So - no VW win in Germany this year either. And no VW win in all rallies of the season. And it seems that either Meeke or Neuville will score their maiden win. If it's Meeke, Citroen magic remains unbroken, if it's Neuville it's also Hyundai maiden win.

Bouffier is trough in second stage of the day. It will be up to Meeke and Neuville to decide for the win. So Citroen is going to keep their record in this rally or is it going to be the first win for Hyundai? I would put my money on Meeke, but we will see.

I've been supporting him since 2008. But over and over, all these years, his prone to crash is really high. All the time he is talking about focus, but aparently his focus skills is equal to monkey's focusing skills.
I mean come on. Yesterday is another example of how reckless JML can be. He is in the lead with a comfortable time, 40 something seconds, and he was pushing like hell. I mean come on. No point to take risks.
That is exactly what happened today. Taking risks and driving fast. This is the result.

I feel really sorry for Latvala and Meeke. Tough they both have som issues regarding risk management, they have driven a fantastic rally until their missfortunes.
Being of the "Nose End First" school, neither driver is a favorite of mine style wise, because of the tendences to retain speed rather than invest and accelerate, but Latvalas rally Finland was incerdible to watch. He has been a real force in Germany, and have showed new found form. But there is preassure with being in the lead. Knowing that You are going to not only take Your first tarmac win, but also close the gap in the championship to around 20 points, bringing the fight back on.
Meeke also incredible in Finland, and likewise here. I tought that an of in the very start would contain him a little, but a win in sight can mess with Your head.
They have both put real color to this rally, and for that I salute them!
Regarding Hyundai, if Neuville and Sordo can keep it on the black stuff for the remaining stages, it will be a terrific result for them. Their Rally HQ is situated in Germany, so a "home" victory. They will get massive media, wich is important for their continoued effort in the WRC. I am sad on the behalf of Latvala and Meeke, but equally happy o the behalf of Hyundai (as long as they stay on the black stuff;))
As Finland, this has been and is an incredibly exciting rally, and thats without shootouts or other artificial injections, and I am greatfull for beeing a big fan of what is regaining its place as the greatest motorsport on earth. Wow, what a rally!
There are som loosers here and there are some winners, but the biggest winner is the sport of the WRC it self, and thats the most important win of all.
And one more thing: Can we now agree on the Hyundai being a winning car?;)

Just woke up and must say I'm quite shocked with the news of this morning! The problem with both JML and Meeke is you don't know how they will handle it psychologically as well, they both must be devestated. But after all it's their own fault...

It is indeed not easy to still be a fan of Jari-Matti Latvala due to his mistakes, but he has his very fast days and - as important for me - he is such a friendly person.
Latvala is a very sympatetic person, and a driver You know is rally trough and trough, driving the Lahti historic on his "off" time, restoring rally cars with his father, and just being obsessed with going fast. In Finland he was both "Nose End First" and "Latvala-fast", and it was great. Is it one guy I really would like to win it is Latvala!
And I feel kind of sorry for him, because he takes theese offs so emotionally. I am afraid that this will have him back in " safe mode". He must keep pushing, he is in brilliant form - and the championship needs it!
I have to say the same about Kris Meeke. He is such a caracter, and a very friendly guy, totally commited, and a complete joy to talk to. And he brings color to the championship with his playfull comments vs Ogier.
I think that Meekes speed here in Germany has made his seat in Citroën safer. And I hope we see Citroën running the same two drivers in 15.

i must say this situation reminds me Japan 2007, where Loeb went out and the end of the same day, Gronholm was out to, i think (unless Ogier isn't done with his mistakes for this year) from here till the end of the season the path is layed out for Ogier. one more thing finally VW's winning streak is over, and History will be made (if they make it to the finnish) first time Hyundai win and a first for Neuville, and first time no Citroen on the podium :(

i can imagine Kris meeke saying, "that's my career over" again.
I think Kris has impressed big time both in Finland and Germany, so his position should be quit safe. I think he actually could end up in a bidding war (a low scale one) between M-Sport and Citroën.

Regarding mads next year, i think he will be in Citroën then too. He has had a open approch that he adapt to the car, not other way around. He have to deliver on the last gravelrallies, and show that he is closer to the best on tarmac.
And, he drives for free.

Quick and very informal analyzing of the drivers based on the footage of the testing:
I have given scores based on speed and risk level, where a 10/10 would be the perfect score.
The speed would indicate the possible pace, and the risk the possibility for keeping up that speed during the whole event.
First: A lot of very good driving. So the fight for the second place could be a close one;) Of course limited footage, so this is only based on what was available, but could give a reasonable prediction.
VW:
- Ogier in a class of his own. He is a VERY strong favorite for the win. Especially if the weather turns wet. 9.0/8
- Latvala looks on the pace, but not as precise as Ogier. But clearly on a mission. The trick, as always, for Latvala is what has the win in Finland done for his psyche, will this be good or bad? Could fight for second. 8.7/7
- Mikkelsen. Looks very good, should be in the fight for the podium. 8.0/6
Citroën:
- Meeke should be strong, but can equally end up in the wine ranks. So its a fight for the podium, or taking the extended tour;) 8.5/5
- Østberg surprisingly good, although limited footage, and only dry weather. But I don't think I have seen him so Loeb-ish on tarmac before - could we be in for a surprise? 8.0/9
Hyundai - I think Hyundai could make a very positive result.
- Sordo, looks very good. Has been a little unprecice at a previous tarmac test, but looked better now. But the footage was not the best to make the call. But could be in for a podium fight. 8.7/7
- Neuville. Looks very strong, but a bit to eager. Will have to pace him self on the second run trough in the dry, and always in the wet. 8.0/5
- Bouffier. Tough very good, nothing is to be expected. A difficult rally, and every sound progression will be a victory in it self.
Ford:
- Hirvonen, looks surprisingly good, and precise. Could also fight above what have become expected of him this season. 8.0/9
- Evans. Have a very high risk of understeering off on the second runs, or in the wet. 7.0/3
- Kubica. Sometimes fast, but also unprecice and high risk. Will be quick in the dry, but quick and unsafe in the wet. 8.0/3
Speed ranking:
9.0:
Ogier
8.7:
Latvala
Sordo
8.5:
Neuville*
Meeke*
8.0:
Mikkelsen
Østberg
Hirvonen
Kubica*
7.0
Evans*
*High Risk
So how did this pan out?
Regarding speed and risk:
Ogier:
- Seeed: Was fastest, so correct.
- Risk: Way off on the initial analysing, but picked up on it during the event. I should have taken 2013 in account. BIG mistake by me!
Latvala:
- Speed: Correct.
- Risk: Way off! Again my mistake.
Sordo:
- Speed: Sordo was fast, but Neuville faster, so almost correct, but correct about the speed of the Hyundais.
- Risk: Correct.
Neuville:
- Speed: Almost correct, should have been placed above Sordo.
- Risk: Correct. Judged him as high risk, and he went of on SD. Half jokingly said that he could repeat the efforts of Petter Solberg on Corsica in 2003, wich he did. Congratulations!
Meeke:
- Speed: Correct.
- Risk: Correct. Had a spin the first day, hoped that would be it, but went of on the last day...
Mikkelsen:
- Speed: Correct
- Risk: Correct. Judged him 6/10, and he did have a moment destroying a wheel.
Said he was going to fight for a podium, he ended up third, so correct.
Østberg:
- Speed: Correct when it was all dry, but he has bigger difficulties in the wet/when there is mud on the tarmac than I expected. Not the positive surprise I visioned.
- Risk: Correct
Hirvonen:
- Speed: Half correct, actually tought it would be a chance of him going faster.
- Risk: Correct
Kubica:
- Speed: Correct
- Risk: Correct
Evans:
- Speed: Started correct, but he had a great progression trough the event, congratulations!
- Risk: The testing was some of the worst I have ever seen (and thats not taking in account his off), and I was dead certain he would understeer of at SS2. But boy did he prove me wrong!
Hyundai: Predicted a very positive result for Hyundai, and I think we can agree that that was correct.
Conclusion:
Speed: Judgements of speed based on testing footage was quite precise.
Risk: Judegement of risk based on testing footage was a lot less precise.
Overall: Not bad - I think, but have to work on the risk factor.

I know i bore You with my insights, but one question I have to ask You: Knowing that all three leaders except Neuville went of in dramatic accidents, would You say that that speed was sustainable?
I do not think i understand the question... can you rephrase ? whose speed ? Neuvilles or Latvala/Meeke ?

Well only 3 weeks to Australia, something to look forward to. Will be interesting to see how the Hyundai's go in the Australian gravel.
I'll be competing at the event so can give some updates during recce and the event. Any forum members heading to the event make sure you say hi.

Nah wasn't there, a few of my friends were though. Quite a few Aussies went to Finland this year. Next year for me, looking for a car to lease for the event. Have to get rid of a few driving cobwebs before though seeing as I have been codriving for the last 4 years.

Great victory in WRC4 for Griebel, he was dominating the debate's during the whole weekend. Good for the Opel Adam, who seem to be well faster as the Fiesta's.;)
I think they are on different tyres? And tyres really do make a difference;) But the Adams are strong, no doubt about it!

I told my buddy couple of weeks ago that with Latvala, there is a pettern. He wins one rally, then crash the next and then he makes three to four rallyes 90% pace telling in every interview that now he has learnt something new to keep his cool :mark:
You can't help Latvala, he is hopeless when it comes to consistency. And that's a real shame. :(
Congrats to Hyundai, this'll make good to teams moral

If you want to be champion and be respected you really cannot afford to make such mistakes especially when you are so experienced in the sport... Latvala might win a championship in the future but he will just be a paper champion with such a mentality.

A few sad faces around Citroen and VW today. Shame about Meeke, wrong note so can't really blame him. As for Lavala, was it just a typical Jari crash or something else?
Well done to Hyundai, a win is a win.

Congratulations to Neuville and Evans, fantastic job they did and I am so glad that we have such promising "youngsters".
Tidemand also deserves applauses.
