I do not like, and find it strange behaviour that cameramen and all others in the area are not;
1. Run over to Consanis car, ask if he is ok and
2. ask if he want to be flipped back on the wheels to try to continue.
3. Warn incoming cars, to get them to slow down.
This is normal rally behaviour up in Norden,is it not further south?

Thank to Tommeke for the places to go ! :) First in Dikkebus cimeterary was nice, extraordinary fast. And just before a mud corner (thank to rain) with jump. Really nice place.
The second at the end of Mesen was a bit more difficult to judge due to the heavy rain ... Aigner was in aquaplaning, I don't know how he stayed on the road ! The corner were full of water, and the fields were full of mud :)

Another stage win for Bouffier - will get harder and harder for Breen to surpass him.
Bouffier really is a phenomen - often needs half the rally to find his rhythm, shows a rather dissappointing appearance in the first half of a rally, then he is really fast and hardly to beat in the second half. One could see this on all his international appearances this year.

It is also normal rally behaviour in Poland, that people are helping the crew and/or warning the next crew. Maybe Belgians can't do that, because in this country you have to stand very far from the road and often behind some fences? I heard that security rules are very strict over there.

Tom, thoughts on Fiesta v 208 in R5?
In general the 208 is a much more spectacular car, the sound is there, and the car is much more nervous. But I think that is because of the bad suspension. My feeling is that the engine of the 208 R5 could be slightly better (but of course I can't give a really objective answer on that, as the sound is giving too much influence :D )... But the Fiesta was much more stabile than the 208 R5. For example on the last stage we were, the cars arrived at top speed (RPM limiter) and then had a left corner, it could be flat out if there's no big bump. When Meeke was passing by, the back of the car jumped half a meter in the air, going completely sideways and he had to fight to get it back, for some 50m after that. Neuville with the Fiesta was probably as fast, maybe even faster, but the car was jumping only slightly, completely flat, no big moment at all and in the end he gained time there. It also looked like Meeke was really "overdriving" the car, he pushed extremely hard, which was great to see. Neuville was driving extremely fast too, but cleaner. Mirek took some times on the stages (for example if we had a long overview for like 1km), sometimes the 208 was slightly faster, sometimes the Fiesta was slightly faster. But regarding that Peugeot still gives themselves half a year for development, while the Fiesta is practically a finished product, I'm afraid the Fiesta isn't going to be a competitive car for long... The times were very close to the times of Loix-Fabia by the way, only slightly faster most of the time. But Ypres-stages are very well suited for S2000-cars (I can't believe a RRC-car with top driver could beat top driver with Fabia here).
noel157
30th June 2013, 18:34
Thanks Tom, very interesting and perhaps Meeke had a point when he suggested that the Fiesta may have been homologated too early. Also the 208 only started asphalt testing a few weeks ago.
Look forward to Mirek's view when he gets back.

Thanks Tom, very interesting and perhaps Meeke had a point when he suggested that the Fiesta may have been homologated too early. Also the 208 only started asphalt testing a few weeks ago.
Look forward to Mirek's view when he gets back.
from videos i have to agree with Tom about 208 being nervous comparing with fiesta.

Bouffier really is a phenomen - often needs half the rally to find his rhythm, shows a rather dissappointing appearance in the first half of a rally, then he is really fast and hardly to beat in the second half. One could see this on all his international appearances this year.
That's because Bryan doesn't test before the rally. He has no budget for that!

Somebody asked for my view :) I will repeat Tom a bit. First of all I have to admit that after a disappointing shakedown (mainly because of the stupid qualification) I really enjoyed the R5. Especially Meeke with the Peugeot was the most spectacular what You could see in Ypres (and for me one of the biggest spectacles ever from one driver and one car). It's questionable how it will be with worse drivers. I believe Meeke and Neuville would be spectacular in any car...
Fiesta looks much more balanced, suspension worked well over the bumps etc. It still dives a lot on brakes like all S2000/RRC/WRC Fiestas but I didn't notice the R5 touching ground by the sump guard on rough places (something very common with the S2000). The engine sounds very boring and quiet. It's a pity because it removes a lot from the overall impression. I noticed people often didn't realized Neuville was already coming because You didn't hear the car from distance (even otherwise quiet Lancers can be heard by banging anti-lag). We saw only extremely fast places so I can't comment how it accelerates or look in hairpins or junctions.
Peugeot is still very raw, You can see provisional details everywhere. For example there was no safety foam in the door, just empty covers. The holes for door handles were manually cut etc. There are several interesting things I noticed. First 208 R5 has angled struts á la Fiesta (all dampers tilted back). I have never seen that on PSA top-class cars. Second is that 208 has several additional rollcage struts which are not on any other car I know neither in Fiesta R5 so it's not some new regulations. For example there is a triangle connecting the middle joint of door X struts with the floor/door sill and seat mounting. Another two additional struts are in the roof. They are crossing the roof V going from the top side-window joint at the crew heads in direction to the middle of front screen top transversal strut. I don't know if You get what I mean but anyway it's nice to see some more attention to the crew safety. For spectators the 208 like it is now is great because the car is moving all the time, the rear axle seems to be really nervous. The car has really nice and quite loud sound and Meeke was just mad :)
I measured three times some distance I could overlook.
SS1 - still almost dry; we were circa 1,5 km before finish and if I remember right the next car after Neuville was Meeke, not 00, so there could not be any overtaking before. If they started in exact minute Meeke was 7 seconds faster there. In our overview it was like this (no other cars close to them to slow them down): Meeke 32,0; Loix +0,2; Neuville +1,3
SS6 - a lot of water and mud, already after Breen's problem so Loix on safe mode: Neuville 42,2; Meeke and Loix both +2
SS19 - dry, some mud, again Loix in safe mode: Neuville 35,5; Meeke and Loix both +1 (the big moment of Meeke Tom was writing about was here)
In SS15 there was a section of fast dirty corners from one to another following by flat out section towards some small jump. Both R5 and Loix reached rpm limiter in similar place. Loix had probably longest gearbox of all S2000 with top speed over 180 km/h (except Solowow's RRC). Would be interesting to know the R5. But here it could have been sure affected by the speed out of those difficult corners.
Tomorrow I'll write more about my impressions from the actual competition. Now I can say that it was extremely spectacular rally in the places where Tom brought me. BIG thanks to him!

And what did you expect? Bouffier is a great driver, but:
1. He had a completely new co-driver
2. He didn't have any tests with the new co-driver
3. French isn't a native language of his new co-driver
4. He didn't have any tests before the rally
5. He has to fight for a budget before each rally this year
6. He switches teams nearly for each rally
Considering the circumstances he did an amazing job! Again! Well done Bryan! :)

Hmmm...I don't agree with that. He is with Delta Rally for one and a half year already.
Except his one offs at Monte Carlo and some promo-drives for Peugeot 208 R2 at the end of last year.
He did and amazing job of course.
I still cannot see a plus in the qualifying when most of the spectators leave after about 35 passes and teams who are not regularly running in these conditions need some time to work on the setup don't get the chance to do so...

The cars and the drivers make it so spectacular. :)
They arrive on very very high speed, then they have the first left one where they have a very deep, what we call "wrong cut" (when the cut is higher than the road itself), and then they go into this long right corner which is a bit slower than the corner before. On top of that it is slightly downhill, which makes it more spectacular for smaller cars too.

So here my thoughts about some drivers I promised. If You don't want to read, just skip it ;)
Meeke - completely mad drive, also because of the car, extremely spectacular
Neuville - very fast but not so crazy, sure also because of the car
Loix - very aggressive but precise on Friday, quite relaxed on Saturday, no cuts if not necessary, lifting the throttle in some dangerous places; the more surprising was his big jump on first Kemmelberg
Bouffier - saw no big moment of him, nice fluent driving with very precise lines, got the chance and grabbed it, the car seemed to be lacking to Saintéloc ones
Breen - very risky driving, all over the place, very spectacular though
Lefevere - almost invisible, great times though
Kobus - very spectacular, looked much faster than his times, had short gearbox and Kumho tyres, maybe the reason...
Solowow - good that he is back in Ford, the car suits him well, he was driving very well, pity he went off on SS5, his car seemed to be set up perfectly, no signs of nervous behavior on bumps or jumps
Paddon - looked really fast but not overdriving, good for first Ypres but hardly something mind blowing, crashed like many others
Aigner - on Friday all his moments went well, on Saturday his luck ended, too aggressive, all over the place, very spectacular though
Vanneste - very good driving, no risky moments, with that old car he is the hero of the rally, the fire on the last stage was a true shame...
Bonnefis - it's probably harder to drive much better with Mégane, again better than his teammate
Debackere - just a shadow of herself, never saw her so bad like on Friday water and mud, seems like she didn't find her comfortable with the new tyres
Hadik - tidy and clean drive, a bit similar like Lefevbre that You hardly noticed him
Tlusťák - as usually one foot on the brake pedal in all fast sections, surprisingly brave on a high speed bump of SS19 when he tried to attack Hadik
Pajunen - real disappointment, didn't look fast at all plus added several mistakes
Tidemand - very aggressive, some mistakes
Van der Marel - much cleaner lines, more fluent style
De Cecco, Baugnet - also very aggressive driving
Boon - something between, I liked his driving but pity of the penalty for being early to TC
Orsák - I told to Tom on shakedown he would sure crash and he did, I just didn't expect that so early, very good time from SS1 is hardly enough
Leandri - very strange drive, still moving the car from side to side, braking early but unstably etc.
Verschueren - pity we didn't see much of him and his car, looked good before the accident
We saw 10 stages of modern cars, 1 of historics and shakedown. Have to say that shakedown and historics were some kind of disappointment, I probably expected too much.

Don´t misunderstand my original posting, I believe he´s one of the most underrated drivers in Europe, only lacking the funds of many others.
