Does paddleshift even make the cars quicker or just easier to drive?

In my opinion faster and more reliable gear change. Better for the gearbox itself, less demanding.

I understand the need for faster R5 cars in order to reduce the gap to the new WRCars, but perhaps it would have been better to not increase the speed of those too.

What other changes are coming to R5?

If you're using Peugeot, Lancer & Fabia WRC style paddle, then yeah..

I've nothing against the paddle, but even TC1 & NGTC cars are still using sequential gear lever..

Is it really such a big problem? Loeb was driving Citroen Saxo Kit Car, before stepping up to WRC, Ogier was driving Citroen C2 S1600 and Dani Sordo was driving Saxo too, if memory serves. Was the gap between the World Rally Car and S1600 car big? Yes, it was, but it didn't stop those drivers on their way to the champions league.

Dani Sordo drove mainly a C2 S1600 as Ogier though he did one or two rallys with a Saxo too

For young and upcoming drivers there is no problem with power gap between the cars. In their age, they need to learn basics of the rallysport, consistence, ability to fight for seconds, to concentrate on long events, on long stages. So much power is not necessary for it...

More power doesnt mean more spectacular. But fore sure more power means more expensive runnings costs and less reliability for cars.

Sorry, I cannot see any advantage of making R5 more powerful and more expensive.
