puncture and game over for Loeb....nice victory for mikko, well deserved this time in a flat out battle in his back yard.

SubaruNorway
1st August 2009, 10:44
No not too bad. He went into the ditch and cut down a tree.
But for the day it will be over for him, as the front of the car looked heavy damaged.

But he must have some off already before, as the back of the car had some damage before.

They talked about someone making a massive jump infront of a camera crew and landing on the rear bumper, didn't get the name but i assumed it was him :p

The first time we agree!!!Don't forget that Spain is waiting and there Sordo will play his role as well....
As things stands out now, the favour is in Mikko's side. Points lead, 2 gravel-1 tarmac rallies left so more chances of Latvala helping his team-mate rather Sordo. Has ever Sordo beaten Hirvonen in gravel? No. Has Latvala beaten Loeb? Yes.

I believe that Novikov is a driver with talent that can stand in a works team in 2-3 years time....in finland i guess he tried to do too much too soon. maybe because the rallies he learned how to drive in russia are similar in conditions made him believe that he could shine in Fionland and didn;t show the proper respect to the event.

well the main difference in the roads is, that we have ditches, when in russia they dont have, and because of that our roads also are harder/much faster, even that the roads look from tv simular they are very different.

I build engines for rally and I would guess the biggest stress would be on the pistons.. These days headgaskets are multi-layer-steel and reliable. Rods no problem. Valves aren't that stressed relative to many other uses.
But heavy load like non-stop full throttle Finnish SS I could see ultimately big heat load and small seizure of piston to cylinder wall (nyppa på svenska, OK?)
Once the piston is scuffed it will soon be over.

synd, it was impressive drive. Shame he wasted all that time in funny cars before finding gravel and what real fun is.

Nice to see Mikko improving and fighting for the win...hope fully he can be equally fast on all events next year and have a good straight battle with Loeb.

Oz will be difficult for mikko...Road position plays an important role there and also since the event is new he must create the lines for the one to follow....also citroen will have the upper hands in tactics there.

Hopefully no accidents from now on and just a straight battle to the finish.... I will be in the UK for sure if the championship is on the line by then.

Nice drive by Hanninen. Grp N win was a piece of cake for him, even against the other S2000s.

I still think Kimi's drive was impressive, despite his roll. Maybe in the Skoda he would have been ahead of Alen, and certainly Tuohino. Hope to see him in action again soon.

Stunning rally ! one of the very best event for good reasons. Gotta see the huge crowd there, the stages, the trees, the speed.

Hirvonen makes it at last. Big congrats to him and the team. Must be a great feeling at home. Loeb finishes a rally for a change, the wheel out of the rim wouldn't have changed the trend, Hirvonen was steadily quicker.

4 wins in a row for Ford, it's going well for them, even a bit better for Hirvonen. Now the pressure is on Loeb. Hope for a thrilling end in the Welsh fog.

Fantastico weekend. Great rally resultwise and great company to follow it not to mention the weather was excellent all weekend. There was a huge rain but luckily it rained mostly at night.

We got to see three stages on friday, three on saturday and one on sunday. At saturday we witnessed one huge roll in group N ( which I únfortunately didn't get to tape ). Sunday we sucked inside information from Ford team representatives and also gave them much valuable information for the future :p :.

Mikko and Sebastien were at their own private level. They drove so fast comparing to anybody else that it was frightening. Sadly the fight was over at saturday but Mikko would have won NORF this year even without Sebastien's puncture. I had high hopes for Matti Rantanen and resultwise he didn't fail ( especially by that 0,3 seconds which secured my pickems win ) but speedwise it wasn't what I hoped. But most importantly, I didn't see that killer attitude in him. Unfortunately Rantanen seem to go in the same "nice-guy" gategory than Gardemeister. God for bid if I ever see a banana in his hand. Then it's over.

Talking about killer attitude, there was one guy above all others. Jari Ketomaa was just awesome with his Subaru and he pushed like crazy. And what more than a credit can you give to a guy who publicly announce his target in NORF to be on the podium... with an old Subaru and a first time with WRC  I really hope he get other chances. Apart from Juho Hänninen, Ketomaa was the best in this rally.

Too bad there really wasn't a fight in group N but Juho still showed how far ahead he is as a driver and Skoda is as car of the others.

Interesting fact was that every time I saw Latvala on stage, he seemed slower than Hirvonen, Loeb, Sordo but then the radio informed his top time. Strange.

All in all, a brilliant BRILLIANT weekend again in NORF and my special thanks to Korpilahti residents of their great attitude and flexibility towards rally guests :)

God forbid if I ever see a banana in his hand. Then it's over.

Kind of what I thought as well. Already Friday he was content with his 5th position saying he wouldn't want to risk it even if he wasn't happy with his speed. But bananas proved to be good at least from spectator point of view.

Talking about killer attitude, there was one guy above all others. Jari Ketomaa ...

Definitely the most spectacular driver of the weekend (I got to see Novikov only once...) and you could see his good pace. Ketomaa and Östberg gave the best jumps; I saw two slight mislandings by the Norwegian, sad that he never made it.

Interesting fact was that every time I saw Latvala on stage, he seemed slower than Hirvonen, Loeb, Sordo but then the radio informed his top time. Strange.

Noticed the same as well, though on Kavala and Myhinpää 2 he was clearly faster. He was driving it safe and on Friday you could notice he wasn't as familiar with the stages as were the others and on Saturday he was clearly a bit under the weather, so I kind of missed the attack he could've gave, but as a result this is of course far better for what it could've been in a worst case scenario.

All in all a good though long weekend. Nine stages + some extra. Me and my friend saw shakedown, Pirelli shoot out and service park on Thursday; Jukojärvi 1, Palsankylä 1 and Mökkiperä 2 on Friday; Leustu 1, Surkee 1, Himos 2 and Kavala on Saturday and Myhinpää 1 & 2 on Sunday.

Only Myhinpää wasn't as good as we hoped, but that was perhaps mainly for the fact we didn't know any of the stage beforehand and didn't know any good points, and also the road for parking was damn packed giving us a more than 4-kilometre walk on the 4th morning.... In that sense also giving up on Sunday and driving those kilometres on Thursday evening would benefit the rally, I think. On Sunday we could collect our bones, lick our sores and just enjoy the feeling what we've just enjoyed.

Also Joonas Lindroos' dropping out of Pirelli shootout was a big dissappointment (well, he went off). It was nice to see how he drove to the victory on Vetomies group F support competition and setting faster times on his first rally in 2WD Golf than this year's Pirelli drivers in their sparkling EVO X's and JWRC drivers, for example on Kavala stage he would've been 17th fastest overall.

Our program for the weekend was following: Fri we went SS2 Jukojärvi, SS5 Palsankylä and SS8 Mökkiperä. Sat we went SS13 Surkee, SS15 Himos and SS18 Kavala. Sunday we watched SS20 Hannula.

I didn't see Novikov but one time and that was at friday morning In Jukojärvi stage where he nursed the broken car. So I didn't get that spectacular element either :)

about 6-7 years ago here on rallyforum was a topic, something like "future top rallydrivers" or something like that, Joonas was then my favorite and still is, 1 Pirelli shootout means nothing, it can easily mean a delay in a carreer, that crap the Pirelli cars are.

nice performance by Rautenbach....crashing in corners is just too common it takes real skill to crash on a straight line...

Well he didnt crash on a straight, doing 130 kmh over a crest and then a long 6 right coming out in the loose gravel, which he did, sliding 50 meters sideways, needs a very competent driver. He obvoiusly couldnt manage that and I doubt everyone in the WRC would have done it too.

We had a great weekend in Finland aswell as you guys! Doing some recce on wednesday, listening to Ford pressconference just outside Ford tent, doing the shakedown thursday morning, Pirelli shootout (with the heavy crash of Lindholm), then start of Krununperä (800 m) with Raikkönen doing wide and a roll of a Fiesta. Then Jukojärvi 2.
Saturday Leustu 1 and 2 and Kavala with the heavy roll of a Subaru N12 at the place we thought would be a cargraveyard....

On sunday Myhinpää 1 and 2. Not so good stage with everyone concentrated at the village of Myhinpää and not very much sleep in the night because of the partying people around. We saw Conrads car after he crashed. Not so beautiful...

I also saw Gross' off in Kavala at the end of the straight some 200 metres further, so we were quite close to each other :-)

I've also followed Joonas' career from the get-go, we are from the same city but we don't know each other personally. He have always got the speed (remember NORF 2004 was it, he was group N 5th on Sunday until flat tyre broke something more fatal), but somehow I've felt he lacks good financial support. In that sense Pirelli would've been good oppurtunity. At least this gave more recognition to his name.

Hi Guys,

First of all the NORF 2009 was the best rally I every visited. Many thanks to Donjipo for the great help.

I have made one big video.....of 50 minutes but youtube only allows 10 minutes max.

Below you can find some videos..........including crashes and Marcus Gronholm

Well. In between rallies it is nice to look a little behind:
1. Kimi´s corner

2. Very nice video with nice jumps etc. To see bigger picture change the resolution of your screen. I think ISC should learn from them how to make videos. I have enjoyed those for many years by now:

Nice vid!

Where was that "Caution, big jump" at 3:36. What stage and where on it?

I really have to say that the Astra seems very reliable car. I know the family road car Astra -96 is a very good and strong car and this one too.

That was the famous (or infamous) Urria jump SS17. We jumped very long and landed hard, but the car took it well. You are right - we love Astras - they are reliable, Opel make good engines and they are tough cars.

Here's outside footage of the jump - unfortunately he stopped filming just before we flew!

You can compare the incar with the outside video and see how far we jumped.
