Hello there, boys and girls!

It's a fine tradition on these forums to have a thread on geographical bits of info, providing vital knowledge and general hilarity to all concerned. :D

So why don't we give it yet another go? :)

----------------------------------

The rules of this game are:
- The forumer who answers a question correctly asks the next one,
- No boobling!

As simple as that. :)

----------------------------------

Let's start off with an easy one: Which is the most popular place name in the world?

schmenke
16th February 2013, 16:53
Thanks EuroTroll, this forum has had a popular geo thread for quite some, but the fun was recently ruined by a couple of posters. It's probably several pages deep by now.
Hopefully your attempt will resurrect it :) .

Hi Schmenke! Yeah, I had a quick look to see what had happened to the previous incarnation of this thread, and it wasn't pretty!

Maybe we should add Rule 3 to the list: Don't be an arse! :D

No takers, huh? Perhaps I should elucidate.

I'm looking for a name that is most widespread in the world for towns, islands, etc. For example, there are 1017 places in the world with the name 'San Francisco'. The name I'm looking for, however, has no fewer than 1716 uses for places around the world.

What might that be? :bandit:

Yep, it's Vostok at 2,950 ft / 899 m. That was also going to be the trick part of my question because I figured most folks would over look Antarctica.

The other two are Europe - Hornindalsvatnet in Norway at 1,686 ft / 514 m and Australia - Tinaroo at 137 ft / 42 m. There was an earlier answer for Hauroko in Oceania that I disallowed because I had specifically asked for lakes on continents.

Southern Ontario with borders of Quebec, Lake Huron, and Lake Ontario.

Yep, that makes sense, although there is no border with Quebec in that image. I believe it's completely Ontario, although Detroit might just squeeze in the upper-left corner.
North would be to the right with Lake Erie on the left.

YES! This is correct (except the part about Quebec)

Ok, here's something that should be fairly easy. People from the following countries have been playing this thread:

Australia, Canada, Estonia (that's you, right Troll?), Germany, India, Italy, Romania, UK, USA

If I've got some wrong there, lets just go with this list anyway.
Put these countries in order from lowest to highest when it comes to maximum difference in elevation.

example - Hightst point in Canada is Mount Logan @ 19551 ft, the lowest is sea level @ 0 ft.
So max. difference is 19551, putting Canada 7th in the list.

I got the complete list from wiki, no peaking.

You've got all of them correct except for two.
If I tell you which two, you can just flip them around and you'll have all nine.
Would you like to guess which two to flip, or should I tell you what you have correct - in which case you may as well just ask the next question.

By the way, do you always prepare lists in such a random fashion?
