SPA 1998 - The wet crunch

Do you remember the 1998 wet race of Spa Francochamp? A race that was pivotal to the drivers championship title that season, which went all wrong for the main championship contenders; Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher.

The race ended abruptly for Coultard at the pile up that ensued immediately after lights out, as Coultard lost control of his Mclaren as the grid coursed their way through the first corner. In what swiftly became a messy spray shrouded confusion of cars crashing into each other and blocking most of the track, the midfield and tail end cars drove into the spray shrouded pile of cars ahead. Hakkinen spun at the restart and the Sauber of Jonny Herbert crashed into his Mclaren, which took him out of the race.

Michael Schumacher while leading the race, catches David Coultard to lap him but somehow crashes into the back of the Mclaren .

A very angry Schumacher heads to the Mclaren garage to give Coultard some angry words.

This was a race where the smaller teams excelled and took the prize of the day. The race ended with a Jordan one-two with Damon Hill winning one of Jordan's four F1 victories.

Eddie Jordan enjoys the winners champaign with Damon Hill, Ralf Schumacher and Jean Alesi in the Beneton.

What a weird race that was?

That race certainly reminds one of the 2019 German Grand Prix that saw Kyvat put the Torro Rosso on the podium in a weird twist and turn wet race that had Mercedes as favorites to win that race. A race won by Max Verstapenn after surviving some very tricky moments. Sebastien Vettel drove one of his finest race to come from the back to put his Ferrari on the 2nd step of the podium. For a brief moment, it seemed the Racing Point of Stroll was going to knick a podium finish, but that was eventually prevented by the Ferrari of Vettel and Torro Rosso of Kyvat powering past him to take the remaining podium positions behind Verstapenn.

Bottas crashed out of second position. Hamilton spun, had a damaging swipe with the barriers. Plus a 5 second penalty put him well out of contention. Hulkenburg also crashed out of what would have been his first poduim finish for Renault. Leclerc crashed out as did Perez. Sainz survived a spin and being ran of the track in his Mclaren to keep it in the top ten.
