff was very good and the bad very bad.
We would love to be able to run on the same tyres as the WRC field but we have a control tyre.

Didn't bother to follow thw rally too closely dunring the weekend, but having sewn the fottage of Meeke's cut I strongly feel that the penalty was unfair and not justified. There has been far more severe incidents before and there was no danger to anyone.
Why are they trying all they can to kill all the thrill from a sport that is already getting less and leas exciting

Well I read some posts talking about the semantics of the rules regarding Meeke's cut so downloaded the FIA regulations myself.
14.2 ROAD BOOK
All crews will receive a road book containing a detailed description of the itinerary. This itinerary and the road direction diagrams must be followed. Any deviation will be reported to the Stewards.
Does not say anything in that about cutting corners. If it did Ogier would have been fined for Germany SS1 when he set off first and put his wheels in the mud on virtually every corner to dirty the road for those behind.
On a tarmac section if cutting is not allowed it should read something like: "A driver must not allow his vehicle to leave the tarmac surface of the road" or "At no time must a driver allow the vehicle to have more than x wheels of his vehicle off of the surface of the road in corners on either the left or right side of the finished tarmac.[not meaning jumps, the sides of the road]."
litifeta

and on another point, I have no idea about Europe, but on a land map in Australia the actual road is usually many many metres either side of the surface that is used to drive on. The land map is provided to determine who actually owns the piece of land that is being used as a thoroughfare. In cities for instance, the footpath is included in the thoroughfare and a landowner does not 'own' their footpath. It is their responsibility to maintain it to allow non motorised access.

I really enjoyed Rally Australia - the event is improving every year. Shame that Latvala chose the wrong tyres for the second loop on Saturday, he was looking very fast out on the stages. The VWs are in a league of their own at the moment, Kris Meeke is the next best. Mads just seemed to be over driving the car, may have been setup related? A good performance by Paddon, has taken a mature approach and has put in some great times.
