Yep, congrats to Fontes, Pontes and Sports&You for their first CPR win of the season. Fair to say it wasn’t easy as Hyundai Portugal drivers gave Fontes a hard figth. After Aboboreira Magalhães is now P2 in the series just 5 points behind Teodósio and 10 in front of his team mate Araújo; they all got fine chances to become CPR champions and the last 2 events are looking to be epic.

Rallye Vidreiro, CPR penultimate round, starts tomorrow evening on Marinha Grande fast tarmac stages with the title figth wide open between Teodósio (private Fabia) and Hyundai Portugal drivers, Araújo and Magalhães. Fontes (C3) is also expected to figth for the rally win, but his title chances are slim and so are those of Barbosa (Fabia).

Gutted for not being there to watch this epic battle between Fontes and Teodósio; they’ve swap the lead all rally long and eventually Fontes won by just 0.6s! Magalhães was P3 and is now Teodósio main title contender. Nice P4 for Meireles in the Polo ahead of Araújo, who's still in the title fight. Antunes (Clio R3T) won 2wd category and is already the champ. Congrats to all!

Btw, hat off for Ricardo Teodósio; despite managing to figh for the win all rally long, Teodósio was in a real bad shape after a big PET crash; he bravely run with two damaged ribs and eventually extended his CPR leadership. It was later told that Eric Camilli was the passenger on that troubled test although, fortunately, he didn't suffer any injury. Camilli has been here a few times providing tech advices to local drivers.

One of these crews will become the new Portuguese rally champions this weekend on CPR last round, Rallye Casinos do Algarve. Teodósio is strongly trying to get his first CPR title and will debut a Fabia Evo on his home rally; Magalhães and Araújo on the i20’s are still hoping to get one more title on their large CPR accounts (Bruno has 3, Armindo 5); Fontes has only mathematical chances but is on a peak form after winning the last two rounds in the C3. Fabia’s drivers from Madeira island Camacho and Paixão are, alongside Meireles in the Polo, serious contenders for the rally win and can bring some extra excitement to the title battle. First leg starts Friday afternoon.

After last year near miss, this time nothing prevent Teodósio of finally getting his first CPR title! Huge congrats to him, co-driver Teixeira and ARC team, besides Teodósio familiy and his devoted fans, always supportive througth the years. Btw, Teodósio also managed to get a fiancée on this rally, after asking his GF to marry him on the final podium; well done !)

The event was won by Magalhães, with Teodósio always close and Fontes showing a strong pace in the initial stages, before crashing during 2nd leg. Camacho end as P3, ahead of the previous champ Araújo, a bit discreet on this year CPR tarmac events. Marcelino won 2wd category on a Clio R3 while Mota (Evo VI) became the Historic champ and Marreiros (Evo IX) is the new South Region champ. Congrats to all!

Others top crews can also be announced soon, at least for the major events. For Rali Serras de Fafe, besides Tanak and Sordo on the WRC’s we’re still hopefully expecting a Yaris from TGR and a couple of WRC2/3 entrants. It’d be a brilliant season start!

Magalhães is already registered in the series and Sports&You confirmed they’ll run an i20 for him, on behalf of Hyundai Portugal (it’s not clear if a 2nd crew will be entered). On his former co-driver Hugo, the new partnership wit Almeida may be seen as a long term bet. Almeida is a talented and well sponsored 22 years driver wishing to develop his career abroad; already this season he’ll run some ERC rallys, besides the 208 Iberica Cup and the 2wd national series, on a total of 16 events.

Mixed felings about today’s announcements; it’s great to see Hyundai Portugal and its partners raising their investement in the sport by supporting Magalhães on a full scale ERC program but it’s a bit disappointing not having a younger driver using their car in the national series. Guys like Diogo Gago, Pedro Paixão or Pedro Antunes have been struggling to advance their careers and any of them would deserve Hyundai’s CPR seat.

Anyway, with 5 former CPR champs (Magalhães, Araújo, Fontes, Meireles and Teodósio) and hopefully some more fighting for this year CPR with top cars and top teams, we can hardly complain about the national rally scene. Best luck to all of them and to all the others competing at this great rally series.

As far as I remember, he would be focusing on the family business. Besides that, he also started a program that aims to find and develop a new young driver from Chile.

Great list and huge expectations for the Portuguese series opening round, Rali Serras de Fafe e Felgueiras. Besides the ‘extra’ entries of Tanak and Sordo, Gryazin is the favourite for the event win but CPR main contenders and the Heller brothers won’t certainly make his life easy. Big fight also in 2wd category, with JWRC regulars Bell and Oldrati facing the top national competitiors. Gr.N (with national legend Adruzilo Lopes returning on an Evo), local ace 'Mex' on a 911 and the Regional series will add even more excitement to this fantastic rally.

As expected, 'Rali Serras de Fafe e Felgueiras' was a great event to spectate with lots of good cars and crews doing their best to entertain a large crowd. Despite his late off, Gryazin was always spectacular and deserved the win but it’s fair to say that Araújo also deserves it as he was the only one giving Gryazin a proper figth (Araújo only started to ease, for CPR points sake, after the morning loop). Guys like A.Heller, Teodósio or Magalhães occassionaly managed to impress but most of the time were a step down from the top2. Linnamae, a young Estonian runing Fafe for the second time, was flying in 2wd category during the first day but retired on the second (tech issues?) leaving Bell, Almeida and Nunes fighting for the win; Nunes, after a large time without rallying due to a traffic accident, eventually dominate his rivals getting a fantastic win. Nice return also of former national champ Adruzilo Lopes, being the best Gr.N with a Evo IX while the regional event was won by Simões on a Evo VI.

Rali Serras de Fafe e Felgueiras Top 10:
1. Armindo Araújo/Luís Ramalho - Skoda Fabia R5 Evo; 1:36:43.7

Gryazin small mistake is understandable; he was here mainly to get more used to the car limits and kept pushing despite his advantage to Araújo. Magalhães complained about not being able to get a proper setup with the new specs; hope he can do better at Açores.

After a long break, since Rali Serras de Fafe in February, the 2020 CPR will be resumed this weekend at Castelo Branco, with many changes due to Covid safety rules; a shorter route, no SSS or ceremonial start/finish and spectator restrictions at the stages or at the service park are expected to be the new normal on post-lockdown events. Still, a nice entry list with several contenders for the overall and different classes wins.

Btw, nice figth for the overall win, with Magalhães trying to catch Araújo. Gutted for Fontes issues; he’s always fast in Castelo Branco.

Congrats to Araújo, codriver Ramalho and the Racing Factory team for a brilliant win on Rali de Castelo Branco. Magalhães brave efforts in the i20 weren’t enough to beat the Fabia driver while Fontes (C3) ruined his chances with a broken rear arm on SS5; apparently Teodósio was never able to match those 3 and so wasn’t Meireles in the Polo. Great debut for the 208 Rally4, with a striking win for Paulo Antunes in the 2wd category. Some issues for Gil Antunes on his Dacia R4 debut, still enough to beat Teotónio on an Evo X, the best N4. Pascoal in a 911 4.0 Cup was the best GT and on an old SC version José Cruz won the historic class. Next CPR event is expected to be Rali Vinho da Madeira (6-8 of August).

Rali de Castelo Branco Top 10:
1. Armindo Araújo/Luís Ramalho - Skoda Fabia R5 Evo; 54:53.2
2. Bruno Magalhães/Carlos Magalhães - Hyundai i20 R5; +0:07.3
3. Ricardo Teodósio/José Teixeira - Skoda Fabia R5 Evo; +0:43.0

Nice fight at Madeira and a great win for Nunes, the first on his home rally. Paixão (Fabia) was Nunes major rival until the last loop, when his car engine started to fail. Camacho was never far from the two in front, ending at P2 after Paixão retirement. Lopez struggled with set-up issues, being P3 and Magalhães was the only CPR contender able to show a top pace on the first day, before easing to save championship points (he’s P2 on the CPR, only a handful of points behind Araújo). Freitas was P10, winning RGT on a 911, while the old camp Sá was the best 2wd/2l on his DS3 R3, after a fantastic fight with Fernandes on a Clio R3T. Pires (Evo X) won N4 and Antunes was the best (and only) R4, still his Sandero was beat by the fastest 2wd cars. Next CPR round will be Rali do Alto Tâmega (28-30 August), a tarmac event in the north returning to the series after 30 years!

2020 Rali Vinho da Madeira top 10:
1. Miguel Nunes/João Paulo - Skoda Fabia R5 Evo; 1:40:39.5
2. Alexandre Camacho/Pedro Calado - Citroen C3 R5; +13.1
3. Pepe Lopez/Borja Rozada - Citroen C3 R5; +24.0
4. Bruno Magalhães/Carlos Magalhães - Hyundai i20 R5; +34.2

Big fight between Magalhães (i20) and Araújo (Fabia Evo) on Rali do Alto Tâmega, round 4 of the CPR. Magalhães pushed hard on the second day beating Araújo, the main title opponent, for the second time in a row and is now leading the series. Teodósio (Fabia Evo) and Fontes (C3) were a bit distant, fighting for P3 ahead of Meireles (Polo). Great show from the 208 Cup top drivers, with Antunes taking the win, besides the 2wd category. Former champ Adruzilo (Evo IX) was the best N4 and Pascoal (991) won the GT class.

Someone needs to be responsible for stupid decisions... before the rally it was sure the stages will be very, very fast. Believe me, to do 127kmh average with R5 on tarmac stage it needs to be crazy fast stage... Also those 208 Rally4 are super fast cars, some relatively unexperienced drivers take part in the cup, prizes are quite big so they push above their limits and such things happen... It's not good for our sport...

Bartek, I don't want to defend this particular stage because I don't know it but I know a lot of stages here in CZ where average speed around 130 km/h is perfectly possible if there are no chicanes installed (this year there was one stage over 130 km/h in Valašská rally I think but the second run was canceled for safety reason). In Hungary such speeds on asphalt are rather normal in some events. They sometimes got even to 140 km/h. Same goes to some Belgian stages (there used to be at least one such mega fast stage in Condroz at least). Many stages in Ypres are similarly fast albeit you can not see it in the average speed value because of the number of junctions but the sections between the juntions are often insanely fast even in our Czech standards.

Not good for our sport is to make public judgements before knowing all the facts. A full inquiry was immediately launched by the authorities; in due time its conclusions will be known. Meanwhile let's respect the pain and distress of all those involved in this tragic situation.

TheFlyingTuga

Dude, the crazy speeds of the stage is a fact. Unfortunately the tragedy happened and we all have to be sorry for it. It was one of those weekends... I left Marinha Grande thinking if the risks we take for fun are enough to continue with this sport or are just being stupid at this point.

BTW, the crash was on the second corner of the first stage. I do believe that top crews and the PIRC crews would take it flat. The asphalt was in good grip there, however, the police was parked in the corner on Thursday while crews did the reccee and maybe the judgment of the corner speed was not the most correct as you had to pass very slowly through there.

I saw videos from the stages before the rally, I have data from 3 different cars from first 3 stages. I spoke with few people who attended this event and their opinions were similar to mine.
I know how Czech stages look like, I know how super fast and bumpy polish stages look, I spent loads of time on Belgian roads also.
So I have right to make my own opinion about that very sad situation...

BTW, the crash was on the second corner of the first stage.

No matter how fast or shitty any stage is, if such accident happens in the second corner of a first stage it's hardly because of that stage even if that stage is completely shitty. It's much more likely because of underestimated effect of cold tyres or overconfidence or overmotivation or whatever else but hardly the stage. Nobody crashes just after the start because of the stage character. Sorry.

Yeah, I do understand that. The comments were for the stages in general. I do love to race in Marinha Grande, the Mata Real stages are among the best stages I ever done anywhere (they are like Hradek and Liptakov in RBR). However, we have to start thinking when it's to much. Cars are getting faster and faster, we corner faster, brake later. My issue is that we have to start measuring the stages in this fact as well

A 2m penalty, due to an early entry on a control, took Formaux away from Rali Terras d'Aboboreira lead, allowing Araújo to get the win. Araújo is now leading the series as Magalhães was only P4 at the event. Teodósio arrived second ahead of the young Correia, that surprisingly was able to get his first CPR podium. Nunes (208 R2) got 2wd win while Lopes (Evo IX) was the best N4. In two weeks, the CPR title will be decided on the last round, Rali Casinos do Algarve.

That's the Tuthill developed package, isn't it? https://www.tuthillporsche.com/blog/tuthill-vallejo-racing/ Was supposed to appear at Rally GB in 2014, but the FIA wouldn't homologate their gravel kit: https://www.tuthillporsche.com/blog/tuthill-porsche-rally-gb/

Huge shame as it would have been quite a spectacle on the mud! It looked to be quite a handful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APqMUS2J-Q4 There also used to be a Chris Harris video on You Tube with external shots, but bizarrely the BBC claimed it when he joined Top Gear... Finally someome pick that subject.
Our mate JAM asked FPAK about Meeke hypothetical title:

“Kris Meeke and James Fulton line up this week in the Rali Casinos do Algarve, second round of the Portuguese Rally Championship, with the clear objective of winning this summer but a result that helps them win the national title in 2024.

But the question that arises is: As a foreign duo, can they become national champions in Portugal? The answer is that they can't at the moment and perhaps they can in the future.

This question was raised in 2023 when Hyundai hired Craig Breen to discuss CPR. Faced with doubts, the Portuguese Automobile and Karting Federation (FPAK) decided to use specialized legal services to analyze the issue.

The federative body turned to Alexandre Mestre, who is perhaps a prominent figure in terms of sports law in Portugal. This lawyer prepared a legal opinion stating that in an individual sport, such as motorsport, foreign athletes cannot be champions or even winners of championships according to the Legal Regime of Sports Federations in force.

The issue could be resolved if this same opinion did not consider this rule unconstitutional, claiming it goes against European treaties on sport and free movement of people within the European Union.

Ni Amorim President of FPAK explained to SportMotores that FPAK decided to delve deeper into the issue. “We are a country of good drivers who have won motorsport titles in different countries, but we do not allow a foreigner to be a champion here. That's why we decided to contact the State Secretariat for Sport and Youth (SEDJ) to answer any questions about how to proceed to change this situation."

The hearing with the SEDJ was not quick, although it was necessary to wait 3 months and it was clear how long the journey still had to go. “We can claim the unconstitutionality of this rule, but to do so we have to send it to the Constitutional Court and the Assembly of the Republic does this. Pento we have to meet with a parliamentary group, but as we know since November the government is in administration, it is not happening soon enough that this can be accepted. After the Constitutional Court has to decide whether a situation remains or changes. In other words, it is a process that requires some time and administrative work", concluded Ni Amorim

With no prospect of when the Legal Regime of Sports Federations will be changed, and without the same guarantee that it will be changed, the Portuguese Rally Championship advances with one of the main teams unable to be declared champion or winner of the championship if it is with the highest points at the end, but this same team takes away the remaining points.

It is also worth noting that if Meeke and Fulton have the most points and are not declared champions, that title will not be awarded to the team that takes the next place.”

Some thoughts on Casinos do Algarve:

- Kris Meeke and James Fulton completely destroying the field, which continues to ruffle a lot of feather within the Portuguese rallying community, apparently? It seems stupid to blame someone for being quicker than the rest, and the theories flung about are ridiculous but nothing new.

- Armindo Araújo/Luís Ramalho (who didn't take part in last year's first running of this gravel format) and Ricardo Teodósio/José Teixeira closed the podium after some tasty fights. They couldn't quite match Kris and James's pace (notice the +4.7 drop on a 1.38km superspecial), but they were far from slow and showed remarkable consistency where others made mistakes/got caught out by their own car's fragility. The top 3 hold the same positions in the National championship (Fafe's P3, Marco Bulacia/Diego Vallejo, didn't partake).

- Pedro Almeida/António Costa showed great pace, but had a moment starting the last loop of stages and got stuck in a ditch. A slightly deflating ending to a very very promising weekend, a lot to look forward to from them. It was their first rally together too, after Mário Castro's injury in Fafe. Wishing him a speedy recovery!

- In the Promo championship, Martynas Samsonas/Ervinas Snitkas swung first but a turbo problem (I think?) left them on the backfoot Saturday morning, whilst the legendary Adruzilo Lopes (paired with Paulo Leones) and Armando Carvalho/Ana Santos closed the gap. By the afternoon though, Samsonas/Snitkas were back to stage-winning performance and Carvalho/Santis hit a rock breaking their Evo IX's suspension in the last stage, costing their well-earned 2nd place, with Adruzilo/Leones claiming it and Miguel Carvalho/António Reis (no relation to Armando, afaik) taking their i20 N5 to the podium. These two Portuguese crews now hold 1 and 2 in the Promo championship, whilst Samsonas/Snitkas's Fafe problems leave him in P3.

- Like, the final stage in general was a shitshow. Nearly 25km that claimed 11 crews across both passes, and there were plenty that passed by our spot (about 3/4 into the stage) nursing problems. And then something happened further down the field, with the 2WD leaderboards results being amended multiple times. Very confusing, not a lot of transparency from the organizers, par for the course. All I know is from reading comments on the FB (something about a SOS card being shown inappropriately and holding up contenders?), so take it with a grain of salt.

- Sad I didn't see the Mazda 323! Apparently it died on the liaison to SS1 and there was nothing the veteran Jaime Falcão and the co-driver Beatriz Afonso (in what was to be, as far as I can find, her competitive debut!) could do. Hope I can catch them somewhere else this year.

- A few highlights, personally: Nuno Pinto/João Silva wringing the neck out of their C2 R2 Max whenever they passed by; the beautiful tiny matchbox 205 GTi João Sousa and Helena Maia very nearly brought home until it gave up the ghost in that deadly final loop (for real, 70% of the retirements happened in those final 3 stages); Carlos Marreiros/Nuno Duque and their beautiful Saxo Cup! A great showing by the 17 year-old driver taking that little beaut to the finish line.

- To finish off, this was my first live rally experience in a few years! I'd missed this. Sure, not as much info and possibility to live track the times and what not but that's not what's special about it, at least for me. I loved chatting to way more knowledgeable people, hearing the stories, getting a glimpse behind the curtain into what is essentially a family. A competitive, fun, kinda fucked up but ultimately loving family. I truly hope I get the chance to do it again soon!

Ah, my bad! They did seem pretty quick the few times he passed me by, albeit dragged down by roadsweeping duties in those two proper Friday stages. By Saturday morning, they were a bit too far behind to make much of an impression but his improved road position helped him rise through the day. With all the chaos, I wasn't paying as much attention to them, as it happens. P4 in two stages in the afternoon loop (in what also seemed like a slightly slower Fiesta compared to the top Hyundai's and Skoda's) was proper impressive. If the rally were a bit bigger, it would've been fun to see if the gap to Ernesto Cunha and Pedro Meireles could be closed.

Portuguese Autosport brought something to the table... the WRC2 crews are using a WRC spec tyre that is harder than the spec Meeke and other CPR runners are using.

-> Azores Rally postponed then cancelled. So no 2024 event means no 2025 portuguese national championship cause need be candidate event to took part.

-> Meeke's protest didn't advance so penalty will not be revised. Penalty case explain by our mate JAM here:

Meeke and Sordo were being considered, and the second car will be shared by the young drivers.

And still Toyota haven't announced its drivers...my guess is that Meeke will drive the Toyota and Sordo the Hyundai, as both programmes are run by Sports&You.

And a 2nd Toyota should arrive before the first event in Fafe, drivers still not announced also.

I would not be surprise if the Toyota squad will be Bruno Magalhães and Kris Meeke and Hyundai main driver one of Hyundai Motorsport (Sordo, Mikkelsen, Lappi or Camilli).

So Citroën Portugal has not the same mentality as Citroën France, who refused former Bonato's team(CHL)to continue together because CHL had also a programme with Hyundaï(in France and WRC2)last year :mark:

Even more impressive from Meeke:

So… just 4 weeks before arriving to Portugal I had an ACL reconstruction surgery… after a small fall doing some flat track moto. Time was tight… but thanks to the guys at @ortema.de who got me sorted with a bespoke brace.. 3D scan of the leg and made to measure carbon/titanium brace allowed me to compete! Still a lot of recovery ahead, but huge thanks to all who helped through this short time to allow me to drive this weekend !
