A legendary Flying Finn and a name a heard from the beginning of my rally interest as a kid in the 1970's. He was always fighting at the front and became synonymous with British rallying and the Lombard RAC Rally.
First stage I ever went to was famous for one of the great incidents in 1983 when he took a wheel off:
He still fought back to finish 2nd o/a.
One of the greats of the sport and in my Top 5 of all-time. RIP Hannu.#M-SPORTER

I’m not one for ‘heroes’, but Hannu Mikkola is as close to it for me as anyone. We Brits loved watching him and Vatanen and the like in our Open Championship.
Top guy.
RIP

I met Hannu Mikkola in 2018 at a rally in upper Michigan. It was also a gathering for some Detroit-based 80s Audi fans and a few expats with replica Escorts that managed to convince him to come and drive one as an exhibition car through some stages.
At lunch someone asked what was his favorite rally car to drive and replied the SLC because it was the most comfortable.

Here's one memory: in 1992 Mänttä 200-Ajo (typical test event for 1000 Lakes) Hannu's Mazda broke at the place my family was spectating, I was 8 years old. I was too afraid to go ask for autograph so I sent my mom to do it. I remember Mikael Sundström was also spectating there, I recognized him and eventually dared to ask for his autograph. Now none of these two Mazda drivers are with us anymore.
Rest in peace Hannu.
