nobody mentioned the 2wd-leading saxo so far.....Paulo Maciel, 13th overall, leading the 2wd-class by over 2 minutes! Does anybody know some history of this guy, or is he maybe still a young gun?

btw: Juho was really lucky, but lost about 20 secs, i think Mikkelsen will make it.
good performance by Sepp Wiegand so far at this very difficult conditions, saw him once in N2-Swift last year, very impressive, i think he can make his way!

Juho is still a top class driver, and will for many years if he wants to. You can't retire just because a younger driver is faster. He'll just have to work more on his skills and fysical training.

Gard

Juho is also probably told not to take big risks trying to catch Andreas. He'll settle for second, but will push enough to be there if Andreas makes any mistakes. So we'll probably se that the others gets closer.

From Juhos comment it looks like Škoda decided to freeze the fight of the top duo like they did last year. Just the drivers are swapped.

He was already falling behind though. IMO it is quite a sensible decision to freeze the positions when you have a 1-2 in the bag. It is better than team orders before the start of the event a la Ford WRC.

The real cure to this of course is to have some drivers fighting at the front with different brands and then the Skoda boys could not afford to slow down. So come on Loix, Basso, Flodin; get those Fiestas to IRC!

If, if, if... What about use it like this: "If he didn't push that hard he would have no accident". Another way to use it for same situation with different result... I really don't like the way of thinking that we remove time lost in accident (by the way it is cca 20 seconds not more). It's not so simple. Clear fact is that Andreas was faster in Azores (SS wins 10:3) and made no mistake.

Mirek, you've got to give people a chance to go "what if..." That's the beauty of sports. It can be annoying, but it's also fuel for the passion. But the fact remains, Andreas was faster throughout the rally.

I think, there were much more than 10sec lost. Logic is simple. If you are 5 sec ahead - you fight. If you 15 sec behind, you start thinking about keeping the 2nd place or try keep to win with possibility to loose everything.

Just saw the video once more, he lost at least 18-20 seconds.

I've been following Mikklesen's progress for about 6 years since I heard Marcus Gronholm was helping him. Its great to see that he has now added consistency to the undoubted speed he always had. If he continues like this he should take another IRC title and be ready for the WRC as a future champion.

He didn't stand a hope in hell of beating Hanninen and Mikkelsen on gravel with an old Peugeot so 3rd was the maximum possible result. He was also very competitive against Magalhaes who has superior local knowledge.

Well I am sure Mirek will give a more accurate answer, however for starters the Delta cars are not the latest evo compared to the factory Fabias of Hanninen and Mikkelsen and the Fabia always seems to have had a traction advantage on gravel compared to the 207.

You could see on the onboards from Azores that driving the Peugeots just seemed 'hardwork' in comparison.

The Skoda really has incredible exit speeds from the slow corners, even on this muddy service. I think the Skoda must have a big lowdown torque advantage.

Mirek
28th February 2012, 16:09
It's complex problem. For sure here the main difference is that those private cars can hardly match the works ones. That's pure fact. Also Andreas and Juho are faster drivers on gravel than Bryand and Bruno, that's second point. And the third is that Škoda usually has had an upper hand over Peugeot on loose and rough surface - that was already mentioned and I agree that it's mostly about traction and suspension.
