^^ At least I haven't seen any such service provided by the organizers this year. Start and end points are at the spectators guide, but I don't know are they downloadable anywhere. There are no GPS marks for spectator points or parking areas, so you have to go old school for them.

Maybe in rally guide 2 if anyone had the password...

Why would a Swede be thinking of grilling strong beer?
It sounds dangerous, won't the cans go KA-BOOOOM?

Maybe best they stick to lätt-öl....

Now after you said that, and after a bit more thinking, maybe its better to stick to pripps, much safer, for everyone. :)

Okej, cause if the Swedish boy is thinking of grilling Finnish stark öl now, then what sort of crazy ideas would he come up with once he pours in a couple of beers?

But Pripps, isn't that a little too harsh?

Maybe you guys could instruct the Swedes on a) how to use grill, b) how to drink beer. I mean it makes sense in the context sine the Finns have been teaching the Swedes how to drive fast for about 3 decades now, they used to do OK, now the need schooling, maybe they've forgotten how to grill and drink beer därborta i grannlandet till Väst.

How near exactly? Cheapest hotel rooms I guess come from Omena Hotels, but their hotels in Helsinki are downtown, not near the airport. There are several airport hotels of course, but they don't necessarily meet with the requirement of being cheap.

Hotels just by airport are also worth checking. They are not always expensive. I remember staying in one for about 70EUR/night. I can't recall the name, but it might have been Bonus Inn, they seem to have good discounts from list prices.

If there's people coming to see Rally Finland that are also interested in 1000 Lakes in the 1970s, there's a great chance to hear few presentation on the matter by Kari Mäki, two of them in English.

He is true rally enthusiast who's been working on two books on 70's 1000 Lakes. First of the books is scheduled to be released in December 2010, in Finnish only though. He gives a stage-by-stage detailed tales, results and numerous unpublished photos. It've been nice to follow his efforts with the book which have taken him to old stages, he's been talking to people who live by the stages and remember those times in detail (like showing some rocks that took Alen or Mäkinen or Mikkola out some year).

Just near-by Paviljonki (less tham 100m) at Jyväskylän ammattikorkeakoulu (JAMK) Dynamo-rakennus, auditorio, Piippukatu 2 there will be presantations as planned:

Thursday 29.07.2010

• 1000 Lakes 1973 and 1974 (in English)

klo 15:15–16:00

This is not part of the official program. Further details on the book (in Finnish again) can be read from this blog (http://1000lakesrally.blogs.fi/).

If you are an old rally fan and remember stories from those days, I bet, if he has time, rally professor Mäki is all ears.

Anton Alen cancelled his entry: http://www.maxrally.com/news/entry/no_rally_finland_run_for_ace_alen/

That's a pity, I was looking forward to seeing how he would do in a Fiesta. Even though he wasn't very impressive in IRC he was at least quite good on fast gravel roads like those on his home event.

Those of you who are now desperately thinking whether to pack long underwear, winter jackets and those woolly socks grandma made you last christmas, think again. Weather forecasts are forecasts, and they get more accurate closer to the event, but by now it is forecasted 31-33 celcius degrees and half cloudy around Jyväskylä region until Thursday. That should suit well.

That would be a shame, saw the man around 6/7 years back in a rally in Holland (driving a Corolla WRC), since then i'm sort of a fan but he's doing not that much if i'm correct.
Has to do with.. budget like so many others.
Hope he will find the money to get a start in his big home rally and perhaps more in the future. Go Jouni!

Yeah, If you are not too sensitive to biting bugs and mosquitos, then you can take spray called "OFF" like mentioned before. But there is also very effective new product by same company called "Autan" ("I will help you"). You have to spray it to your skin and then use your hand and cover the whole body like you do with sunblock. It is very, very effective. 4 hours for biting bugs and 8 hours for mosquitos. It costs twice as much as OFF but is also two times more effective. Enjoy! By the way, mosquitos are not that big problem right now. Those biting bugs (parmat in finnish) are much worse :-(

Nasty animals. Few weeks ago I was waiting for a support truck after a puncture in my rear bicycle tire ;) and two of these noticed me, it took me 10 minutes of to get them, for some reason they conciously try to get behind you. And you can't run away from it.

I'm curious about what people expect from Ogier?

Last year on his first outing in a WRC he started slow, then got a bit faster and barely lost to Rantanen to claim 6th - so still not really fast. 4 minutes behind Sordo in 4th to be more exact.

This year he's much faster on other rallies. Most probably also due to car since last years "client" C4 seemed much slower than factory one.

Anyway I read some people think he'll fight with Loeb for the win? To me that sounds a bit too optimistic, though if Fords lack of pace isn't compensated by drivers here it might not be that far from truth. Still my bet would be he'd end 4th at best if nobody crashed/punctures etc.

EDIT:
Also note how seemingly little Loeb improved in Finland from 2003 to 2004. In 2003 he was 5th 2:48 behind, in 2004 (where only PS was faster than him on gravel trough the year) he was 4th 2:20 behind.

its amazing how easily you an spot a disappointed peter solberg fan these days....

judging a driver improvement on the overal difference at the end of the rally is childish.

And as far as the customer cars of citroen Ogier has a different opinion...

Loeb will not win because he doesn't have to....he will fight for 1 day and if things are optimal he will win...but there is no way he will go to war with mikko/latvala as in previous years.

Ogier will be lucky if he finishes the event...i see a crash for him if he goes for the win if he settles for 5th and lower the he has a chance to drive for 3 days.

Actually difference at the end of the rally had something to say in 2003-2004 Finland, when at the end of the rally the differences between places were rather small.
Notably in 2004 Loeb was 4th just 13 seconds ahead of 5th place Tuohino.

But off course, you just follow your standard procedure:
a) read post
b) find the easiest way to flame it without actually checking the facts (note that one of these flames has to include flaming an extra driver/manager/team/nation)
c) quickly post

=> 1/2 of a post is out of topic flaming. 1/2 (at best) something that adds to discussion. Seems like I'm following same scheme with this post... ohh well

N.O.T
26th July 2010, 12:44
the usual reply i get these days....to judge someones progress from overall difference is stupid for some simple facts

1. who was the winner
2. did the winner fight for the win for all 3 days of he was just cruising?
3. did the person who his progress we are looking at was in a fight the whole rally ? or he secured his place early and cruised through the rest of the event after 2-3 stages?
4. was car the same evolution as last year ? was the winners car evolution the same as last years winner...
5. where the stages the same? did the drivers had previous experience on these stages (both the winner and the driver we are looking at)...where the conditions the same (rain ects)

also starting potions, goals of the drivers that year, problems with the car ects....

have you thought these things through before posting that the overal difference tells for someones progress ?

and some other things....

J4MIE
26th July 2010, 12:54
I don't think that Ogier has a chance of winning this one, he still needs a bit more experience. Loeb will not take any risks to win as he doesn't need to, whereas Mikko not only needs to win but needs Loeb not to make it to the end. I suppose it depends if Ford can cut the speed gap to that from Bulgaria.... Mikko may have to take some risks. Maybe Latvala will be told to go for it...

Possibly yes, it's one reason I like the event so much, I watched the 2008 coverage and Marcus was talking about it and I totally agree, it's not just learning the stages and the jumps but how to take combinations of corners quickly that is the key to winning.

It's hard to really grasp just how difficult this event is, I'd say far harder than any other, until you actually go out there and see the stages for yourself. Incredible. I still can't believe what sGronholm drove like, Loeb too.

My guess is that Ogier won't see the finishline this year. Or maybe he will but with help of superrally.

Loeb started the mindgame. "I don't have to win rally Finland".... right. He'll keep the pace up there and forces Mikko to take risks which eventually might pay off.

Mikko has the chance of winning but he'll have to do twice as hard work as he did last year.

Latvala.... no way he'll win. He wants to finish so he keeps the brakes on and finishes on podium.

Petter... he thinks he has the chance and steps on the same mine as Ogier and goes off.

That's the whole rally. Now you don't have to even follow it :)

For me I probably chose Urria because I don´t know any good part of Jukojärvi even though I´ve done recce there a couple of times. Of course we have the last corners of that stage but it´s so well known by now (even for Kimi) so I expect nothing to happen there. :p :

Kankkunen will hurry slowly and proceed like a train. He has absolutely no chance of winning, not even on podium but in top seven he will be.

Plus I always loved to watch him drive, he takes so smooth lines :)

vkangas
26th July 2010, 21:36
I'll say Mikko.

That's because fastest driver in Finland (JM) is still in the cage and Loeb has said he's not going to give give 100%. Ok, that might be psychological warfare but anyways he does not actually need the win.

Petter and Ogier may crash because both are really pushing for win.

Kimi vs. Juha I'd bet for Kimi. 56 km's of testing for Juha is just not enough. Finland is also the "closest to tarmac" gravel event.

Allar
26th July 2010, 22:18

26th July 2010, 22:24
Yeah, but somehow those 300km without off/crash/etc are not easy to come for Petter :-) If you look at the past :-) So, realistically it will be between Loeb, Mikko and Jari

Josti
26th July 2010, 22:52
I think Kankkunen is capable of being the best Stobart driver. I think his limited amount of testing will play a role though. He has to rely on knowledge and his natural talent, but what's the pressure really, it's already a joy to see him drive a WRC rally again, no matter where he ends up.

Oh yeah, and I think this is the only rally where Hirvonen and Latvala can excel this year. I doubt Ogier will take many risks on his first outing for the works team.

Mirek
27th July 2010, 00:19
Juho Hänninen will drive Fabia Evo 2 from Skoda Italia (I guess).

I'm picking Petter for the win.
Faster car than the Fords. Faster than Loeb due to him only driving for points.
Faster than Ogier due to experience of Finland.

Hirvonen a close 2nd.
Loeb 3rd.

I predict Sordo will put in some fastest stage times as well.

KKK in 5th!

This rally will be very interesting for several reasons.
Ford, Hirvonen has obligation to win therefore he will have to take a maximum of risks. Latvala must remain very close to Hirvonen in case hirvonen goes off.
Citroen, Loeb must assure a smooth rhythm to remain in contact of hirvonen without taking too much risks. Ogier should not forget his goal now, that he must inevitably mark a maximum of points for the manufacturer championship before thinking about himself. Sordo liberated from any pressure is going to be able to confirm his big progress on this surface. Petter Solberg will passes or breaks. Raikkonen with more experience risk creating a big surprise with a very good result. Kankkunen will be behind the habitual actors of the WRC his talent will not erase the weight of the years. Excepted from a lot off road front of him. For Juha as for everybody, it is not unfortunately possible to be and to have been.
finally this rally should be very opened for final result.
I hope for the sport this race for Ford would be not se same end as Bulgaria this way should be à great disaster.
That the best wins !!!

Thank you. What is your predictation about Kankkunen and who will be the fastest S2000 driver?

Too many people on the wrong places and shakedown was stopped for 30 minutes. It was resumed by 10 am.
Shakedown period has been extended until 12:30 due to the same reason.

S.Loeb is the fastest so far.
Hirvonen had Turbo problems and has run the test stage only once (by 10 am).

Kankkunen also said that road is very slippery due to the loose gravel. He said that he dont remember when the road was so slippery. It is due to the long drought period and hot weather in Finland in recent months. He dont expect Loeb to take risks and fight for the win in this round.

Petter and Chris did 3 runs at todays Shakedown here in Finland, and at the time they finished they were the fastest car through so far. Mikko Hirvonen did 4 runs and ended with the fastest time through.

- We had two really good days of testing before the rally, and the three runs today just confirmed that, says Petter Solberg. – Everything worked perfectly, so we just decided to stop after 3 runs.

Shakedown stage was 4,6kms, and Petters average speed was 125 km/ph. During one run he did 39 gear changes, at one point in 6th gear for 25 seconds.

My name is Leo and I race rally cars in Canada (known to some as CrazyLeo). This year my girlfriend and I decided to come to Finland to watch the rally. We are actually on our way to the first stage right now.

It so happened that we have booked an appartment with an extra room with 2 extra beds at the place we're staying, because our friends, who were supposed to bring the car couldn't make it (my friend's wife gave birth to their son yesterday!) So, we are stuck without a car... and all rental places are sold out.

If someone is going to see a lot of the stages (get up early, stay up late :cool :) on Friday and Saturday and has 2 seats in the car, I though you could take us with you...

And if you or any of your friends need a place to crash - you're welcome to take the room and 2 beds that are vacant because of my friends didn't make it.

Please let me know, my cell is
+358 405 676 377
OR
+7 926 63 521 63

Because time is short, please call instead of a PM.

Cheers,
Leo

Loeb at pre-start press-conference said interesting words about Ogier:
"The question was what I think about the story: for sure in the last rally we saw the fight between Seb and me and to have both in the team and all this, it would be easier for him to be in Ford. Now he is in my team, he is my team-mate and we try to work well together".

HE is in MY team!!!!

Ok, Seb 2.0, now you may forget about wins...

Back from the first day. We went early to shakedown to get to the place we had recced, and it was totally worth it. It was at the same straight of jumps that someone already posted pictures from. Nice shady place, also, you know, this has been THE hottest day ever in Finland, thought that was in eastern Finland, but we got well along in Jyväskylä region as well.

Ford drivers attack, that's for sure. and apparently it was fast as well, haven't checked much shakedown times yet though. On third runs both Hirvonen and Latvala landed on the nose, but on the fourth run both landed okey. I asked Mikko about, and he said it was how he drove the place, not with setups or so. Other Fords - no competion.

Citroen's did well of course. Petter Solberg was most spectacular, but perhaps not the quickest. It'll be interesting to see what kind of times Sebs, Sordo and Petter will set. In the service park Sordo was absent, at least I didn't any of him. Ogier was like he was meant to be on the factory seat. Sebs and Petter were really relaxed.

Then the S2000s. They come in numbers, but you can tell who are the real drivers. Nasser Al-Attiyah is perhaps a flight pilot, he's jumps were just crazy. For a first timer that could prove to be a non-finish. Hopefully not. Then Hänninen and Ketomaa. Hopefully it'll be a close fight, but I think Ketomaa wins it by far. Rantanen, PGA and Sandell were okeyish as well.

Now some rest, it's not that many hours before start to Urria stage.

Hartusvuori, can you arrange a ride to some stages for the canadian guy and his GF?

I got his message - and if you read this CrazyLeo, this is a reply - and unfortunately I can't. I'm a passenger myself, and like you can imagine on a tight schedule. There are some bus rides to Fridays and Saturdays stages from Service Park, so the situation isn't hopeless, I hope. More info on the spectators guide.

I think this would be a good consept to start the rally on thursday, but instead of only 1 short, they could do 2-3 proper stages.

Thanks to everybody, but we still didn't find a ride.

The problem with the rally bus is that if you take the rally bus, you can only make it to one of the stages.. it's just not enough!

So, Friday we'll take the but at 12:30 to SS8 and SS10. But still need a ride to SS2 and SS4 to be back in HQ around 12:00-13:00. Looks like will have to leave Jyvaskyla by 5:30 am. Will pay reasonable money. If no one responds - will have to take a taxi. We won't give up!

Thanks, Leo
