The Dallara is designed and constructed to minimize the possibility of wheel to wheel contact by protecting the rear wheels. protecting the driver from impacts from another car also led at least partially to the low nose designs prevalent in indycars. Think Zanardi at Lausitzring.... or not.

Even with an ugly nose Red Bull will be the team to beat, that´s for sure. Their solution gets a lot of airflow to the diffusor as I see it, and adding to their already good down force.

I thought the excuse of this was for safety. The nose of the Ferrari almost looks like a very sharp chisel or knife blade.
Surely the safer thing would be to encourage a thicker nose with a flatter, lower front than this design? Why not have a maximum height off the ground at the front that is much lower than the current type sloping up at a steeper angle to the highest point of the nose at the suspension arms.
I'm not a huge fan of the look of the 2012 indycars, but it does look much lower to the ground than the 2012 F1 cars.Q: Juan, can you explain your gesture on the last lap to Michael?
JPM: I just said ‘what happened, what were you thinking’. That’s all.
MS: I thought you were congratulating me.
JPM: I never do actually.

Of the stepped-nose cars, Toro Rosso has the best looking one, IMO.
McLaren, however, is still the most aesthetically pleasing.

I love the look of the new Dallara Indycar and to be honest, I don't think the Ferrari looks all that bad.

I dont mind the nose.
And a plus is the driver has a nice flat surface for when he gets lost on the circuit and wants to stop for a picnic. Ideal Picnic Table...I still exist and still find the forum occasionally. Busy busy
