Aigner disappointing so far. I hope he can get used to the car by the end of the rally and start to push a bit more.

Something must be wrong with Tlustak as well. After SS3 he is down in 25th position behind 2WD cars of Bohm and Bessenyey.

Kubica with a puncture.

Pirelli has been always perfect in cold wet conditions which is probably the case now. Also the tyres he has a completely new never used by anyone before (I think).

I´ll expect Baumschlager to storm ahead of the others on SS 5 and 6 - no or just very little (on SS6) ice there anymore and therefore no studs seem the right choice.

Pech will have no opposition in Czech championship this year. He can risk it and he said he will if the margin won't be too big.

Anyway I would say it's too early for conclusions. A lot of stages to come and a number of them in the darkness.

Harrach said for autosport.cz after SS6:

Fourth stage wasn't very good for us as we lost a lot because of studs. We removed them on the road section, it was a lot of work but it worthed it. We made a really good time on the last stages so that our confidence grew a lot.

This is what rules say:

60.7 HAND CUTTING
The intentional modification of the design of the tyre or the number of studs on the tyres on or in the car is strictly forbidden.

It's not the first time with Harrach on Jänner but somehow he always gets away with that.

The tyre rules where changed just for this rally on Friday.

Tyre rules regarding homologation were changed, not rules regarding the 60.7.

Here's the rule change:
CoC Communication 1: http://www.jaennerrallye.at/fileadmin/u ... m%2001.pdf (http://www.jaennerrallye.at/fileadmin/user_upload/ftp/CoC%20Comm%2001.pdf)

To my understanding, 60.7 still applies (it has not been repealed).

This is the rule that is almost impossible to control. You can always remove studs with heavy braking and accelerating on tarmac or gravel road. So, who says he took it out manually? Who says he was not joking;-) It is very difficult to follow. Therefore, I find that this rule must be delated and it will be equal for everyone.

Mirek

Baumschlager seems to have given up the fight for the moment (and complaining about technical issues and tyres) - seems like a replay of last year, where he also was fighting for top on the first day, on the second day he fell back, maybe thinking about scoring points for Austrian championship. But the rally is still very long and anything can happen - and "Mundl" is an old fox.

EDIT: Harrach already smelling Tarabus´s exhaust fumes after SS 12 ... just 4,6 sec left between these two.

As I few minutes ago wrote down-I was yesterday watching in live (SS1/4 and 7) and first shock was how slippery it was in the morning. Everything coverd by the ice, almost impossible to walk....Second shock came as how many spectators were there already on the first stage...Later in the day ice melted.
I must say I'm very surprised over Kubica's pace, with his limited knowledge&experience on this tricky conditions....what a driver !!

And yes, nobody can say that a dry Jänner is boring. I enjoyed it every single second. Plus, it is much easier for spectators....

In the start (until 2012) he also suffered from many technical problems with his Mini. Very hard technical work by his team together with Prodrive in autumn 2012 brought a change.

Question to Robert Kubica
Can you explain your tyre choice for the final stage and talk us through your drive on the stage?
RK: “I have no experience to be honest. I did see a few things yesterday and today on the stages. The only real tyre test we did was in France last week when it was raining, so similar conditions. But then I added here the Tarmac was more slippery, I was often aquaplaning in the loop before on slicks, we were driving in the night and there would be a lot of mud and my choice would be for snow tyres because we have no wet tyre. But we couldn’t use four tyres because we would be out of the tyre limit for the rally so we decided to put two stud tyres and two snow tyres and it worked out very well. But it hasn’t been an easy stage because there was a lot of fog and I clipped one of the wood sticks and one of the additional lights went out of the support cover and turned into my face. I knew there was fast section and I was trying to switch it off. But the first thing I started searching the button like it was the Citroën but then I realised I’m not any more in Citroën, I am in a Fiesta and then I don’t hear the last pacenotes from Maciej. I saw there was a field, after three times he repeated I hear it but it was too late and we had a big moment and I apologise because it was not nice. It shouldn’t happen but it’s better these things come out now than during the season. We will need to fix because when we are driving in the night I have the buttons on the steering wheel and I couldn’t see anything so we have to do some modifications to help with this. It has been a difficult stage but somehow after two kilometres I knew I had a big advantage so I was just hoping to bring the car to the finish. I was pretty confident the gap would be big enough and so it was the case.”

My summary of Jänner Rallye 2014 – seen from a local fan point of view (watching this rally since 1979 with some exceptions):

Even without Skoda and Peugeot (I think the latter weren´t even expected) a not so bad entry list as first suspected. We had champions from 3 countries and some ERC top drivers too. The absence of Skoda was equalized with M-Sport participating, but this was an one off, as we all know.
The date of the rally will be even more critical in 2015 and 2016, it comes nearer to new years eve one day every year. Finally in 2017 it would be possible to move it away to 6th till 8th january. If Jänner is then still in ERC and MMCR, we´ll see. Maybe some break in the next two years from ERC could be a possibility, who knows.

For fans Jänner is and stays very popular, Rallybase obviously was short from crashing especially on sunday (very long time to load page) – which I never observed before.

And Jänner never is a boring rally where one guy leads from the beginning and wins this rally without hard fighting. This year we saw four different leaders during the rally. Aisttal stages bring some dramatic final every year, with last minute winners and dramatic position changes in the last moment.

The lack of snow became an issue within the last years (in the last 4 years only 2012 was more snow than tarmac), but ice and mud from cutting edges make this rally still very hard for drivers every year. For viewers Jänner is an impressive rally even on tarmac/mud, as I could see these days and as many other specators I talked to stated. Maybe some stages could be done new, at least in parts, so that they aren´t too easy when there is no snow.

My summary of top- and priority drivers at Jänner:

Kubica: very very impressive final, seems to learn tactics now – big improvement compared to his ERC appearances last year. Sad that we won´t get to see him in ERC so soon again – but think he´s a contender of Top Five in WRC this Year
Pech: Also very impressive performance – this year leaving his Austrian rival Baumschlager far behind compared to the last years, when he finished 4th and 5th. Even if he only starts in MMCR, we´ll have to watch him at Barum, where he finished also second in 2013. So he´s an European top driver at any rate.
Baumschlager: A bit dissapointed by his performance, stopped fighting on day two like last year – maybe he gets a bit old slowly?
Harrach: always fights when he´s participating at a rally. His future is uncertain, his sponsor is in financial crisis. He said he´ll do only selected rallies in Austrian championship this year. I don´t understand why he didn´t start with a rented Fiesta, like his teammate Grössing did at one Austrian rally last year. I think he could afford it, his family is a rich and famous one in Austria.
Tarabus: Very good performance, I´d expect him in top ten of every ERC rally he´s doing
Aigner: Very dissapointing start, then slowly consolidating – his future is uncertain too.
Gryazin: solid performance, like in the last ERC rallies he was doing. We´ll hear more from him I suppose
Odlozilik: OK, but probably no danger to Pech in MMCR, even with Tarabus missing this year.
Consani: Good performance, Think 9th place was very important rally for his confidence after his misluck in 2013. Change to an RC2 car was a good decision it seems.
Neubauer: Very good rally – but he´s already used to this car from Austrian championship 2012.
Tlustak: It seems to me he´s always looking for position 9 or 10 and waiting for some drivers in front of him – but at Jänner it doesn´t seem to happen for him. Think this is not his favourite rally.
Kajto: unlucky fellow of the rally – was my tipp for winning and a hard fight with Kubica till the end. Hope he can continue with R5 in ERC, he´d deserve it.
Cerny: No luck for him at Jänner too ... Last year he retired on last stage. Would be a good ERC contender I think, but he obviously lacks the money.

Kubica has had a lot of almost moments this rally.

His last off (after turning off the broken lights) was really scary and lucky at the same time! ;)

Gronholm needs to improve english, his onomatopoeias are nice, but too often ;)

For fans Jänner is and stays very popular, Rallybase obviously was short from crashing especially on sunday (very long time to load page) – which I never observed before.

Only to explain:

a) there were much more fans on the results than in the past, especially from Poland
b) on saturday evening + sunday we gave direct link to Eurosport's system to share data which was slowing also...

I sure believe in that. You can just check youtube and see the Kubica flood there :)

Superb drive from RK, but he was very lucky at the last stage with that moment. As a fan of him as a rally driver since the beginning of his rally career, this (as his first major overall victory) makes me very happy and proud :) Also, great drive from Pech and Harrach, only dissapointment for me was Aigner. I know he had technical issues and a new car, but I expected much more. Also I really liked the Gronholm segments, it would be nice if this wasn't a one-off

Superb Janner Rallye, as always :D

The Mini is working fine and is on par in RRC version, and maybe we will see more of them in ERC over the season?

A question to our Polish members, maybe you can give some insight? When listening to Kubica's pacenotes, they sound like quite advanced compared to some other Polish notes (I don't speak Polish, it's just a feeling I get...). Is this true? I understand a bit and believe they're numeric notes, but what's the scale, 1-6? Also, what might be the two notes that sound like "logik" and "media"?

I didn't have time to watch a lot, but...
yes, his notes are quite detailed, but nothing extra ordinary I think. 1 is slowest corner, 7 is fastest. "lodzik" in translation means "small ice", he has also "lod" (ice). "media" is from "medium" I think, so corner "in between" two digits

I'm not an expert, but I agree with br21. I don't think that there is anything extraordinary in Kubica's pace notes. I don't know why you get such feeling.

Baumschlager said in an interview with local newspaper, that this could have been his last Jänner Rallye. Of course he will continue rallying, but in my opinion after beating Franz Wittmann´s record of Austrian championship wins in 2014 (he has already egalized it in 2013) he´d like to go for a quieter christmas holidays (which he stated) and doesn´t need every point for championship anymore.

Maybe this was Baumschlager´s last Jänner Rallye according to interview with local newspaper. He´s getting older (he´s 54 years old) and wants to celebrate x-mas and new years eve (like many other drivers) - and probably he doesn´t need every point for Austrian championship anymore in 2015 after beating Wittmann´s record this year (my personal interpretation).

as always it was fantastic! but i would wish we get a snow rally back, as it was in the past...

for me the best performances where delivered by (of course) Robert Kubica...he is a superhero....Kajto, Pech, Baumschlager (on Saturday) most surprised performances: harrach (right there after long break) neubauer, tarabus and gryazin!

Anyway, this rally will stay in the books, incredible battle throughout the whole weekend, and what a win by no less than Kubica himself! I hope him great success in the WRC. Eurosport coverage was good too, it was really nice to see Grönholm again.
Sad for Kajto though, I hope it doesn't discourage him/his sponsors from taking part in more rallies in the future because he sure has potential.
