"Two-time World Rally champion Marcus Gronholm has joined Volkswagen as a test driver to help develop the German manufacturer's Polo WRC.
The 46-year-old Finn recently took part in his first test with VW on gravel roads in southern France, and he is scheduled to drive the Polo again at selected tests.
Volkswagen motorsport director Jost Capito said: "We are delighted to have Marcus Gronholm on board as test driver for our WRC project.
"Marcus is one of the most successful and talented rally drivers around, and will support us with the further development of the Polo R WRC.
"Thanks to his in-depth understanding of technical aspects and his analytical skills, he will be able to provide our engineers with valuable input."
Gronholm's last WRC start came in 2010, when he made a one-off appearance for M-Sport in Rally Sweden.
"To get behind the wheel for the world championship-winning team is obviously a great opportunity for me," said Gronholm.
"I am really looking forward to having the chance to work on the further development of what is currently the best rally car out there."
Oh great - Gronholm making the best car even better, that's all the WRC needs ...#M-SPORTER

Is this some kind of way to get around the number of test days they are allowed, since Marcus is neither in the main or second team?

He will work on the car for 2015 afaik, so no problem with the limited test days.
