34 drivers scored at least one point over the 29 races. Dale Earnhardt dominated the here, too, winning his second FIA Cup by 138 points over Bill Elliott. He clinched this deal by race 23 (Dover) when Bill Elliott finished "only" p4 (Earnhardt didn't score points that day-and Elliott needed to WIN just to stay alive!). 11 drivers scored at least 100 points that year, the lowest since 1981. Big E averaged 15.2 ppr this year, tying him for p3 on the all time list with DW's 1981 campaign. The groups avg number of starts was 28.3 down slightly from 1986 (Neil Bonnett and Davey Allison competed in 26 and 22 races, respectively). The groups avg ppr was 5.8. Their avg start was 11.9 and avg finish was 13.8. 27 of the 29 race wins were in the group, all of those in the top 10 (Tim Richmond winning the other 2, back-to-back at Pocono and Riverside). The groups avg RAF was 21.3 of 29 (75.29%) and the avg DNF's was down slightly to 7.0. The group averaged finishing on the lead lap 36.0 % of the time.

The 1987 Bud Pole Award winner was Bill Elliot with 8 poles.

Congrats To Dale Earnhardt, the 1987 Winston Cup, and FIA Cup Champion
