Its more than 128 days to go, but the opening event of the ERC 2014, the 31st Jänner Rallye, has already published all informations.
The event runs from Friday, January 3rd to Sunday, January 5th 2014 over 18 - hopefully snow and ice covered - stages with a total length of 245,60 km.

My estimation at the moment about first ERC rally of 2014:
Possible starters:
Gryazin
Baumschlager
Pech ?
Tarabus
Orsak
Kopecky
Lappi ?
Kajetanowicz ?
Besseney
Lukacs
Neubauer
Danzinger
Chentre
Solowow
rather unsure:
Peugeot Rally Academy
Harrach (problems with sponsor)
Bouffier (dependent on his plans 2014)
Cerny (if he gets a car, already sold his R2 and waiting for a R5)
probably not starting:
Andreas Aigner (Subaru starts later according to their business year)
Napoca rally team
Renault Sports (Bonnefis, Consani)
Arai (like Aigner)
Jakes (waiting for his R5)
Fiat-131-Abarth
10th November 2013, 10:14
Other possible starters could be Lappi, Kopecky, Saibel, Grössing, Brugger and hopefully some scandinavian drivers.

maybe another possible driver ist Raffael Sulzinger. The young German, supported by Walter Röhrl, set 3 best stage times last year in the 2WD categorie with an R2 car against Danzinger (R3), Neubauer (S1600), Besseney (R3), Chentre (R2)...
After that he had 3 punctures, so he was not able to fight for the victory but maybe 2014 he can go for it... ;-)

Two more weeks till entries close.
According to Autosport.cz following entries are talked about:
Baumschlager, Tarabus, Saibel, Tlust´ak, Orsak on Skoda S2000
Valousek, Grössing on Fiesta R5
Bouffier on Peugeot S2000
Harrach, Gassner sen. and jun. on Evo
Not sure: Kopecky
No talks about Lappi.
I´d hope for more "ERC"-drivers entries, otherwise I suppose it´s the last Jänner Rallye in ERC.
Don´t think Peugeot works team will start - suppose they will start season either in Latvia with their old cars or finally at Acropolis with R5.
Aigner probably isn´t starting according to Manfred Stohl.

Well Jänner 2014 could really develop a disaster, for organizers - and fans. Who wants to pay 40 Euros for a rally pass just to watch the Austrian drivers and just the one or other Czech driver who isn´t boycotting Jänner 2014 because of it´s date, and hardly any international guests, and above all no works Team like Peugot or Skoda participating.
Now with Latvia at an earlier date and Sibiu as snow rallies I see ERC 2015 with only these two rallies remaining as winter rallies, I´d even bet on this.
Rally organizers must be desperate to announce Blomqvist as a safety car driver and having nothing else to tell to the press ... Even ERC official Homepage seems to have blocked Jänner from the news.
As a local boy i find it very sorry, but Jänner can´t move the date, the organizers are just hobbyists, who are doing the Rally in their Christmas holidays. That was already mentioned as critical for the continued existence of Jänner as an international rally by several observers in the last years, and it looks like this is breaking this Rally.

I guess the "Wintercup" idea was an incentive to get some guys to go there.
Did ERC people try to persuade them to change the date?

We've discussed this issue already in the last years. There are a couple of reasons why a change of the date is hardly possible for the organizers.
1) It would be nearly impossible to find volunteers after Jan 6th when the Christmas holidays are ending in Austria.
2) if the postpone the rally one or two weeks, there would be a High risk that the rally takes place on the same weekend as the Kitzbühel skiing downhill race which is - hardly understandable for non austrians - the most important Sport event in Austria.
I'm really afraid that the 2014 edition could be very critical for the future of this great rally.

Both Pirelli Star driver editions were great. But there were only two short circuit stages - in autum. I think, that most stages of the Jänner Rallye (except Pierbach which is a very twisty stage and the first half of the Schönau - St. Leonhard stage) would be way to fast on dry tarmac. Also because of the mainly very smooth tarmac.
On the other hand the costs for the organsisation of the rally would be much higher, because of crop and field damages. And the farmers in Upper Austria are quite bullheaded and have no understanding for the rally.

I don´t know, and by now I´d rate it only as a rumour - as long as entry list isn´t being published.
Fixed starters seem to be Tarabus and Pech, Valousek wants to start but isn´t sure of his budget.
But in total a very poor entry list seems more than likely as time goes on - an entry list which probably nearly would be the same if Jänner would only count for Austrian championship and European Cup Central Coeff. 10 (like Rallye Waldviertel).

Don't think that I am a daydreamer. I'm also afraid that this year's entre list won't be very good. But the history of the last editions has showed, that most entries of the jänner Rallye are coming in very close before the closing date of the entries.

Some Austrian drivers, also some known ones, are thinking about starting only in national (Austrian) championship, not in ERC. It´s because of the ERC tyre rules for 18" tarmac tyres with the "E"-sign, which results in some uncertainty in Austrian rallye scene. It´s also about gambling with better roads when starting later after the ERC-drivers, and roads being cleared from snow and ice then, if there´s any at all. On the other hand there´s the risk of obtaining worse notional times for national rally championship participants if a stage is cancelled.

Bouffier and both Gassners finally not entered, but in total a more broad entry list in regard of regular ERC starters like Consani, Pushkar and both Napoca Rally Academy drivers as first starters at Jänner - even if the ERC works teams are missing.
Hope guys like Aigner and Kajto can raise funds for a full ERC campaign in top cars.

Neubauer is going for ERC campaign with Subaru and Stohl Racing. Aigner ist still not sure about his plans after Jänner, but he hopes to.
Don´t think we´ll see Bouffier in an ERC campaign 2014 except for some few rallies, but not as much as 2013.
In total I think Kajto could be dangerous to Skoda´s and Peugeot´s plans and take more points as the works teams would like him to. Aigner detto if he can stay with S2000 and change to R5 in summer as mentioned by Manfred Stohl.
Real season starts in Greece when the PSA R5 cars are homologated. Maybe Peugeot could regret missing 3 rallies in the first half of the season and losing one result, who knows ...

You get WRC2 champion and multiple ERC stage winner Kubica (you won´t see him too much in ERC 2014 I suppose), and with Kajetanowicz, Pech, Baumschlager, Aigner, Tarabus and Gryazin drivers who finished on podiums of ERC-rallies in 2013 (I hope I didn´t forget someone) - or at least were in top 3 sometime during the rallies. Besides ERC-PC and ERC 2WD champions of 2013 - so what do you excpect? Of course Skoda and Peugeot are missing, but Skoda will do only 6-8 rallies out of 12 (so only a little bit more than half of the rallies - something different to 2013) - and Peugeot probably starts in March and misses first 3 rallies.

Kajto already won stages this year at Jänner, but how he beat Baumschlager at Waldviertel Rallye with a worse car was really impressing. So now with a better car and watching his performance at Rally Poland this year beating Bouffier, Kopecky, Breen etc. I think he´s a strong tipp for winning. But I´d rate Baumschlager´s and Pech´s chances also very high this year, at least better than the last two years. Of course Kubica is a high tipp for winning too, but everbody knows he´s drifting off road a lot of times - and I think nobody knows how he performs on snow and ice (if there´s any).
Aigner startet two times at Jänner before - but he never reached the finish line, so his performance can´t be estimated.

Since when is Jänner on gravel? Tarabus did some two or three gravel rallies in his whole life...
On Czech asphalts he is usually very close to Pech or Kresta in speed. In some occasion his speed was +- same with the two and that's not bad at all. Of course abroad he is slower due to missing experience and a questionable co-driver (who on the other hand pays it all).

I dont understand the german correctly (also after using translator), but all cars in ERC field must use NEW specification of tyres for tarmac (which is valid from 1.5.2013), actually there is no exception for use older tyres (like was waiver for Pirelli and Yokohama in second half of previous year). And it is not only for 18" tyres, but for all cars (also smaller).
To use snow tyres, it shouldnt be homologated, but must fill the regulations prescribed in regulations/bulletin.

Jänner Rallye 2014 will probably be a pure tarmac Rally - it doesn´t look like weather is changing much, it will still be much too warm for this time of the year. So definitely no snow and maybe some small bits of ice would be a realistic scenario:
http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/MS_1449_ens.png
The horizontal lines in the middle show the temperature in at about 1500 meters above sea level, so at Jänner Rallye area it´s even some degrees warmer. The bottom lines show the expected preciptitation
Bad non-winter weather for the second year in a row - no good requirements for the continuing existence of a winter rally ... It seems like Jänner Rallye is suffering from change of climate.

I must say from spectator view that I'm extremly happy to have an absolute tarmac rally. The speeds are much higher and with gravel on the tarmac due to cutting of the bends it will be very attractive. Whenever there was snow during Jänner Rally everything seemed so slow-there are no studs allowed in Austria !
Rallying on snow&ice in Scandinavia is very attractive due to allowed studs, without studs is boring.....
Expect small group of rally fans from Slovenia !

Studs are allowed in Austria and the were always allowed at Jänner Rallye. The Studs that are allowed in Austria are only much smaller than in Scandinavia. If you had seen the 2011 edition you wouldn't say, that Jänner Rallye on tarmac is more spectacular than on snow.

You are right, but this are short studs (Monte Carlo version), in the Scandinavia are different and therefore the grip and speed is uncomparable....

...and YES Jänner Rallye is spectacular ALSO on Tarmac, but I would prefer Snow...but anyway, the drivers have to deal with it, after seen a few test sessions and sit beside Andi Aigner in Peugeot 207 S2000 i can say Tarmac in Jannuary IS very very difficult and spectacular, but also can be dangerous because of the high speeds!
I´m looking forward to an exiting season start in upper austria, wish everybody here a Happy New Year and hope to see some of you in Freistadt later this week ;)

@WRC1: nice pictures!
Some hints for non locals if going directly to Freistadt (service park, media center, qualifying stage) or to SS 3/6 from Linz: because of a motorway construction there´s heavy traffic south of Freistadt even without a rally. So expect to loose some time from Neumarkt to Center of Freistadt (about 20-30 min for 10 km). For going to SS 3/6 one could also go by Kefermarkt - Lasberg - St. Oswald bypassing Freistadt.

I wouldn't say that a fully Jänner Rallye on tarmac is completley boring. Some stages like Pregarten or Liebenau are really not perfect for a tarmac rally as the are too fast. But on the other hand you have really beautiful stages like Pierbach which is very twisty and is going up- and downhill all the time. Also Unterweissenbach or the Aisttal Stage are very beautiful.

Thank you for useful tip !! As it seems you are local guy, could you give me followings tips for:
- immediately after the start of stage 1/4 it seems from the stages plan that this stage could be reached for spectators from the parallel road. True ??
- what do you think about combining stages 1/4 with stages 3/6 (St.Ostwald)-I would use local road Bad Zell-Gutau-St.Oswald and reverse.
Fiat-131-Abarth

The start of stage 1 is directly next to the main road (B 124). But parking is not that easy there, because parking at the side of the main road is forbidden. Combination of stage 1 and 3 is possible easily. You can watch at least the first 30 cars before leaving to stage 3.
You can use this road. There are some communal roads where you would be faster, but I wouldn't recomend you to use these roads without local knowledge.
