Lando Norris says he’s committed to McLaren long-term even if it takes a step back in the 2022 Formula 1 season.

On Wednesday, Norris signed a new contract with McLaren to keep him at the Woking outfit until 2025.

Norris was one of F1’s star performers in 2021 with several podium finishes and a maiden pole position which secured him sixth in the drivers’ championship.

Ricciardo: First race in 2022 will be like an extended test
    Today, ‎08‎:‎40
    Author Anna Francis

Daniel Ricciardo thinks that the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix weekend will in some ways be like an extended test for the drivers and teams. A wave of new technical regulations come into effect for the 2022 F1 season, meaning the cars will look and behave rather differently compared to previous years.

Ricciardo is not expecting this to result in turbulent races at the beginning of the campaign, though, as he anticipates that the drivers will soon adapt. "I think we drivers are good enough to be there more or less immediately," Ricciardo told Auto Motor und Sport.

McLaren “proud” to launch real F1 car with only ‘bits and pieces’ hidden.
McLaren technical director James Key says the team can be “proud” of revealing its genuine 2022 Formula 1 car but admitted some sensitive elements of the MCL36 were hidden in its launch.

“I think we can be proud of presenting a real car, because it absolutely is,” Key said ahead of the launch of McLaren’s 2022 car at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking. “It’s the car we’ll be taking to Barcelona.”

And Key is not expecting the pecking order to remain the same as the season progresses due to the new generation cars having “so much development potential”.

“There’s less of a philosophy behind how these cars work, which I think will emerge over time, and that means it’s never too late to catch up if you are on the back foot or, for that matter, drop back if you start well,” he explained.

ANALYSIS: The key feature on the MCL36 that McLaren are hoping will give them an edge on rivals
    Technical contributors
    Mark Hughes and Giorgio Piola

McLaren have unveiled their new MCL36, a car which overturns the recent convention regarding front and rear suspension systems.

It’s an elegant-looking car, and although it uses the same Mercedes power unit as the recently-revealed Aston Martin, the layout of its cooling system appears to be quite different, and hence so is the general geometry of the bodywork.

In an event held at McLaren's Woking factory last night, the team unveiled it's 2022 challenger the MCL36.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown said, "Our Formula 1 team continues to make great progress year-on-year with Andreas Seidl at the helm, and this new era of regulations represents a real opportunity for the team."

"Lando made great progress in 2021, scoring four podiums, and Daniel's sensational victory in Monza reminded the team what it feels like to win again."

The new McLaren MCL36 caught the eye thanks to flipping recent Formula 1 orthodoxy by running pullrod front suspension and pushrod rear suspension – but why and is this the right approach?

The bold F1 novelties spotted on the new McLaren MCL36
McLaren revealed its new MCL36 with a vibrant new livery, but there are as many novelties in the design details as there are with its bold colour choice.
    By: Matt Somerfield

As was hinted in the team’s fire-up video, the car features a pull rod layout at the front, which we’ve seen it use as recently as 2013 but abandoned just a year later as we moved into the hybrid era.

Moving on to aero, the front wing design follows the direction that we’ve seen from others so far in that the mainplane is not connected to the body of the nose. This allows more freedom in the position of the element relative to the ground.

Perhaps most interestingly of all, while the team is being coy and not revealing all the design features on its floor, such as the inboard strakes that are permitted, slightly hidden away from view there’s a very different approach with the shape of the entranceway to its underfloor tunnels that we must pay attention to.

Why McLaren are ambitious but realistic about 2022 prospects.

McLaren are a very different team to that of a few years ago, when they were trapsing around at the back of the grid. The grimaces are gone and the smiles are back.

It’s taken some time to get to that point, though. It began with an overhaul of the structure by McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown and the shrewd recruitment of Andreas Seidl as Team Principal. Seidl has revolutionised the way McLaren operate, revitalised the culture and put in place a leadership structure below him of Technical Director James Key, Operations Director Piers Thynne and Racing Director Andrea Stella that works in blissful harmony.

    Gary Anderson’s verdict on McLaren’s 2022 F1 design
    12/022022
    By Gary Anderson

After the stuttering start to Formula 1’s launch season, McLaren has provided us with the second consecutive car reveal that actually showed a real car.

McLaren has been on the up for the past three years and these new regulations give it the chance to take that next step. So the McLaren-Mercedes MCL36 is an important car for the team’s ongoing revival.

McLaren is also the first to go off the beaten track by switching to a pullrod front suspension. And unlike the Aston Martin renders, it seems it does have pullrods available!

    FRONT WING, NOSE/WING MOUNTING, PULLROD FRONT SUSPENSION, FRONT BRAKE DUCTS, BARGEBOARD-REPLACEMENT TURNING VANES, SIDEPOD LEADING EDGE, SIDEPOD PROFILE, AIR INTAKE AREA, RADIATOR EXITS, COKE BOTTLE AREA, PUSHROD REAR SUSPENSION;

McLaren says Monaco scheme inspired ’22 livery
    by Phillip Horton
    12/02/2022, 09:06

McLaren ran a Gulf-inspired livery as a one-off at last year’s Monaco Grand Prix and Brown says the reaction to that provided the outfit with an idea for its 2022 colours.

“We’ve been evolving our livery since we’ve gone back to papaya,” said Brown, referring to the base McLaren colour that was utilised from 2017.

“We wanted something that was very vibrant, so we changed the shade of our papaya, it’s darker but the livery changes we did last year in Monaco and Abu Dhabi we got a lot of great fan reaction.

Interactive: Compare the new McLaren MCL36 with last year’s car
    2022 F1 season
    Posted on
    11th February 2022, 22:0911th February 2022, 22:16 | Written by Keith Collantine

To illustrate the scale of the changes between this year’s cars and last, we’ve lined up a few pictures of the new McLaren MCL36 and its race-winning predecessor, the MCL35M.

One significant change for 2022 makes these comparisons trickier than in past seasons. The 13-inch wheel sizes F1 clung to for decades have been replaced with more modern 18-inch rims. The tyre sizes have also increased, from 660mm to 720mm, so that useful reference is gone. Instead these images have been compared using the Halos, the dimensions of which are unchanged, for reference.

The new rules force teams to use much simpler aerodynamic surfaces, as can be seen from the front and rear wings which are much more intricate on the older car. The most dramatic difference can be seen from the side of the car, where the hugely complex bargeboards from last year have disappeared.

Norris hoping "everything's groovy" with McLaren MCL36
    Andrew Lewin11/02/2022 at 20:59

Norris admitted that it was too early to know how well his existing driving style would suit the new cars. “That’s a question I don’t know just yet," he told the media at the launch event. "We obviously have some ideas from the simulator and so on.

"But until we actually get on the track and see what it’s like and so on, that’s a question that [remains] to be answered. "As a driver, there's going to be a big opportunity - to come out of the blocks strong," he said. "[That] will always be a good thing - especially when, or if, you're going to have to change your driving style.

“I kind of hope it suits my driving style and everything's groovy," he added. "But there's definitely going to be things no matter what that I have to adapt to and change to, and I think that will be the case with everyone.

Why Ricciardo is confident of a stronger 2022 season
Daniel Ricciardo is aiming to build on his initial year with McLaren as F1's rule changes for 2022 level the playing field.

"[It's the] second year; all the hard work of getting into a new team, learning the team, getting them to understand you... that takes time," Ricciardo told select members of the media, including RacingNews365.com, at the launch of McLaren's MCL36 on Friday evening.

"I think now, into year two, I know everyone I'm going to be working with. They know me, they know what I like in a car. So it's basically straight to business and there's less of the discovery process.”

"I think that fills me with confidence as well, that I've got a team around me now that know and trust me, and it's just fully into the racing stuff, and not really any other noise."

Why McLaren’s 2022 F1 car is all in the detail for now: MCL36 aero analysis
McLaren carefully managed what we could see of its 2022 MCL36 Formula 1 car, but Kyle Forster found plenty of clues to the car's design and aerodynamics

It’s worth noting that it looks like the physical car in the livestream launch has some differences to the digitally-created images that McLaren has also released.

McLaren going from 'strength to strength' but still catching up
    Phillip van Osten12/02/2022 at 14:0912/02/2022 at 12:24

McLaren Racing boss Zak Brown says the Woking-based outfit is growing stronger with each passing season but insists it's still "catching up" with F1's top teams in terms of infrastructure.

"We have all the people that we need," said Brown at the launch of McLaren's new MCL36 on Friday.

Brown's management style isn't to boast about the future while throwing hard cash around in the present. The American says McLaren is backing up its ambitions with a diligent, "incremental" approach, one day at a time, and it's doing it on a sound financial basis

"It’s quite exciting. It’s going to be the team of people which will ultimately get us back to the front.”

McLaren ‘fairly confident’ in radical suspension system
Date published: February 13 2022 - Michelle Foster

McLaren’s technical director James Key concedes the team has “either got it really, really right or…” with the MCL36’s unconventional suspension system.

Unlike the traditional design of suspension layout with a push-rod front and a pull-rod rear McLaren have swapped them around, going for a pull-rod front suspension and a push-rod rear.

This changes the angle of the inboard rockers, helping the aerodynamicists create their desired airflow route.

It is not the first time the Woking team have adopted such a design, doing so in briefly in 2013 with the MP4-28.

F1 teams must break "bad habit" of money spending - Brown
    Ian Parkes & Ewan Gale
    Saturday 12 February 2022 15:30

Zak Brown: "From the data that was provided to us by Formula 1 late last year, it showed that the sprint races did drive incremental viewership, so from that standpoint, it was definitely considered a success.”

"They then put forward doing more races and unfortunately, some of the teams still need to break their bad habit of looking for every opportunity to spend more money.”

"So that created a problem late last year around the governance and voting that we need to go through to see what they proposed, or adopted."

Picture of AlphaTauri’s AT03 leaked ahead of launch.
AlphaTauri will officially launch the AT03, which will be raced by Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda on Monday at 12CET in an online presentation.
Date published: February 14 2022 - Michelle Foster

A picture of AlphaTauri’s 2022 car has been leaked online, seemingly by an employee just 24 hours before the launch of the AT03.

As yet it is anyone’s guess as to whether the team will unveil a real car, the teams split over that this launch season.

Like the rest of the field, AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost has no clue as to where his team will line up in this year’s pecking order.

“[It is a] Very unknown story because it’s completely new everything,” Tost told GPFans.
“We don’t have any comparisons with others but I trust our engineers because they have built two good cars.”

Watch: Scuderia Alphatauri AT03 reveal to embrace Italian heritage
Published by Alex Shahini on February 14, 2022

The middle order Formula 1 team that occasionally snatches podium finishes will be revealing their car today and from a teaser that was broadcast over the weekend it will embrace the team’s Italian heritage. Watch the Scuderia Alphatauri AT03 reveal along with us.

Japanese rookie Yuki Tsunoda and his more experienced teammate Pierre Gasly helped steer the Scuderia to a 6th place constructors finish last season; closing with 142 points, only 13 behind Alpine and ahead of Aston Martin Racing. The former French Grand Prix winner managed a season best finish of 3rd place in Azerbaijan which afforded the racing outfit 15 points from that performance alone.

Today, the Scuderia Alphatauri AT03 reveal is upon us but a twitter post over the weekend alluded that the team was embracing its Italian heritage with the tricolore flag subtly displayed on the carbon fibre shroud of its rear view mirror.

Why AlphaTauri could emerge a dark horse in 2022.
They do at least have the momentum, a stable and intriguing driver line-up and the experience of doing a lot with a very small budget.

The Honda-created power unit was on par with and at times better than the class-leading Mercedes power unit last year. They’ve been working hard for more than a year on this latest iteration, built to run a newly-introduced fuel that is made up of 10% ethanol. Continue on their recent performance trajectory and this could be a real strength of the AT03.

Then it’s down to the aero, but providing the car delivers – and the technical team have got their initial concept right and develop in the right direction quickly, Tost has a driver line-up that could cause quite a stir in 2022.

ANALYSIS: The fascinating design features – and Red Bull cues – on AlphaTauri’s AT03.
AlphaTauri’s digital rendering of their new AT03 shows a very elegant-looking interpretation of the all-new aero regulations with similar key features to cars already launched by Haas, McLaren and Aston Martin – but combined in a different way.
    Special contributor
    Mark Hughes
    14 February 2022

The AT03 features high-shouldered sidepods, which are both heavily ramped downwards and significantly undercut at the front, without having to raise the radiators up (as per Aston) or forgoing the undercut and using the engine cover bodywork to house much of the cooling channels (as per the McLaren).
That suggests the Honda-based power unit may need less cooling than the Mercedes.

Gary Anderson: 2022 AlphaTauri blends best of McLaren and Aston
    14/02/2022, 14:30.
    By Gary Anderson

This is a really clean-lined and functional car. I have always said that a dolphin goes through the water with ease and generates very little turbulence and initially that is what I see in the AlphaTauri.

It is a bit of a cross between the Aston Martin and the McLaren, so there are some subtle differences but no major ‘wow’ factors, which is no bad thing. After all, it’s very easy to have a ‘wow’ part turn into a nightmare that doesn’t achieve the objectives.

AlphaTauri will roll out its new AT03 as soon as Tuesday, likely at Imola where the new car will undergo a shakedown run in the hands of Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda.

The Faenza-based squad, which unveiled renderings of its car on Monday, will therefore become the second outfit after Aston Martin to put its 2022 car on track.

The session falls withing Formula 1's "filming days" regulations that entitle teams to a limited 100 kms of running on Pirelli control tyres.

Scuderia AlphaTauri has just unveiled its 2022 challenger, the AT03, as part of an innovative digital launch. The actual car will make its official F1 debut next week in Barcelona and should look quite fashionable judging by what we’re seeing.

“The new shape and design are really cool, and I think the livery suits it really well,” added Tsunoda during the presentation.

AlphaTauri unveil striking new car ahead of 2022 Formula 1 season.
It’s a typically good-looking car from AlphaTauri who have had a happy habit of creating eye-catching liveries for their cars in recent years.

The Faenza-based outfit enjoyed a season-long battle with Alpine for fifth in the Constructors’ standings in 2021, but could not manage to finish in front of the Enstone team come the end of the campaign.

Even so, there were plenty of positives to take from 2021 with Pierre Gasly yet again having a strong season and Yuki Tsunoda showing good development over the course of the year to stamp out mistakes and add consistency to his obvious speed.

AlphaTauri hope AT03 package will be ‘very strong’
Date published: February 14 2022 - Maria Bright

The car marks a new chapter for the team, with team principal Franz Tost “excited” to reveal the car and hopes this “package will be very strong, following last year’s success.”

Tost said: “Once again, we have worked closely with AlphaTauri to launch our new car and I think we’ve managed to deliver something very special.”

“With this new era of cars, we should have more action on track and a more compact field, which translates into more fun for the spectators.”

Tost doubts that 'dirty air' issue will be resolved
    PITPASS.COM NEWS STORY
    14/02/2022

AlphaTauri boss, Franz Tost is not entirely convinced that the rules overhaul will allow cars to follow closely, particularly at high speeds.

"I think in the slow-speed and the mid-speed corners, the cars will be closer together," says the Austrian. "I have some doubts for the high-speed ones because, with these wide cars and the big tyres, there's always some dirty air behind them. Therefore, I'm not sure that it will be so easy to follow. Let's wait and see after the first test."

Meanwhile, technical director, Jody Egginton fears that initially, one team may have made a better job at interpreting the new rules, and will consequently enjoy an early advantage.

Asked in an end-of-season interview with GPFans if he felt Williams "had stagnated" prior to his appointment in December 2020, Capito said: "Yes.”

"My first 100-day plan was really to listen and to... I've never worked at Williams before and I didn't know really anybody there. Then starting the first months without being at the factory was quite a strange situation, but I tried to make the best out of it and arranged one-to-one meetings with all the managers.”

It’s a massive project, which makes it difficult. We can’t put 100% of our workforce on developing next year’s [2022] car, for example, because we have also to do a lot of R&D projects for the longer term.

Williams boss explains story behind livery change
Williams have unveiled their 2022 challenger, the FW44, complete with a bold new look. The team's CEO, Jost Capito, has explained what inspired the design.

Williams boss Jost Capito has explained the story behind the team's bold new livery. "The design really reflects on the brand definition we have redone last year," Capito said at the launch.

"Especially when you look at the various shades of blue with the diamond scheme that we have in the brand as well, and also the little touch of red."

When asked about the reason for including red, Capito explained: "That's British. We are a British team, we are a proud British team, and that's why we have a hint of red on the car."

‘Redefined’ Williams ‘not actively’ looking for title sponsor
    The Race.
    15/02/22, 15:06.

There is a noticeable absence of sponsors on areas of the car such as the sidepods and the front and rear wings, but Williams team boss Jost Capito said he believes the team can afford to wait for sponsors that believe in the “Williams brand”.

“Not actively,” said Capito, when asked if his team was looking for a title sponsor. “We have redefined our brand. We have very strict brand guidelines and every sponsor who comes in has to fit to our brand strategy and guidelines.”

One of Williams’s key off-season deals was with alkaline battery producer Duracell, which Williams believes is the first brand to demonstrate that it believes in the future of the team.

Williams boss Jost Capito has cautioned that the squad still has substantial steps to take on its Formula 1 journey, off the back of its improved 2021 display.

“It’s not the feeling that we are in Formula 1 and that’s where we want to be. It’s that we are in Formula 1 and we don’t accept anymore to be last, we want to move up the grid and we need the spirit and we need to enjoy that journey. That was the main thing.”

“Then fighting for points and getting in the position that we got some points, and the icing on the cake with the podium in Spa I think boosted not just the team on the race track but the whole company.”

ANALYSIS: Williams forge their own path with FW44 design.
The FW44, which hopefully will go as well as it looks, represents yet another highly particular interpretation of the new regulations.
    Special contributor
    Mark Hughes
    15 February 2022

This is a massively differentiated design, particularly around the FW44's sidepod and engine cover. It would appear the Williams designers have concentrated much of the cooling systems up towards the front of the sidepod (and given it big radiator inlets there) but then shrink-wrapped the sidepod as tightly as possible so that it slims down dramtically further back.

The relatively high front wing visually accentuates just how much priority is being given to feeding the underbody venturi tunnels.

These new regulations for 2022 offer a big opportunity to close the gap to the midfield.

So let’s have a look at the car, which we have only had a limited look at with just two images released from the shakedown.

It’s difficult to see much of the detail from the pictures Williams has released and time will tell where it’s stands as far as performance is concerned, I expected a little more. It’s neat and tidy but I’m not seeing that ‘wow’ factor.

The treatment around the rear looks like it is a little unfinished and the focus on the requirements of what the leading edge of the underfloor requires seems to have been missed.
