How many forum members are taking their helicopters to Sardinia? ;)

Looking at the maps it's a shame that Monte Grighini is missing but travel from a base in the north (I can recommend Baia Blu Tortuga camping) is much more compact - Even stay near Alghero / Castel Sardo instead of Olbia. Not sure about the Porto Cervo finish ceremony, parking could be a problem if lots of fans decide to go. However, there is a really great little trattoria doing traditional Sarde cuisine in the street heading down to the quay.

Last year, driving the stages in Sardinia, I've seen a Mainland-event: massive crowds, hundreds of meters of road full of spectators... the spectators access in Tergu (halfway thru the stage) was completely full of cars, more than 1 km of car parked in both sides... never seen that before. Stages quite flowing and fast, service park close to the city-center, ceremonies (start in Sassari's main square, finish in Porto Cervo), etc. All much more interesting than in 2008-2011 period... :D

So Nikara is out for Portugal.

I was looking for flights and hotels as well for the rally. Can you recommend where is best to stay? In the centre of Olbia near service park? Is the traffic terrible to move around and thus better to stay at outskirts?
Is there entrance fee for the stages?

The QS, Monte Pinu, on the contrary it becomes very difficult and spectacular, the switchbacks are from handbrake. The most important thing is to go to safe positions, both the public and the media/Photo because as evidence in the final section is very narrow, with few escape routes.

The jump that you put in the picture was in the PS "Terranova", unfortunately this year that special trait will not be out of the race path. The test will be different compared to 2012.

Meanwhile, even Sepp Wiegard confirms that it will be at the start of the race on a Skoda Fabia S2000.

And the spot at minute 06.00? whit the fast passage of Neuville and Tanak, wher would that be?

This spot it´s situated in the Loelle stage, before arrived to the junction at the Nuraghe Loelle, but this year, there will be a strong braking to entry into a autocross circuit and continue to the junction. Will see....

Best regards to all!

You're welcome. The video is really great, its fast sections are the best ones that I've seen from this rally  .
Unfortunately, I can't go to there due to my job. My next one most probably will be Wales (or Alsace if I find who to go with :D ).

Here it is a route from the Service Park entrance to the spectators access road: gmap-pedometer.com (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5945970)
Quite close from Olbia driving these roads, quite flowing and fast: about 45 minutes (not driving as hell!)...

From that point onwards the area (which goes thru the forest with two big hairpins), you can use the Pattada-municipality-arranged shuttle-bus service that brought you to the spectators area. At least I've seen that back in 2011!

I just see the Spectator info and Google maps etc. for PS Castelsardo and Tergu-Osilo, but the official spectator zones are mainly tarmac gravel crosses - do you have any proposal which accesible and good place out of the spectator zones?

MartijnS
29th May 2013, 17:06
At Tergu-Osilo, thats the only spot where you can access the stage easily besides start and finish, but it's not that special we think ;)
Last year we went to this spot at Castelsardo: http://www.rallymedia.nl/images/2012/rallysardegna/Nobre%204.jpg
First real corner right, next to the red arrow at the map. Easy to access via the gravel road that goes left, just before the start. Park the car at some farm or something and walk for a few minutes. Not that great action, but easy to get to.

The "Tergu arena" in the gravel-tarmac-gravel section is quite spectacular. Last year I went during the first pass and it was like "WOW, MY GOD!"

Lots of people, good sideways and various mistakes! Quite good indeed.

This year is planned there a double chicane, soo maybe there will be even more action.

Again, we have evidences that WRC-3, in its configuration, it's another FIA failed attempt. IMHO, WRC-3 should be a two-day format (like Junior) at each event. C'mon, it should be for young guns...

C'mon, it should be for young guns...Rubbish... What makes WRC so expensive is the logistic costs, entry fees etc. I don't believe making it one day shorter (in Sardinia last year the difference was some 16kms I believe?) will make a huge difference in terms of costs. The FIA should make a calendar with 6 or 7 events to choose from, and make sure there is a category with enough competitive cars (in WRC-2 only the DS3 R3T is a competitive car, Clio R3 or Civic R3 are not even close to the DS3 in terms of speed, especially on slower events and on gravel)... The JWRC at least had some competition...

If you reduce the WRC-3 to a two-day format, then it's basically the JWRC without the age limit.

I suspect the problem with the series is the way Citroen is backing the Top Driver program. They have a lot of control over the events that drivers competing for the title enter in, which means they influence a large part of the series. I'm not really sure why Top Driver is necessary, anyway. It feels like Citroen are trying to make their own one-make series, like the Ford-JWRC relationship.

That should be a good solution too. Anyway, it's completely crazy thinking to give a 13-events calendar for a feeder series like that. Would be good to see 5-6 events in Europe, possibly not overlapping them with JWRC.

There is no reason why they couldn't support drivers in WRC-2 - but WRC-2 has a much more diverse range of cars, giving Citroen less control over the category.

It's much easier for manufacturers to build R3T car than S2000, RRC or even the R4/N4. FIA failed to create a reason for manufacturers to be involved more in the 2WD category. Stupid rules in WRC3 are definitely one of the reasons.

This is good example when someone changes something just for sake of it. Old JWRC had a lot of interest, good cars, good drivers who are driving WRC cars now, some in factory teams, they were quite spectacular and not that prone to break downs.

Yes, it is but the competitors are not same as well (for example teams with 4WD cars usually operate with higher budget). That's why You can't say that if something works in one championship it will work in the other. Besides that in my opinion WRC2 doesn't work good either despite high overall number of entrants.

It's the same - on 3 difficult find place which is accesible. As the timing tight i'm thinking to not see the Monte Lerno jump but other place where quicker to go in and come out. (don't have media press plate). I will be first time there so I have limited experience on Sardinia + I don't have possibility to do "recce" as I like usually.

Hi - the Rally d'Italia is a free event so no tickets are necessary :) It's a major factor in the attractiveness of the rally (the weather and the scenery are both first class too)
As for where the spectators can stand the viewing zones are just the suggested points which have better access and some interest. If you have an all terrain vehicle you can access some more remote points. Alternatively you can walk along the stage from the spectator zones, this was the best way to access the jumps on Coiluna stage where we walked from the stage start in 2011

Only speaking from 2011 experience there was no hassle from marshals provided that you respected the event and FIA official traffic. The same for moving out of the stage while it was still live. What did happen though at Coiluna was the access for the car became the stage access for competitors and we couldn't drive out until the Costa Smeralda cars had finished

For you there are two options:

a) use a plane from Torino to Sardegna
b) go by car to Genova and use the ferry for transport to Olbia

Tks!
I'm thinking of driving to Livorno and catch a ferry in the port of Piombino
I've visited some smaller rally events and traffic is always difficult.
there public transportation to see some points of stage and SS's?
Or is it better if I take my car?

From Torino it will be easier to take ferry from Genova to Olbia, but also version Livorno-Olbia is ok. From my experiences on Sardegna there were no problems with transportation to the stages. I dont know about public transportation there, it will be better to use your own car (or find some friend/friends and join them).

So, working on the planning now!
What's the planning for friday from some of you?

I want to do 1,2,4,6,7,8. Don't like 3, so want to go straight to 2 instead of doing 3,4 like last year!
Looks like we can't stay long at the two Monte Lerno passes, but otherwise we should be okay I think..

Where you have planned to go to Monte Lerno stage, SS1 and SS6??

We have been so many times, in the last access to the special stage, a very fast downhill with a open right bend.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/217217_1053209497014_300_n.jpg

This year, the stage finish a little far, only 500 mts. to arrive to cross the river a Su Filigosu.

There is an interesting spot before the arrive:

In the second pass for the stage, we have move to the beginning, where we found the colleague of the forum MartijnS, and we have seen and interesting fast left bend, before arrive to a right junction, all with great winds-turbine.

Tamrazov will not start: Official site of "AT Rally Team" (http://en.atrally.com/m/news/one-crew-for-sardegna)

This weekend AT Rally Team's crew PG Andersson and Emil Axelsson will drive #83 Ford Fiesta RS WRC with a task of reaching top-5 times and successful finish at WRC Rally Sardegna 2013.
Unfortunately, there will be only one team's crew at this event. Oleksii Tamrazov and Pavel Cherepin who already arrived to Italian island and made one day of recce, will not take start at Rally Sardegna because of technical issues with new team's Ford Fiesta S2000 purchased prior to announcing advanced team program and delivered to the team disposal directly at Sardegna from South Africa.

While reading the Hyundai / Pannizzi item on http://www.rallye-magazin.de (http://www.rallye-magazin.de/-hyundai-testfahrer/index.html) I noticed an item that VW have abandoned the hydraulic hand brakes for Sardinia as the cars being used were the Argentina set which were not previously converted. Given the cooling problems experienced in Greece the decision was made to run with the pneumatic version. Here's hoping JML can cope!

I think that the car that Bernardo is driving is here in Portugal. At least I saw a photo of the car being prepared where Bernardo had his previous Fiesta S2000.

Both cars that Sousa is using this year are actually registered in Estonia. PG is using the one that Sousa used in Acores. Sousa has used another Estonian registered car since then.

Bluuford, presume weather is going to stay as today? Hot and very dusty.

Actually temperature should drop a little tomorrow, but wetaher should stay dry. The only problem I can see is the possibility that it is completely calm during the first 2-3 stages. It should get more cooler on Saturday, some clouds are expected and even some very light rain might appear. But that is still far. Lets wait and see.

Sousa uses RRC on Açores, and have plans to use them on Portuguese champ, but federation denied the use of RRC on national champ, so he order the S2000 too (the 2 cars were here), then he use the S2000 at Guimarães and Vidreiro, the RRC are gone.
