Mikkelsen getting beat by 3 R5 cars is embarrassing I'm afraid.

As was Eriksson. But it's strange indeed how both Loix and Gardemeister (who were considered as really fast drivers before joining Mitsubishi) tarnished their reputation with that Evo VI.
Mäkinen and Subaru wasn't that bad in my opinion. Think it was more Tommi being past his prime than anything else.
But ok, back to Catalunya...ku ois neljä pyörää ku vetäis ni ois vähän eri sekunnit kyllä pätkillä, sen mä takaan

I agree about the not bad at all -part. But I am not at all sure that Tommi was past his prime but suddenly there were more competition in terms of good drivers and cars. In 1996 just three different drivers split all the wins between them, in 1999 there already were six different winners and in 2001 whopping eight. Same is evident in manufacturers, which is even more important as not every team is able to field a winning car (and winning driver with it).
