Brazillian GP 2007 [Sao Paolo] - Kimi Reigns

This race is interesting because it was the last race of a closely fought 2007 season. It is an important race because the title was won from a position with a 7 points deficit to the championship leader.

F1 arrived at this circuit with a three way fight for the title. All of this was happening with Ferrari-gate in the backdrop. Mclaren had been stripped of all its constructors points and Ferrari had effectively won the constructor's title coming into this race. Alonso was on his way out of Mclaren, heading to Renault. The Mclaren team was in some disturbance internally as they tried to recover from the scandal.

The grid was made up of Massa on pole, Hamilton in 2nd, Raikonen 3rd and Alonso 4th. Championship leader Lewis Hamilton had 107 points and was 4 points ahead of second placed driver, Fernando Alonso with 103 points, and 7 points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen with 100 points.

Hamilton needed to finish no lower than 5th to be guaranteed the 2007 driver's title of world champion. Alonso needed to win this race with Hamilton in 6th or lower. Kimi needed to win the race with Hamilton 6th or lower and Alonso in 3rd or lower.

Hamilton had a bad start and Kimi leapfrogged Hamilton into second place before the 1st corner. Alonso overtook Hamilton at turn three, Hamilton fought back, locked up the tires and ran off track to rejoin in 8th place and out of championship position. Mclaren had been checking Hamiton's gearbox in park ferme, the night before, hence there were worries of gearbox problems on the Hamilton car.

The Ferrari cars were simply untouchable at this race. As they soon put 3rd placed Alonso some 40 seconds behind as the race progressed.

Hamilton's engine suddenly cuts out on lap 11, losing half a minute as he tried to restart it. And drops right down to 18th position. Hamilton's day got from bad to worst. He sliced his way through the field to 9th place but was a lap down to the rapid Ferraris at lap 32. Kubica overtook Alonso to take the last podium position at this stage of the race. Putting Alonso outside championship position.

With seven laps to go, Alonso retook 3rd place as Kubica pitted, Hamilton cut his way to 7th and level on points with Alonso at 109 points. Kimi won the race with 110 points and the world championship title, winning the race ahead of Massa, Alonso and Rosberg in fourth.

The engine cut out essentially cost Hamilton his first world championship title. Most would say his DNF at China placed him in a vulnerable situation coming into Brazil. That said, Raikonen drove a majestic race to win the race fair and square ahead of his rapid teammate; Massa.
