I'd like to point out also Urmo Aava's pace. He has already 38 seconds lead over all JWRC. He seems to be even faster than Wilks last year in the same car - Honda Civic R3. At least it's sure that this car is very strong on fast gravel.

Kimi is doing great, we have to remember he is quite inexperienced too. I guess in a WRCar he would already be ahead of guys like Wilson, Rautenbach e.t.c.

Kimi said he could have had a WRC for this event but decided to use the S2000. A wise decision to learn with the S2000 and then maybe later switch to the more powerful car, and not make a 10-year learning program with a WRC like some others..

I think Sordo is doing much better than expected.
Really up there when Loeb and Mikko are giving all they have.
Rantanen also very good, as well as Ketomaa (but had some problemas latter).
Kimi took some stages to get rythm (quite logical), but is now at the top 3, which are Hanninen, Alen and Touhino, all of them fast in good (or better) cars and much more experienced.
Excellent pace by Kimi, and moreover impressive learning curve!!

Rantanen is actually entered by Munchi´s Ford World Rally Team :
http://www.wrc.com/jsp/index.jsp?lnk=403&season=2009&rally_id=FIN
He even has race number 10, consecutive to Munchi's regular driver Villagra, but for a reason I can't understand, Rantanen is FIA Priority 2 status, which is for WRC privateers or non-nominated drivers entered by M1 / M2 teams.
Finni
31st July 2009, 15:04
Kimi's learning curve is perhaps the most impressive I have ever seen in rallying. He has got about 300-400 ss kilometres under his belt before this event and is now setting times near to Hänninen who is one of the best in that class. There is no doubt that Kimi would be future champion in rallying and only driver who could challenge Loeb.
I guess that Hirvonen had to drive couple of years to get that pace what Räikkönen is now showing.
Matthew Wilson has driven now five years with wrc-car and his pace is worser than Räikkönen's (considering how far he is from limits of the car)
Tomi
31st July 2009, 15:20
The rally goes quite as expected i would say, pity Ketomaa stalled twice and did have other problems too, but else nice driven by him, kimi impresses quite much.
I think if Loeb want to win here this year he should have a good gap before sunday 10-15 sec atleast, in Myhinpää Mikko will rule for sure.

Great competition between Mikko and Seb and an impressive performance by Petter before he went off. Dani's doing quite well too to be just 16sec behind Seb, though I'm a bit surprised that JML hasn't been able to get ahead of him.

Slow down a little.... His is exceptional but we can not say if he can beat Loeb. For the moment, Mikko is beating Loeb... S2000 and WRC is not the same, and when Hanninen drove a WRC car, he could not win stages, eventhough he is the pace setter in PWRC

This afternoon, when writing the rally notes for Rally Finland 1999 (see http://www.rallybase.nl/index.php?type=result&rallyid=51 ) I was struck by the big difference between the WRC now and the WRC exactly 10 years ago.
This year, after 7 stages there were only 10 cars within 2 minutes of the leader, and those 10 cars were from three different manufacturers (Ford, Citroën and Subaru). After 7 stages in 1999 there were 17 cars within 2 minutes of the leader - the top 10 covered by less than 50 seconds - and those 17 cars were from six different manufacturers. What's more, all these six manufacturers were represented in the top 7 at this point, and all won at least one special stage in the rally! I really miss this diversity... :(

I fail to see the greatness of Mr Kimi.....he is so far behind a failure in the big league, a winner of village events with no competition and over a minute behind a solid rally driver with some limited potential.....i expected him to be far worse but its easy to look good when the competition is so low....PWRC and JWRC are a joke the last few years unfortunatelly.... put Kimi in a wrc and lets see him compare with the big boys and not village people.
I understand how desparate the finnish rally fans are at the time and need a new hero who doesn't quit or doesn't crash but keep things into proportion....

Hänninen is perhaps not next Loeb but in terms of career potential he is easely match to the likes of J-M Latvala and D. Sordo. I remeber that in his first international group N rally Hänninen was faster than J-M Latvala.. Alen and Tuohino were once recognized as potential future rally stars. In the current affair of things this is no more true but those guys are professional rally drivers and Kimi has driven 350 rally kilometres before this. You are really stubborn sick dog who can't just change his once-taken-attitudes. I don't know any driver who has set those type of times with Kimi's experience (Maybe Ekström's second time in rally sweden could be comparable, I don't know because I didint notice him before his third or fourth swedish rally).

Come on man, Alen may have been a disaster in IRC this year but on fast gravel events he and Hanninen are probably better than all the M2 WRC drivers. I don't disagree that pWRC and jWRC are a joke, but the first three in S2000 here in Finland are not pWRC regulars.
Of course, it remains to be seen how Kimi would do over a varied season of events, but for a WRC debut with so little experience this is very impressive.

Hänninen did very good stage times in Finland 2007 with outdated Mitsubishi. Just before his retirement he was consistently beating H. Solberg stage times and was as fast as Sordo. There is no question that Hänninen couldn't match slower manufacturer drivers with some experiment and good vehicles. It's quite an illusion that Sordo's and Latvala's current level is something very high. There is many guys who would do the same with year or two in wrc-cars.
But even if Hänninen would be wannabe and Alen and Tuohino worsest professional drivers in the world Kimi's pace is still superb. Kimi's pace in last few stages was certainly more near to respective limits of the car than what for instance Matthew Wilson is doing with five year rallying practise.

i am not worried at all.....i have tremendous respect for your country and the drivers and rallying without fins is not the same....what i don;t like is your arrogance as a nation when it comes to rallying (which is justified at a certain level with all that success) and the fact that you cannot accept that someone after 1500 years of dominance is a step ahead of your guys and makes them look really really bad. the fact that you see an F1 kid as a potential champion makes you look sad to say the least. he certainly has the money to support a career but not the skills.

Loeb should quit chasing now.....too big of a risk...being 3 points behind than being 1 point ahead and clear the roads of Oz creating the lines isn;t worth the risk in my opinion. He should just keep the pressure and wait with no risks.
The first time we agree!!!Don't forget that Spain is waiting and there Sordo will play his role as well....

Sordo is like a wreith... The shape is here, but no substance. Always the bridesmaid... And the Oscar for best supporting role act goes to... Argh... Is there any character in him at all? I hardly notice any. The guy's just doing his job, quite well though. But like that he's only a wreith... Being ruled by the One... Without his own willness...

Sordo? I like him, he's modest and nice guy, carrying Citroen's second banner in style. It's not easy to be team mate to a french driver in a french team.

I didn't say I didn't like him. Just a pity that with all that stuff he's turning, like I said, into a wreith of the One. And double pity is that as life proves this process is irreversible.

Yes, Sordo is driving very well. If JML would be fit, he'd be past but given the situation I think Dani's doing perfect job.

Novikov went off as seen on Eye in the sky.
He had already some big moments before and then went off into the ditch and a tree.
Both are out of the car.

Hanninen is flying today. And Kimi is again fast in the second pass. He will be infront of Flodin by the end of the day.
Nikara is also very fast...

Not bad in Novikov standards
Went wide on a long righthander and through some threes and stoped in a big one.

No not too bad. He went into the ditch and cut down a tree.
But for the day it will be over for him, as the front of the car looked heavy damaged.
But he must have some off already before, as the back of the car had some damage before.
