Will there be a Formula One 08 or Formula One CE2 for PS3?

Can someone please put me straight.

I wouldn't class these games as anything close to a simulation, but there will inevitably be another annual update this year as Sony have an exclusive license to churn out official F1 games.

The last decent officially licensed F1 game to be anything like decent was F1 Career Challenge '99 - '02 on the PC (not to be confused with the console versions which were done by another developer and were frankly inferior). Since then the official FIA license has been a Sony exclusive and as such lack of competition breeds contempt as they know if they chuck out the same old rubbish but update the tracks, paint schemes and drivers it'll still sell well.

I liken this series to Gran Turismo, a revelation when it first game out but over the years the game dynamics and engine have remained largely unaltered, with most of the changes being cosmetic and it doesn't cut the mustard anymore against a market that has moved on. For example, GT5 Prologue still lacking AI with a single simulated brain cell and damage (licensing issue my arse, how come Forza 2 has full damage with the same licenses?), its 2008 for Christ's sake, GT was the business back in the late 90s but I honestly feel the series peaked on Gran Turismo 2, since then its just been a bunch of graphics updates whilst the competition has been able to offer all that GT was able to offer and more besides, as long as Forza is around GT is irrelevant.

A few points here:

1. I don't think Sony are doing an F1 game this year as their license has expired and I don't think it has been renewed. Unless they are doing the sensible thing and waiting until the end of the season.

2. The Sony F1 games got better every year and I find it very difficult for anyone to fail to see that. F1 CE has better handling than F1 06 on PS2 and the graphics are excellent.

3. As for F1 Career Challenge, I had it on PS2 and the idea was great, but the racing was bad, the AI was poor and the cars handled badly. There were also annoying bugs such as the computer giving you wet tyres on a dry track and vice versa.

4. GT is a fantastic game and the best simulation of driving ever. It doesn't claim to be an amazing racing sim but in terms of driving it's fantastic, especially the new prologue. Everyone criticises it for the lack of damage because that's probably the only fault people can notice. Anyway, Polyphony said that damage is on the way either late this year as a patch for Prologue, or in the full GT5 game.

5. And, the creator of Gran Turismo, Kazunori Yamauchi, said, just this week, that Polyphony are looking at making a Formula One game. He said that "we've always wanted to add more F1 cars, and to make an F1 game, but we haven't made any movement to acquiring the license, so there's no set timeline for it yet, but it's something we're looking at."

God bless them if they do!

Not that I don't like F1.2006, or CE but I believe that part of the challenge is adapting to the game itself. So far I managed to score a single point with Miland out of six races & after many hours of testing. Wish it was GT4 or GT3 quality though!
