If you retire on the last stage of the day then you get 10 minutes penalty. They changed the rule after Loeb got second place in Monte 06 even when he had retired on the last stage of day 1.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I remember, two brothers have never stood on the podium together in the WRc right? Unless something dramatic happens tomorrow, that might well happen this time.
Anyway, it's nice to see the subaru performing decently. Maybe we will se one of Petters famous final day attacks again? 28 seconds is not a big lead, even for Loeb.

If Loeb has the same problems he had this morning, then 30 secs is nothing.
I'm praying for a Solberg win, but a Solberg 1-2 would be beyond belief!
For the first time ever (I'm gonna get slated for this!) I want a driver to retire...Come on Loeb, give us a damper failure in the Citroen and I'll be a happy man.

I honestly don't care if he wins or comes in 4th, as long as he gets his confidence and speed back. It's much more fun watching him when he's properly having a go, like when he set the ouninpohja (spelt wrong, right?) record.

Me on the other hand like the wrc just because of this. In Ralley Raids only the strongest can win. In the WRC though, you need to be good at different things. That's why, even in todays situation, the WRC is worth watching. Even specialists can win something. For example, Panzzi was unbeatable on asphalt for a while. To win the Championship though, you have to be good at everything. Loeb being the prime example of just that. An asphalt specialist who has expanded his skills to conquer all surfaces and conditions. He still has a little to learn in extreme winter conditions, but compared to the drivers who only master one surface, or only high or low speed rallies, he is a true wrc driver. I honestly think the wrc should have even more different rallies, (like the safari) to give specialists more of a chance. Maybe then, in their individual events, they could push Loeb down from the top of the podium, thus making the point difference from Loeb to the other good allrounders smaler?

No matter what people think of Petter, it is good for the sport to have one more manufacturer fighting in the top.
The S14 seems to be a notch faster than S12B, and much more to come !!
Lets see what happens tomorrow, but Petter has said that his morning tacticks will be to try to secure 2nd, but things might change.....
Also Hope Henning will get a podium, he is fast on gravel, but need more training on Asfalt, there he is lost !!!!!!!!!

Like I said, today will be very difficult day and only the leader of the rally will be on the same place after day two. I was wrong! Urmo is again fifth.
Anyone knows why Urmo Aava lost that much time during the second split?
I think that the problem was Sordo? Anyone heard anything from WRR?
Sordo got 60 sek penalties before stage 13. that means he started just before Aava, and Aava lost something like 40 sek on the second split and 3 se on the last split. And from his comments you can see that he said: "no comments you will see"
Anyone can confirm that?
Best would be if both Loeb and Petter retires, and a guy who is a 0 for a driver would win, that might put people to think a bit.
The odds for Henning Solberg winning was 1:60 (at expect.com)
The odds for Petter was 1.18 (will probably be lower in Turkey)

A good day for us norwegians, I hold my thumbs for a troublefree tomorrow - it would have been very nice with 2 Solbergs on the podium.
Otherwise, very interesting to see the new Subaru, a little slow start, but pretty impressive debut, I think. I've just seen some incar footage with Petter, and I think it is obvious that the new car is much more balanced. You could clearly see that Petter didn't have to adjust the steering wheel all the time, and the car wasn't wobbling from side to side as we have seen many times the last year. There is surely a bit left to directly compete with the pace of C4 and Focus, but a very promising start, IMO.
Also nice to see Henning in competetive pace, after 2 days just a bit over 1 minute behind Seb.
I look forward to tomorrow - and the rest of the season!

Day 2 is over with many mixed feelings.
I really thought that today the Fords will make a nice comeback and fight for the win. Seb would make road sweeping and Fords flat out. Not the case. Bad luck for both.
My first surprise was the starting order. I saw Hirvo 2nd in the starting order and I was wondering why. Probably they kept their road positions before yesterday's Super special stage.
I was at ss8 & 11 at Aghii Theodori. Really disappointing to see Latvala being really late cruising to the end of the stage.
This Acropolis has proved to be one of the roughest. The stages were really bad. Too many rocks and too many victims as well. Osteberg had 3 punctures.!!! on the 24th km of the stage he arrived with his front right tyre flat. After that I heard on the stewards intercom that he was missing. He had stopped to change the tyre. Organizers need to search for better stages next year or go back to Lamia area. The whole spectacle was poor, since it became a survival game.
Solberg Peter was very spectacular. Good to see him fight again. The crowd went mad when he arrived at the service park.
The Red Bull effect. The two PWRC guys sousa and aigner were the most spectacular to watch. Really fast and very very sideways. Aava also . Very impressive world class driving.
Day 3 is starting and I will be at Assopia stage ss15&18. Is a nice stage to watch and drive, not too many rocks there.

No, it is not possible. You cannot give extra spare tire in 39 sek and bar codes are checked. He was just stuck behind in his dust. Dani´s GPS signal was lost and therefore team didn't know when Aava reached to the back of Sordos C4.
The only way to change tires is to give it on the stage and switch it back after the stage.. but too risky in my opinion.

Torque is more important than power especially on such terrain(rough gravel), and S2000s haven't turbos, so less torque...
Tom, I didn't use the technical wording in my post, by "power" I meant more "muscles". Yes, no turbo (just high revs :) ) but the car is visually faster.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here.
I've seen nothing that tells me Subaru are back. If you take out the misfortune that hit the Fords and mistakes by other drivers, Subaru would still be in the same boat that they were in with the new car. They've been fortunate this rally, which as anyone knows is a feature of the Acropolis.

Interesting points position at the end of this one:
- Loeb, after his 5th win this year, will move back into the championship lead from Hirvonen (who strangely only has one win :s hock: ...Mr consistent here) by 2-3 points.
- Mikko's about to move 25 points clear of Latvala in the standings - time for Ford to put their effort behind him.
- Atkinson will still be 3rd despite the car seizing up... Although he's going to be some 16 points of daylight between him and Mikko who'll be 2nd.
- Sordo will be one point behind Latvala
Hopefully Subaru haven't shown their full hand yet. Mind you, it took them until this year to get their '06 car to look reasonable!

Aava would be clever if he would let Sordo pass, it would help him in the future, also he has already showed that he is by far the man of this rally.
OK, he did few amazing stage times but has not been so fast consistently? Overally good performance. Altough I believe that drivers like Meeke, Hänninen, Andersson etc. would do at least the same with C4 or Ford Focus.
Interesting to see Aava in Finland.
We've seen that "help" to come no avail for so many times. Of course, the wrath of manufacturer resulting if driver refuses to comply is much worse option.
Or push the works guy to make an error, I dont think that would be so good either.
Would be no surprise if Aava had an "technichal Problem"  Well I was watching F1 and from what I know it is not allow for teams to make decisions that interfere with drivers placements, wonder why the FIA don't apply the same rule for the WRC.

That's a penalty, not policing (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/police, definition 4).
In F1 where all action takes place in front of TV cameras all the time, it's much easier to detect if someone suddenly slows down in benefit of someone else. But in WRC it's almost impossible to get caught.
Never issue an order if you can't control that it is will be carried through.

So after Petter's first good result of the year; who is with me and will say they believe Petter can get third in the driver's championship in 2008?
Loeb and Mikko are way ahead, but then Chris is on 31, Sordo and JML on about 26, with Galli and Petter on 17.
Good road position for Turkey, and even with a good result there, should also get a good psoition for Finland!

I'm really glad for Petter, he really deserve's this result, but I honestly don't think he'll come in third in the campionship this year.

I was hoping for more speed out of the brand new Impreza, but I guess it is not a bad start for the new era. This 2nd place is definitely more of Petter's smart calculated driving than the performance of the new machine, but I hope Subaru will build up more on this result.

Answer is Mikko Hirvonen Monte Carlo 2008 me thinks :)
Petter was fastest driver day2 and car seems stable on the fast bits ,and they have some wery good split times. So I am staying positive also for Finland. They also have more testing days in hand than the other teams.
Petter was fastest driver day2

N.O.T - how can you say Ostberg should replace Petter? That is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard!
Petter is an ex-World Champion, who has just got 2nd in Greece, and would have had many more points if it weren't for car problems - no-one can say things like total electrical failures are his fault. Even with problems, he is 6th or 7th in the Driver's Championship. Where's Ostberg? The only thing where Ostberg is even close to Petter is on snow, and there is only one snow rally a year.
Ostberg meanwhile has finsihed almost 50 minutes behind the leader in Greece, and has shown little to no potential IMO.
Rant over, but that was a poor suggestion.

Stunning drive from Loeb as expected, used his head, also Petter, hope this is a return to the 03/04 Petter, these 2 really showed their experience, just as many others showed their lack.
Regarding times, remember lots of the fastest stage times were taken by super rally guys with no position to lose, or people who had lost lots of time earlier, why should Petter have pushed for stage wins when he had a great result to collect?

You are right, but it was nice to see Petter drive well. Loeb drove well, saved his car, and won the Rally. The mark of a champion. Likewise Petter drove well, saved his car, and came 2nd. With the old car that would not have happened, as he would not have bothered. This drive will have his head back in the right place.
Two good drives in my book. Nice to see a Subaru comfortably in 2nd. I know that others will say "what if Latvala or Sordo had no problems", but they did have problems, and that folks, is rallying.
Good result:

You are very right! Sordo´s problems were his own fault. I saw footages of his tyres after the long stage. He was in the lead and got over exited. He was thinking that he can put a lot of time between him and Loeb and maybe he has a chance to win a rally. But he underestimated the tyrewear with such a warm weather and with clean road. On the other had Jari got the suspension damage because he was bit too wide and turbo problems.. just happens with him.. probably he is not very gentle with his car :-) So, Petters pace was very good. The fact that he was slow during the last day was caused by the road sweeping. Atko set some very good times while starting on the clean road.

Also, on the last day, I'm pretty sure Petter NEVER attended to challenge for the win, the second place was far to important for him/the team to jeopardise (how the h*ll is that written? been trying different ways, this looks the best)! Actually, after the first stage on day 3, none other than Hirvonen of the top boys were risking anything, clearly seen on the results and visually.

Another glorious win for Loeb as per new FIA's road position rule plan :s tare: ... and one Greece rally Ford won't pocket, for a change. ;)
Citroën is closing on the manu champ, it wasn't expected at all there. Will be interesting for the 2nd part of the season after the Ford ballad in Finland.
I'm a bit surprised at how Loeb and Quesnel insist quite a lot about the new C4 suspension improvements made after Mexico.
Sordo still has to learn how to deal with both speed and tire wear.
Refreshing to see a Sub so high in the final classification despite average pace and thanks to attrition.
Too bad for Henning and i don't see any Ford dirty trick to let Hirvonen clinch a podium and get more pilot's and manu points. :talk:
Pleased by Aava, want to see more from him.
Last, Suzuki guys' comittment eventually rewarded them for a couple of manu points. It's a bit of something in Greece.

Acropolis is over and I think the officials should seriously consider to move the event to the previous location with all these beautiful stages! It was good for me to sleep home every night but still this is not a reason I would vote for the rally to stay at the present location!
The stages were very rough! Worse than last year. This doesn't help for flat out driving. Tactic gets in the way for survival!
Good Seb got it! He was fast , smart and lucky! Bravo to him because he know the way to the top better than anyone else right now.
Hirvo I believe has better tactics from his team mate. Or better luck ? I don't know. But he is still in better championship position. Fast and always nice to watch him.
Latvala reminds me a bit of McRae. Flat out all time. Great to watch. When things go well he can overhaul Loeb. And this is pretty amazing , but on the other side speed is part of the factors to take a win.
I was really hoping that the two Fords take 1-2 spots. But was never to happen.
On the other hand it was great to see Peter in the number 2 position. Crowd went nuts when he arrived at the service on Day2. I hope the car is good enough to make a fine comeback as championship contender.
Aava was maybe the star of the rally. Magnificent drive in my opinion. Extremely spectacular wherever I watched him. 4th position is a good result for his drive. I hope we see more of him with this car to gain more experience.
Sordo is starting to produce what he is paid for. Was good to watch , aggressive, but bad luck or maybe inexperience put him down the order. He hasn't won yet with a car full capable of winning. Is time for him to start playing his role in the championship.
Both PG and Garde were trying hard , but the car is not near yet where it should be. Too much oversteer or too much understeer. In any case too much sliding meaning loss of time. Great sound though from the yellow cars!
Mads is always aggressive and this is what we like to watch. Time will tell about his performance , but definitely he knows how to drive a WRC car. One of the most spectacular current drivers. He is young and I hope we can see him with official team car in the near future. He had his share of bad luck on Day2 with 3 punctures. In ss8 he passed with a front right puncture really fast! After a while though I heard on the radio that they were looking for him because he hadn't finished the stage. He had stopped to change it loosing lots of time in this ss (Aghii Theodori).
Vovos didn't spend much time learning the car. Drove for 1st time and he put down good times beating some wrc regulars, he could have taken a really good position at the end. But he had bad luck and had to retire. Anyway we were really happy to watch him and hope next year he will have better luck with the same kind of car.
PWRC.
Great quality of drivers. I would say that the most spectacular was Bernando Sousa. Really aggressive with the car a few cms away from disaster in more than some cases, cost him time though! Maybe Ostberg kind of driving hehehe! But he got 2nd place at the end behind his team mate! Aigner was spectacular and fast as well! Got the win at the end! Congratulation to him and his team. In general Prokop, Haninnen ofcourse, Athanasoulas, Vertunov, Arauho, Brynildsen, Al-Attiyah, Baldacci and a few others who I can't remember now were really good to watch and produced fast really fast times! I thought it will be boring to watch them but now I have a really different opinion!!!
EDIT: I forgot about Sandel. Good good, but the S2000 was never near the N4s at least at the places I watched!
During the rally I've heard many things about the tyres. They were much heavier than the Michelins and all of the crews had problems with them. Some more some less, but they all did. It is estimated that they are 8kgs more than the Michelins. Anyway in all these years I don't remember Ford having suspension failures in Acropolis rally.... I don't know any details though , but I would welcome any comments on that if someone knows.

Well the problem with such a hard tyres is that they are really, really, really hard! If you want to make a tyre without mousse that lasts on such a rocky roads you have to make them very hard. Those tyres weight much more and at the same time they are not working like a part of suspension. Tyres with mousse were much softer and worked as a part of suspension as well. Now this function is missing and suspension gets much harder impacts and breaks more often. The problem is that they tried to cut costs on tyres but now they are paying it back to repair or modify their suspension The worst situation is with PWRC, because these cars are normally meant to drive with normal tyres not with "stone" tyres.
The problem why Mikko was loosing so much time during the first Days and Loeb lost also a lot of time during the second and third Days was also the single option of tyres. last years when you were first on the road you used softer tyre which had much better grip on the loose. Now they all have to use very hard tyre all the time which is little bit like a ski on the ice :-) The results in Greece were very clear. Loeb lost 85.4 seconds to stage winner on Saturday and 133.9 seconds on Sunday that is more than a 1 sek/km. So, don't blame Mikko that he is loosing too much time on the first day!
Villagra's co-driver at Acropolis was not his usual Jorge Perez Companc, but Jose Maria Volta instead.

Maybe you are right. But still I do love S1600s! Reminds me more of pureblood racing car which needs serious skills to take the best out of it. Not that the PWRC serious are easy cars to drive in the absolute limit but I think they are easier to control at flat out conditions.
But as I said before it was a nice surprise for me to get excited from the PWRCs in this rally. I didnt expect it at all!

Galli recorded the rally’s fastest average speed - 100.77kph - though Sunday’s 15.14 kilometre Avlonas stage (SS14). "
Small mistake from wrc.com here as it was Chris Atkinson who won that stage, I think Gigi got it from SS17, Avolonas2.
Anyway congrats to Gigi
He also set some kind of record in retiring on all 3 days :D

Same here S1600 is more than boaring, I wish they would have been driving those after the PWRC in 1000 Lakes.
Boring yes but it is easier to change to WRC from S1600 than GrN as a driver I mean.
What press release, where can I find it?
