Not saying this was the cause, but concentration must be 100% at these speeds.

Would have to agree with with BF, close chopper activity is normal these days. Drivers just ignore (or should ignore) such things and just drive. Breen looked like he just lost concentration and got off line or perhaps a wrong/misheard note. Unfortunate whatever the reason.
Edit- was it this stage a clock or something fell out of the dash?

I'm just wondering, I know Peugeot had limited resources to develop the R5, but is it really that hard to make a reliable car in first place (even not so fast at the beginning)? I guess M. Wilson is the big winner from this. Fiesta also had some issues at the beginning (with the drivetrain if I recall correctly), but looks like they're all sorted out long ago.

Not a surprise, the car looks fast and well sorted in the test videos.
I have to say the Peugeot is more loud and lairy, but it is also unreliable and looks overall unrefined.

Someone asked why 208 T16 is not falling apart in Italy, Denmark.. I think it is good car on smooth surface where there car is not falling apart. In ERC they must run 100% and most of these tarmac rounds have been pretty punishing for the car (huge cuts in Belgium, bumpy surface in Barum rally etc.) it is not sorted out on gravel as well, specially on fast gravel (as it was visible in Rally-Estonia).

- Congratulations to Pech! He was kind of expected to win here but he got the job done.
- Disappointed with Lappi's accident. I think he did have good speed potential here, I still think the Fabia would have been capable of fighting for the win here.
- Some good pace from some Fabia S2000 privateers caught the eye
- Again a disaster for Peugeot. The car has the pace, for the moment at least, but they haven't capitalised.
- Presuming Kopecky made it to the end and Mirek's timings from yesterday were correct, the future looks good for Skoda. Says something when the R5 which hasn't been homologated yet is more reliable and faster than the one(s) which have.

From the spectators point of view, the Friday is best at Barum Rally ;-) Start ceremony and city stage at night are the things why we go there, the atmosphere at the bus station at night is just amazing! The stages are in my opinion more interesting to drive yourself than to watch. Very challenging, very fast and therefore dangerous. Difficult to find good places as a non-accreditated filmer.

What kind of rally is this? Stages in villages making drivers going out just touching sidewalks...? Pity for Lappi. Should´nt have happened on proper stages.
Do You realize that there is 6x higher population density in CZ than in Sweden? There are no stages without passing villages. It's almost same with whole central Europe and basically in any asphalt country. On Troják it's two villages on a 22 km long stage and Lappi isn't first to crash there but many more crashed in forest. So what about making the stages out of forests?
I can't believe the number of punctures on the last stage of the day
Even Lefčbvre lost the lead in Junior ERC because of that :mark:
One curious point. When me and Pluto spoke with Chris Ingram during scrutineering he said he doesn't believe in too many punctures here. He was here for the first time so it's interesting to see the first impressions (although from the past we know it's opposite).

retired (18 - Valoušek Pavel / Šlehoferová Martina): excluded - car non compliance with article 255.4.4. Appendix J
Any idea why that is?
As far as I heard the reason was that the car was OK weight without the crew (1200 kg limit) but bellow the limit for a car including crew (1360 kg). Martina Šlehoferová (Škardová) is rather small and slim (some people said today that she was under 50 kg). Stupid mistake anyway.
On a positive note, Mark Higgins is doing well in an N4 Subaru. Started a bit slow, but has built up to clearly be the fastest of the R4/N4 cars now and slowly working his way up the leaderboard.
The car was disappointing for me. The engine was loud but appeared really weak compared to the Lancers. On the city stage when Mark was overtaken by Březík the difference was huge.

So the rally is over and here are my impressions. It wasn't the best rally I have visited but it wasn't bad at all. The obvious downside was huge number of early retirements among the top crews. Despite that the fight lasted till the last meter for almost whole top ten so there was still a lot to watch!
Qualification stage/shakedown
We took my favorite place at the exit of the village with a long left one with cut following by an S turn over a bridge (left to right) with a big bump in the cut to the right one. Very nice action there! Since his first pass Tänak was driving with some completely crazy sideways sliding in a rather high speed. Whether it was due to the tyres or his driving I don't know but it was clear he can't be really fast this way (although very spectacular). Abbring and Kostka drove a bit different than others. Braking and accelerating earlier (slower in but faster out). Orsák had a huge moment at the bump in second free run. he was driving much slower in the qualification. Kresta had a small off in the qualification run so he ended pretty low. Another one with a huge moment from the bump was Kobliha but anyway it was clear he is going to show some serious effort!
City stage
As usually the best show was from historic cars. Béreš managed to destroy his tyres on some 6 kilometers to the state that he was throwing sparks everywhere :D From modern ones Abbring and Pech looked really confident throwing the cars sideways already before the hairpins. However Kopecký was the only one who was driving really long drifts as he was not pushing for time there. Simpson also drove quite a lot for spectators. Pity for Jakeš, first PSA R5 broke already there. Two strange moments. One was crash of Suchý near the bus station and the other was near frontal crash of Vágner and Lefevbre. Vágner spun and pushed the throttle to turn back into his direction when Lefevbre came directly against him. Despite the headlights shining in his face Lefevbre managed to avoid the crash! That was really scary moment!
SS1 Slušovice
I took another of my favorite places but for the first time in this direction. It was a long fast left corner after an RPM limiter approach with a big cut over a bank inside. This was awesome place! The first drivers were probably surprised because the rear axles of many cars were kicked in the air (Lappi, Breen for example). Crugnola had a big moment there when he didn't cut but the dirt almost made him crash in high speed. Another interesting thing was Kresta's suspension which appeared to be by far the best of all cars to me.
SS3 Troják
We decided to take the new jump over the road. Very crowded, supersafely taped and quite boring place in fact. Only Tänak made a big jump (and almost lost control there) and Abbring had a scary moment when he jumped a bit sideways with a heavy landing. Maybe the overheating had something to do with this as well. Odložilík lost rear bumper and that was all what happened before we left. Again have to mention Kresta's suspension as his car landed very smoothly and straight compared to the most of others.
SS6 Slušovice
A corner just few hundred meters after the first one. Fast left with a cut against a bridge with very fast approach. This was another perfect place! Basically everybody who cut the corner ended on two wheels including all top drivers except Valoušek who drove some very strange line in the middle of the road. Romanian Clio driver Filip had a big moment there.
SS8 Troják
We took a corner just before last year's crash place of Lappi. It's a sharp left corner in a downhill which is inclined out. Sometimes there are offs there (some 208 R2 was there in first run) but when we were there nothing happened except one unintentional slide by Odložilík.
SS11 Pindula
We walked deep in the forests to a long and narrow hairpin which was completely covered by mud. Unfortunately almost all drivers took the place very carefully. Only Pech, Wiegand and Janecký (with little 1400 ccm Fabia) made some nice sliding there.
SS14 Pindula
We went a bit farther to a place where Kresta had a massive crash in 2008 but now it was opposite direction. Still very fast place with a short right corner with a muddy cut. Orsák and Tarabus looked pushing the most (also Tänak looked really fast there). Suddenly we heard a bang from a corner before. We run there and it was Odložilík who lost it in a left-hand 3rd gear corner and hit a tree directly at the roadside. It was quite big impact on the right rear wheel and the car rotated 180° degrees after that. Co-driver was feeling sick so it was safer to send there ambulance. Kajto, Wiegand and Kostka lost some 1-2 seconds there when a friend with a nearest marshal slowed them a bit not to hit the car. Another crews came slowly under yellow flags before the ambulance came. Another few crews went slowly but Crugnola and Griebel were pushing. That was very dangerous both because of some spectators on the road and also because they could have caught the ambulance passing quite slowly just few minutes before them. After another few minutes the stage was restarted.
All in all I'm really happy that Czech crews managed to give more than a hard time to the ERC regulars. I felt very sorry for Kresta. He was doing an amazing job and I'm pretty sure he had the speed to win (not sure about fight with Abbring if he lasted). The disappointment was obviously Tänak and Kajetanowicz. Tänak was driving crazy (but quite not effective on asphalt) so at least he was very spectacular but Kajto was near invisible where I was.
In 2WD I was really happy for young driver Kobliha who won in a great style despite having only little experience with the car. From juniors Lefevbre was obviously the king. He was not driving so crazy like in Ypres. A bit calmer and more precise I would say. Again Opel Adam showed fantastic chassis on the rough road and helped Griebel to take the second place. Černý was another disappointment. He wanted to win but he was pushing probably too much making plenty of mistakes.

i noticed the same and i also think it can be due to tires

i agree it was boring place because it was dificult to find a good place to spectate...
you maybe right about kresta suspension but for me he was the one who took it best also... really nice braking aproach and really nice "flight" and landing
I felt very sorry for Kresta. He was doing an amazing job and I'm pretty sure he had the speed to win (not sure about fight with Abbring if he lasted).
i'm happy with pech's win, he is always my favorite for the win when he has the car to do it, but i'm also sad for kresta... he was doing amazing job, somewhat surprised me when i saw how good he was doing from early on, so i would be very happy for him too if he would win
Again Opel Adam showed fantastic chassis on the rough road and helped Griebel to take the second place. erný was another disappointment. He wanted to win but he was pushing probably too much making plenty of mistakes.
i've been noticing that the adam handles really well indeed and it's a nice surprise after the bad corsas (s1600 and s2000)... unlike c2 r2 for example, it seems wider and lower, thus making it easier in big cuts and high speed corners (maybe also nice suspension)...
cerny was under lot of pressure to show good result at home to keep his championship lead, and maybe he couldn't manage it... and then the punctures (result of his mistakes) put an end to his hopes of wining...
once again barum proved to be a top event in the championship, and like many years in the past, always interesting from the begining to the finish!

Great event again, glad to have been back again after the editions of '09 and '10. The stages are stunning. This year we drove the complete version of Pindula in the dusk on thursday night, it's crazy to drive even with a normal car at normal speed!
Friday some nice fast corners on shakedown/QS. Still hoping to let the "normal" shakedown-system make it's comeback for all drivers next year... Tanak and Consani were very impressive to see, he threw the car sideways before corners already, I'm not sure it was effective but it was really nice to see. Interesting was official Peugeot's hitting the ground with the chassis in one corner, while noone of the other cars did this. They hitted the tarmac, but the 208's kept more stable than other cars (except Skoda's) anyway. On ceremonial start and the city stage the atmosphere was great, as always! The action started off a bit strange with the old Bugatti show, not my thing, but better than nothing I guess? Amazing to see the S1 E2 Quattro from Beres in real, what a beast of a car! Of course many other great cars in the Star Rally, pitty the itinerary doesn't really allow you to see them on saturday without missing action from ERC.
On saturday we did 4 stages. Started off on Slusovice on a fast bumpy left one. All was OK until some safety-car moved everyone away, even if they were 20-30m away from the road on a completely safe place. Found some downhill medium-right, it wasn't bad but not great either. Then we went to Trojak. Very technical place with a bit slower corners, tricky braking downhill etc. But it proved to be too delicate to be really spectacular. On that place I saw Kevin Abbring retire, all he could comment was "kutzooi", but I was probably the only one who understood that... Then off to Slusovice again for some fast left with cut in forest, followed by long fast right between railguards. Nice place, it was also interesting to see that it wasn't always the quickest to cut deep. For Gr.N and R2 cars this place was very nice too since they became quite unstable when exiting the corner and cut (having some edge between cut and road). We ended the day with Semetin, fast left over sharp crest/jump followed by a little slower right over crest/jump. Tarabus had some big moment there, for other cars big differences between drivers. Wiegand for example was really slow and lost multiple seconds on only these 2 turns. The Fabia R5 was extremely stable and had a very good jump, weight balance looked perfect (while most other cars landed more on the front).
On sunday we did only 2 stages and podium. First was a fast right on Pindula, with some dirty cut. On this place Wiegand looked fast, very different to anything else I've seen from him. Also Pech looked very fast, even while having a solid lead. The other place we did was 2 fast right corners (with cuts) on Zadverice 2. The first one was muddy but dried out before 2nd run already, there were still some cars going sideways. Tanak was very impressive (again), throwing the car sideways already while still braking for the corner.
Other than that not much more to add. Only that Fabia R5 is a extremely boring car to see and hear. The car is extremely stable and very quiet. The sound of the car somehow remembers me of the old Corolla WRC-sound.

The stages are stunning. This year we drove the complete version of Pindula in the dusk on thursday night, it's crazy to drive even with a normal car at normal speed
Interestingly each year I find more and more reports from people that get completly "hooked up" on these stages after they drive them... even at normal/slow speeds...
It's not easy to "explain" this to others that only watch onboards at home (although they get a quite nice impression)...
These are really quite unique roads...
I'm also into circuit racing, and for me Barum is the Nordschleife of Rallying :)

No, he gave the notes correctly including a "caution". Driver's error this time.
Thanks for the info Mirek!
It seems the codriver was still talking shortly before the corner as if he realised his mistake. But as I don't understand much of what he was saying...
Anyway a huge pitty. Only brakes a little to late and his chance on victory was gone... Could have challenged Pech till the end I think...

IMO the Co-driver didn´t have anything to do with this off. It´s all about the Driver when this kind of things happen AFTER the apex of the corner..
..and I don´t understand any Czech but I do understand something of the Driving/Co-driving ;) ;)
Still that was a great shame for the Jaro but maybe it somehow make things easier for him in the rest of the rally (no pressure)??

He just arrives to fast, tries to still make the corner but he was just going to fast.
Arriving to fast can be codriver error, here it wasn't apparently :)

What impresses me is that Breen has much more information in the pacenotes than Abring. Probably the first time I watch onboards from the two of them.

Rallies were killing people here. We must put "zakazany prostor" to save rallysport, not to be forbidden. Despite it there is lot of place where you can go and watch the stages without problems. You were not accredited?

it's true there are many forbiden areas in barum, but nothing too much... you can actually cross the roads and move around in the stages as they are runing... you should come to portugal and see what is a little bit too much... :)

Yes and IMO not! CB got sooo detailed pace notes and I think that it could be the reason in this off. It´s very hard to understand all the information that co-driver gives you in the fraction of a second..
BTW Scott handles the situation very professionally after the crash - only few hundred meters and he got on the spot again ;)

I know that very well PLuto, but I still think the forbidden areas were too big, too often and sometimes strange. Someone with no media accreditation (like me) was forced to think hard how to take interesting photos.
The best thing about this rally was... cold kofola sold few meters from the special stage ;)

I sure agree that some safety zones were too large but there were so weird accidents in our rallying that it has a reason. Just look at this accident from Semetín this year with one of the historic cars. Who was ever on that place would agree that the tape was in a more than safe distance but still the car got there...
