Should we be worried about the 2022 Formula 1 car?
    F1

F1 has placed a lot of faith in the new technical regulations making the racing better but Chris Medland says even if they don't, the reset can be a good thing

During the post-season test in Abu Dhabi, Pirelli’s head of car racing Mario Isola told me that the latest simulations and data from teams suggested the new generation of car is likely to start the season within half a second of the cars that ended 2021, and therefore could well be quicker by the final race.

Good News! Audi And Porsche To Enter Formula 1
    by Sebastian Cenizo Formula One

And they'll be backing McLaren and Red Bull.

The report claims that the Volkswagen supervisory board's approval is all that's standing in the way of Audi and Porsche joining the sport, with Audi said to be interested in taking over McLaren assets, including its motorsport division and automotive arm. The report further continues that the diligence phase has not yet begun but that lawyers on both sides are in talks. One of the main stakeholders at McLaren, Mumtalakat Holding Company, is apparently willing to sell the cash-strapped automaker.

So how would F1 fit into the plans? It seems that Audi and Porsche will join the sport as powertrain suppliers, with Audi powering McLaren and Porsche said to be working on an arrangement with Red Bull Racing, likely to commence after the latter's consultancy with now-retired engine supplier Honda comes to an end.

Formula 1 teams could 'play a few tricks' to exploit new regulations in 2022
There is room for some teams to bend the new technical rules which are coming into force for F1 cars in 2022, according to one engineer
    By Daniel MoxonSports Writer

F1 teams could use some creative "trickery" to make the most of the new technical regulations which will come into force for the upcoming season, a McLaren engineer has said.

But the new rules for the 2022 campaign will, it is hoped, shake up the order and lead to more teams battling for pole positions, race wins and perhaps even the world championship.

Those rules will lead to some major changes in the way the cars look, with larger wheel rims and new lower-profile tyres, revamped aerodynamics and more simplified front and rear wings.

I'm really looking forward to it, should it come to pass that Audi and Porsche want to be involved in the F1 world. But what experience do they bring with them?!

Sainz '100% ready' to fight for 2022 championship with Ferrari after best-ever season
    13 January 2022

Carlos Sainz is raring to go for the season ahead after what he called a thoroughly enjoyable 2021 campaign, which saw him take a career-best P5 in the standings. And with Ferrari hoping that they're on the path back to their best, the Spaniard added that he’s now prepared to fight for a championship, if the chance arises.

Leclerc reveals his biggest improvement of last season – and anticipates ‘challenging’ adaptation to 2022 cars
    10 January 2022

Maranello squad Ferrari are forging a path back to their best and hoping to fight right at the front this season, and their driver Charles Leclerc has also been working hard to improve himself and squeeze everything out of the 2022-spec car.

The Monegasque driver missed out on P5 in the standings to team mate Carlos Sainz last season, the Spanish racer having enjoyed a stellar debut season at the Scuderia. But Leclerc noted that he had worked on a significant 'weakness' last year – which should put him in good stead for 2022.

Audi want to ‘surprise’ motorsport as F1 rumours swirl
Audi have insisted that they are focussed on the Dakar Rally and 24 Hours of Le Mans

    Harry Latham-Coyle
    13 Jan 2022

Audi are out to “surprise” with their plans in motorsport but have insisted they remain focussed on the Dakar Rally and 24 Hours of Le Mans as rumours swirl over a possible entry on to the Formula 1 grid.

Oliver Hoffmann, Audi’s Chief Development Officer, did not directly deny Audi’s F1 plans, but claimed their attention remains fixed on more immediate projects, like the ongoing Dakar Rally, and next year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Audi tells FIA it intends to confirm F1 entry early next year

21st December 2021, 23:39 | Written by Dieter Rencken and Keith Collantine

Audi board chairman Markus Duesmann and Audi Technical Development board member Oliver Hoffmann indicated the manufacturer is satisfied with the progress the FIA has made with new technical regulations for the 2026 power units.

In a letter sent on Tuesday Duesmann and Hoffmann told F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and outgoing FIA president Jean Todt they believe the draft regulations offer a fair compromise for newcomers and existing competitors, as well as meeting the objectives agreed for the new power units.

In an apparent swipe to rivals Mercedes, Duesmann and Hoffmann opened their the letter – seen by RaceFans – by congratulating Todt on what it regarded as a fair conclusion to this year’s Formula 1 championship. They referred specifically to the final lap, on which Max Verstappen passed Lewis Hamilton to clinch the title following a controversial restart, which Mercedes considered appealing against for four days before backing down.

F1: PORSCHE AND AUDI’S ENTRY BECOMING INCREASINGLY CLEAR
    Lena Ferle
    13 Jan 2022

With the new regulations and engine developments from 2026, Formula 1 is attracting new interested parties on board. In particular, the German VW Group has been involved in talks for an entry for some time. There is further information on an entry with its Audi and Porsche brands.

Initially, Audi and Porsche wanted to enter F1 as engine suppliers persisted. However, rumours kept coming up that the two companies wanted to set up or buy their own racing teams.

Audi has already had preliminary talks with McLaren. On the report of the FAZ, there is even an offer to buy the team.

Audi and Porsche set to join F1 in 2026, powering McLaren and Red Bull
    Published: 07 January 2022

In addition to a couple of new logos on the grid – which we’ll get to later – this will result in substantial economies of scale between Lambo, McLaren and Porsche. This would create the world´s strongest sports car group.

    How would Audi benefit?
Audi and Porsche are likely to fuse the F1 R&D work while retaining different set-ups and visual identities. One scenario suggests that Audi/McLaren will partner with Porsche/Red Bull to fight Ferrari and Mercedes in the upcoming hybrid/sustainable fuels era.

This could be a profitable enterprise for Audi and Volkswagen Group. Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius revealed last year that the AMG Petronas F1 commitment creates an annual media value of $1.5bn - and rising. Since Audi has pulled out of DTM and Formula E, the return on investment looks potentially sound.

Aston Martin has announced a launch date of Feb 10 for the AMR22.

I'm expecting with the regs changes that the cars we see at launch are even less like the cars will appear on track in recent years. They are going to hide anything they can for this first season with the new cars. Maybe they should just put a road car out for the launch and leave us all guessing until testing.

Ultimately, after a comedy of controversial decisions, Max Verstappen roared past Hamilton on the final lap to snatch the glory right at the last.

Hamilton was left incredibly perturbed by what happened and is yet to decide on whether or not he wants to continue on in the sport he has given so much to.

Toto Wolff and his team would be left without their number one driver and would have to scramble to fill his seat before the season begins. So who could they bring in should Hamilton choose to walk away? Here are five potential options… Lando Norris, Esteban Ocon, Nico Hulkenberg, Nyck De Vries, Oscar Piastri …

Martin Brundle urges Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes to reconsider Michael Masi sack stance
MICHAEL MASI'S F1 future remains in doubt with Mercedes demanding the removal of the FIA race director.

    By FRASER WATSON
    17:15, Fri, Jan 14, 2022

F1 pundit Martin Brundle has warned Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton to "be careful what you wish for," as they push for the removal of FIA race director Michael Masi. The Australian was central to the controversy that overshadowed the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which culminated in Max Verstappen overtaking Hamilton on the final lap to take the chequered flag - and the F1 world title.

Now Brundle, who was commentating for Sky Sports has the drama unfolded in Abu Dhabi, has said "He's [Masi] clearly only got one life left hasn't he, and I don't know if that's tenable all round.

"But who would you replace him with? Be careful what you wish for. And what I absolutely know for sure is that changing Michael Masi will not fix the problem."

Masi: Everyone wanted sacking, now gets full backing
    January 15, 2022 · by thejudge13

Everyone wants HIS dismissal – now he suddenly gets backing. Hamilton fans, Mercedes, Toto Wolff – they all had one wish after last season: the dismissal of Michael Masi as Formula 1 race director. The Australian had gambled away his sympathies from those particular demographics.

An ex-Formula 1 driver stands by Masi’s side One is a former racing driver and current TV pundit Martin Brundle.

“What I know with absolute certainty is that a change of Michael Masi will not solve the problem,” he tells British “Sky”.

According to him, managing 23 races a year is too much for one person. “It’s far too big a task,” Brundle said.

Why Ferrari's Formula 1 win drought will end in 2022
    F1
    January 14th 2022
A sleeping giant in recent seasons, Andrew Frankel reckons Ferrari will thrive under the new 2022 F1 regulations
    Author Andrew Frankel

So what do I think will happen to Ferrari in 2022? Actually I think the most likely outcome is that they’ll come third in the Constructors again. The difference will be that instead of scoring barely half the points of the winning team as in 2021, the Scuderia will be far closer, close enough even to win races on merit alone at circuits that suit their car, close enough to capitalise if, for whatever reason, one or other of its chief rivals fails to gets to grip with the new regs. Let’s remember also that Ferrari has not won a race since Singapore in 2019, a drought I predict is shortly to end.

Formula 1: Lewis Hamilton announcement coming soon?
    by Asher Fair
    15th Jan 2022

Based on his most recent public comments, we should be expecting to hear from Lewis Hamilton in the near future as it pertains to his Formula 1 future.

Hamilton hasn’t made public comments since his post-race interview with Sky Sports in the immediate aftermath of the controversial finish.

Preseason testing is scheduled to begin at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Monday, February 21 and run through Friday, February 25, and more testing is scheduled to take place at Bahrain International Circuit from Thursday, March 10 to Saturday, March 12.

Some sources have already indicated that he will return, while others have indicated not only that he will not, but that Mercedes are already seeking out a potential replacement. Bottom line, none of us really know anything at this point, but based on his most recent public comments, that should change in the near future.

Wolff admits Verstappen is a ‘worthy world champion,’ says Masi ‘blew fuses’
Max Verstappen passed Sir Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to claim his maiden world title.
    by Rob Kershaw
    15 January 202215 January 2022

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has no problem accepting that Max Verstappen deserved his championship in 2021, stressing that race control is what cost Sir Lewis Hamilton his eighth Formula 1 title.

Wolff believes that the events last month will leave a legacy on the sport, saying that the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix “will never be forgotten,” in an interview with Austria’s Kronen Zeitung newspaper.

The 50-year-old labelled the final lap of the race “outrageous” and thinks that it would be a travesty if that is what makes the seven-time world champion leave the sport.

However, Hamilton is reportedly considering retiring from Formula 1 following the heartbreak he suffered at the end of last season, and Wolff has made no assurances that the Brit will be racing in the sport in 2022.

Wolff 'different kind of animal' from other bosses - Horner
    Andrew Lewin16/01/2022 at 08:28

Red Bull team principal says that his Mercedes counterpart Toto Wolff has a very different approach to his role from other bosses when it comes to the inevitable in-season mind games.

“When we were fighting Sebastian Vettel against Fernando Alonso for the World Championship, Stefano Domenicali was the team boss of Ferrari," he told Formule 1 magazine.

“At the time, the competition was of a different, let’s say, ‘gentleman’s level’," Horner suggested. "[But] last year was intense both on and off the track.

"Toto plays it differently, he’s a different kind of animal," he added.

“Do I like it? No. Is it part of the sport? Yes,” he accepted. “I don’t know if I’m good at it.

They will work alongside the established design and aero team, with Ferrari adopting “the same innovative approach that underpinned the design of the SF70H and its successor, both of which were capable of challenging Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes for much of the season”.

Brundle believes Wolff’s threats are lies
    January 16, 2022 · by thejudge13

What to make of Toto Wolff’s latest statements on Friday regarding Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 future? The Austrian Toto Wolff still doubts that his driver will return to the grid in Formula 1. He hopes, he wants to believe, but he does not want to say that it is a certainty at this stage, Martin Brundle doesn’t believe this rhetoric.

For former F1 driver Martin Brundle says he has no reason to stop:

“To be honest, I don’t believe in Toto’s talk in the media. I don’t believe it at all. He’s just continuing to put pressure on the FIA…”

‘It starts to eat you inside’ – Bottas opens up on pressure from Wolff
Valtteri Bottas has signed with Alfa Romeo for the 2022 season after five years of being Sir Lewis Hamilton's team-mate at Mercedes.
    by Rob Kershaw
    15 January 2022

Valtteri Bottas has indicated that his persistent one-year deals at Mercedes began to affect his “well-being” during his five-year stay at the serial Constructors’ Champions.

Wolff also once labelled Bottas a “wingman,” which the 32-year-old said “hurts.”

The most notable instance of this arrived at the 2018 Russian Grand Prix, when Bottas looked on for victory before being told to allow Hamilton through so he could claim the additional points, as he was battling then-Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel for the championship.

“Toto says that pressure makes diamonds. I think, in a way, it’s true. But there’s also a limit. There’s a limit how long you can maintain that for your own well-being.”

Binotto targets wins but Ferrari F1 title bid unlikely in 2022
    17 January 2022

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto is targeting wins but doubts a potential championship bid is possible in 2022.

The Scuderia is back on the upward trend, finishing third in the Constructors' standings last year after a back and forth battle with old rivals McLaren.

"What will be important for us this year is to keep on growing and to further reduce the gap to the competitors," said Binotto via The Race on Ferrari's ambitions.

Red Bull to supply Mercedes F1 power unit customers
    January 17, 2022 · by thejudge13

Firstly, Wolff and Mercedes bullying tactics over ‘refereeing decisions” in Abu Dhabi have clearly cut no mustard with the FIA despite the Stuttgart owned teams threats to drag the world motorsports body through the legal mire for most of 2022.

Sources in Stuttgart suggest Daimler Benz will sell their remaining 30% during 2022, and insist the new owners change the team name for 2023, dropping the Mercedes Benz brand.

Having taken control of Honda’s UK based performance engine unit, Red Bull have become supplier of F1 power units, and in effect become a full works F1 outfit.

Sources in the team suggest to TJ13 that from 2023, they are prepared to supply power units not only to Alpha Tauri, but a further 2 customer outfits. This could be extended to a further customer team in 2024.

This collapses the grip Mercedes AMG F1 have, supplying more power units than any other manufacturer and clearly weakens their negotiating strength with the FIA on design and sporting regulations.

F1 moves to ban popular tradition during race build-up

F1 will stop race promoters from putting on part of their pre-race displays during the 2022 season and beyond.

For instance, Monza frequently has flyovers of the Italian Air Force before the Italian Grand Prix, while the Red Arrows, part of the Royal Air Force, entertain the crowds at Silverstone ahead of the British Grand Prix.

However, in an email sent by F1 to race promoters, seen by RacingNews365.com, displays of military aviation are no longer permitted.

Hamilton, Verstappen, Vettel, Alonso, Russell: F1 driver salaries for 2022 revealed
    By Sean Guest
    Published: 19 Jan 2022, 15:22

The upcoming campaign will see the FIA introduce significant rule changes that affect the way that cars behave, resulting in closer, and most likely more exciting, racing than in 2021.

As they do most seasons, the drivers’ salaries are set to change, too. However, with only a handful of driver moves this winter, this year’s changes are relatively minor compared to those of previous seasons.

While the Dutch driver pipped his British counterpart to the post in one of the most controversial endings to a season in memory in 2021, Hamilton will be paid $15 million more than his rival in 2022, earning a salary of $40 million compared to Verstappen’s $25 million, assuming he decides to continue racing that is.
