Kubica was not pushing because he know's that he's catching Wiegand as they are running only with 1 minute untervals. Definately has a potential let's hope that he will finish the rally and gain valuable experience!

Give him some credit! It's his first time and first stage in a WRC car and AFAIK he has also very little experience with 4wd car. It's pointless to throw this incredible opportunity just on the first stages of the rally. Let's wait till the end of the rally and see if he can lift his speed up.

Toyoda

Would be interesting to know if the Co-drivers notes are the same system, wasn't it a problem for Wilson jr last time

Mad cat jnr
21st June 2013, 08:47
Its down to the driver to choose the system they use, any co-driver worth his salt will be able to adapt to any kind of system, I sat with a Belgian driver once and had to learn French while on the recce so that he could use some french words in the notes as well as English.

The problem is trust, and knowing that they are calling the right note at the right time. I believe Elfyns normal co-driver has gone out to do weather/gravel crew for M-Sport and to help Elfyn.

Mad cat jnr

Also dont forget English isnt Giovanni's first language and he has probably developed a strange accent from sitting in with Nasser and doing Middle East rallies.

A strong top 10 finish will be great for his first time in a WRC car, let alone never done the event before and with a co-driver he hasn't sat with before. He has a massive talent and he'll be one to watch in the near future.

Am I right in saying he's the first Welsh man to drive at the top level since his father back in the Seat days?

Barry Clarke got in or near the top 10, where did that get him? Nowhere!! Evans need to be hammering Kubica who is in an RRC and get some top 5 times in. Read Jerry Williams article in MN, he was spot on!

Mad cat jnr
21st June 2013, 09:56
There is a difference between Barry and Elfyn; Barry was an engineer at MSport, where as Elfyn is there on a development program.

And as said, give Elfyn time! When in WRC2 he is on Kubica's pace, this is all new and the last thing he wants to do is bin the car.

In Finland, if the car works, Elfyn will be with Kubica all the way.

He told that he made a mistake on the first stage, wnet wide, hit a rock and got punture. With only one spare you cannot go 99%. And he is neraly first proper driven car on the road.

In the first stage JML got a puncture and lost 1.56 min, but after that he seems to have the speed and won ss2 and was second on ss3 only 0.3 from Ogier. Kubica is doing some great job, on ss2 he has done 8-th quickest time, looks like in ss3 he has some moment but the car is not damaged and he's leading wrc 2 category, 11-th overall and fighting with Evans for 10-th. Bouffier has won the ss1 but just after the stopline he has stopped with bonnet open. As reported and as you can see on pictures he has problem with engine mount and has to retire.

I dont think Elfyn Evans needs to satisfy any keyboard warriors and their perceptions of how fast he should be, its his data engineers, Malcolm Wilson etc that will make the decision on what they consider his performance after the rally. As for comparisions with Ogier, Loeb and McRae being fast from the start, Ogier had his current co-driver with him and tested his car, EE didnt meet Giovanni until monday and no pre testing, Loeb similar story with Elena on French tarmac in the Corolla, and Colin - well that was ancient history when ciggarette money could ease teh pain in Banbury, too far back in time to make valid comparisons (sadly)
Its precisely the fact that Elfyn hasnt the millions of family wealth that eased Mikkelsen, Ostberg, Prokop etc run in WRC, thats why if he totalled the car trying to be a superstar hero that it will be game over. If at the end of teh rally he is near PG's pace he will have done very well.

Neuville very fast....

dimviii
21st June 2013, 13:19
The steering problem with Andreas Mikkelsen’s Polo R was traced to a broken ball-joint in the front suspension. Mikkelsen had a spare on board and has swapped it. Should be sorted now.

Per-Gunnar Andersson on his SS1 puncture: “It was my mistake. I went wide and hit a rock. I only had one spare tyre so I had to take it easy from there.

Robert Kubica's Citroen DS3 RRC is sporting rear-end damage. “It happened on SS3,” said the Pole. “I lost the rear on the approach to a corner, braking towards a bridge, I pulled the handbrake and we touched a hay bale with the rear. The car is okay.”

dimviii
21st June 2013, 13:20
The stage was won by Volkwsagen’s Jari-Matti Latvala, who rolled himself here in 2012.
“My time was quite good but it was very slippery,“ he said. “I was distracted early on because somebody [Novikov] had gone off but there was no warning triangle. I nearly hit the car. But basically everything is okay. It’s a shame about the puncture earlier but we just have to accept that.”

also for Doon, McRae was a unique case, he was lucky that DR had sat with Vatanen and not with someone like Rohrl. The Sebs too are unusual in that they both along with their stunning talents had decent support when they appeared in WRCs. Are you old enough to remember back to about '93 when a young Finn brought a GpA Celica over to do some BRC events, he got well beaten by an old stager in an Escort Cosworth, he didnt throw the towel in though and ended up having a decent career in the sport.

Business as usual for Ogier, Latvala was bit unlucky - otherwise we might see some fight for the victory. Nice fight is forming for podium between 4 drivers, Neuville is nice surprise there.

I think that Kubica is able to compete with Andreucci and Scandola but like we saw this year, he must finish rallies, without this factor he can't be champion...

On the other hand to be honest level of WRC2 is very low, for sure guys have ambition but they don't have enough speed, of course no offence to those drivers ;)

Superb performance by Neuville to be second overall and second on the Power Stage... this is real progress for him and bodes well for the future. :)

Just need to bring it home now for a fantastic result.

Also congrats to Elfyn Evans for a brilliant 6th place on his WRC debut... a Brit in there at last !

Ogier: "It was a good stage for us...happy...Thierry was quite fast and we had to drive fast to beat him..."

Praise indeed. :)

Ostberg on Powerstage: - Problem with right rear damper, so was very careful. Not easy! Had to slow down to avoid a cow on the stage also! :D

Ford mechanics rewarded for their hard work with an ice cream:

Depends on the difference between the engine of the Fiesta and the engine of the Polo... As a driver Neuville is faster on tarmac. :) But I think we can expect a good prestation from him in Finland as well (regarding how fast he was last year).

From the disasters of Novikov and Ostberg to the great drive by Neuville and debut by Evans... a rollercoaster weekend again for Ford !

Pity the win was a foregone conclusion again, but Ogier is just the best and the others have to raise their game to challenge him.

That's what I meant, if he made similar progress on tarmac like he did on gravel we're in for a good Rally Germany. :)

Funny (or sad) to see Hirvonen is still behind Loeb in the championship....Ford's best result of the season so far, hopefully they can get one higher later this year.

god damn it ,Ogier's good, very good infact i will take my chances and say the title is his this year, he has quite a margain over his rivals, and he will be very hard to beat this year, for now it seems only Latvala and Neuville will be able to challenge him unless Ostberg will be lucky...

Congratulations to the brilliant performance of Ogier & victory, Neuville for the great result, he needs to polish some things and victory won't be far, Latvalla for also brilliant performance after first stage set back - I suspected podium for him is very real after that. And of course the victory for Kubica - amazing, this is only his 3rd gravel WRC Rally (I think). Others on top are dissapoinments

He was impressive in Greece and this weekend again for as long as it lasted.

Tänak was also 6th in his first ever wrc event :) But good solid run by Evans, he wouldnt been 6th by pure speed, but that clearly wasnt the plan, he kept it on the road... many didnt and points are counted after the last stage... so great job by him !

However "star of the race" for me was definitely Neuville !

Not much drivers to compare Evans his prestation with, this weekend. In fact I don't understand what is so extremely good about his prestation. Throughout the event he averagely lost 2,34s/km, he had no big problems, and his stagetimes consistently increased.

Small comparison, in Sardinia'11 Tanak was driving a Fiesta S2000 and lost 1,27s/km throughout the event, compared to winner Loeb. So... E.Evans already better than Tanak? Lol... :p

Robert don't need to compete with local guys, witch do not run WRC2.
Local guys can be really fast at home, lot faster than WRC driver's with similar car.
Some years a go, lot good known in Europe driver's come to Latvia to fight with local's and almost all of them loose to local's. Only one driver was faster(in similar car) - Ketomaa.

Then the question raises... Is Robert Kubica doing a great job, as the media would like everyone to believe... Or is the competition level of WRC2 very low while Robert Kubica is cruising to one victory after another.

Evans did very well considering the responsibility that was thrust upon his shoulders this weekend and no doubt his father and Mr M-Sport telling him to bring the care home in one piece. A long way to go perhaps for the young man before we see his true worth but it's a great start.

Evans needs to gain a lot of experience with S2000 or R5 car. Better not to hurry!

Tanaks problem was his attitude. There was no future in the way he conducted himself. Maybe Evans is going to be easier to work with ?
